There really isn't anything that one should do, apart from sitting on something and getting on with whatever one was doing beforehand. If something is making a lot of annoying noise, turn your volume down. If something is creating a lot of irritating particles, turn particles off. AR the offenders certainly, it takes but a moment, but really, I have better things to do with my time than flatter the egos of silly little boys with their cut and paste scripts who are desperately jumping up and down for my attention.

I just shoot back, really, at this point in the life of the grid it has become painfully obvious that unless your a multimillion dollar corporation, or an annoying (and By annoying I mean vocal, belligerant, demanding, rich and the owner of so many sims that LL can't ignore you when you screech, you know who you are.) land baron, LL generally does not give a flying rats patoot what you do in SL as long as you don't bug them (read IM) about it personally. AR's are not personal. AR's are easy to ignore and come in such great quantities these days as to be nearly un-enforceable by what all accounts I have been privy is a single underpaid Linden sitting in a basement doing what amounts to data entry 8 hours a day. The only time Ar's get more then a cursory glance as they scroll by is if there are multiples of ar's against the same offender in a short period of time. IE 3 or more (And thats a whole nother can-O-wurms I wont get into) So, ya. Shields, interceptors tossers, and spam scripts work great against an attack. And the odds really are in your favor. Ar em, then shoot back, let em AR you, odds are, neither your AR, nor the griefers will get noticed. And unlike the griefer, you generally have better guns.

Excellent advice, Ordinal's post should be sticky'ed and put at the top of the forums. Concise and to the point.

As for Amy's advice...even if you are not ARed yourself, either by the griefers or by bystanders who mistake YOU for the griefers, you really have to ask yourself what you are doing to make the situation better. The griefers are there to cause disruption and disorder. By shooting back, you are ADDING to the disruption. You might hit bystanders, you're almost certainly adding to lag...hell, depending on what weapons you use, you could even crash the region.

And then what if some other wannabe vigilante walks in and sees you shooting at the griefer and assumes that you're the griefer and starts shooting at you.

You just wind up turning the sandbox into a combat sim. Don't get me wrong, I'm an admin at a combat sim, I script weapons, I love combat in SL. But combat in SL belongs in combat sims, not in sandboxes, shopping malls, etc.


What Ordinal is saying is that griefers do what they do because mommy wouldn't pay enough attention to them and daddy was never home. They want attention, they want you to react to them. If you ignore them, they'll go bother someone else, or maybe they'll even get off the computer and go do something else, like setting fire to dumpsters or spraying graffiti on an underpass. Maybe they'll even do something productive with their lives and join a street gang, lord knows it's probably their only path out of their parent's basement.

This is a bit late but.. I have been around long enough to know that sitting on something, turning down my sound, and doing all those things that you fucking Bhuddist monks are want to do. simply makes me a miserable prisoner of said idiots. The PN are basically dead. My guess is that their balls finally dropped and they realized there were better things to do in life than harass people in a video game. Rumor has it that their leader actually started needing to shave and may have finally lost his virginity.

Regardless, what griefers want is attention. They want people to fight back, to give them a reason to keep attacking.

What if a group of people tried to grief a sim, and nobody noticed?


Oh, and calling me a peacenik is rather funny. You're probably unaware that I script weapons. I love combat in SL, I just think that doing it in a non-combat sandbox is stupid, even if it's used against a griefer, and it only serves to give weapons in SL a bad name and forces the rest of us to nerf our weapons even further so that idiots like you don't misuse them.
