Am I alone in thinking this was the worst weekend for SL in a long time ? Saturday morning began with the entire grid being shut down for several hours - apparently to improve our Second Life experience. When SL finally did come back on line we found ourselves 'stuttering' about suffering the effects of some truly awful lag. Much as I love Ruth she was popping up just about everywhere. Waiting for clothes, vehicles and buildings to rez tested our patience to the limit. If you were going to a party on the SL mainland on Saturday night..you probably went naked..on foot..and the party was in an empty field..or a building that looked decidedly grey..! Me...I consider myself pretty loyal to Second Life..I must be I've checked out the opposition and I'm still here. I do however pay Linden Labs a shit load of cash every month and this weekend certainly wasn't in my opinion particularly good value for money. You...might like to add your comments on how this weekend went for you. Perre..

Yep, me too. But from the blog updates, it sounds like they know what the recent problems were about and it's going to take a couple weeks to put their plans in place. So.. Until they do that, I expect we'll at least be seeing more rolling restarts or planned outages while they stuff the fixes in. Hopefully there won't be (m)any unplanned outages in there, too.

I was in world about twenty minutes today and the ground and a few surrounding buildings stayed gray the whole time. The good news is, I think I got the frame rate up to about 60. 60 frames per *minute* that is. The truth is I can't really run the viewer any more until I get a new system, except very briefly before my cache fills up. So, yes I'll agree this was a bad weekend, but I had other things I needed to do anyway. I'll just keep shopping for a new system and reserve judgement for now. I looked at the competitors too. There are none worth mentioning.

To be honest no, it has never been worse. I am not wanting to slam them, because they have given me a glorious world to play in, but these kinds of stability issues should simply not be an issue for a company that works based around IT and deals with real money.
It is very true that they deal with a colorful variety of perks and features, it is a beautiful virtual life in the best of it, but it is simply irresponsible for any corporation dealing with, again, real money, to have such a fragile structure.
There is a way to implement a responsible change management process and build an infrastructure upon a network framework without throwing a continuous blame finger upon operations or development or network engineering, and it is an IT management onus to capably direct it.
I will not pretend to know what the linden foundational issue is, it is not my business in the end, but you cannot smile this stuff off nor complain with a terrible bitterness when a year has simply not made them any better at prompt, efficient problem resolution as with other companies that develop online ventures.
The simple truth is, they are not really expanding upon the wonderful virtual world they have provied us, but instead they are floundering about oddly in an undirected way of reactionary resolution that only fixes things "for now".
Don't get me wrong, I am a big SL fan, but they seriously need to get a grip.

No, it pales in significance compared to November-December 06

The major outage on Saturday was ISP related, so the "apparently to improve the SL experience" line is somewhat misleading. Not trying to be a fanboy or apologist for LL, but I won't blame them for that one. When SL came back online on Saturday, it worked a treat for me. I was at a particularly busy party that managed to be and look great.

It was pretty yucky. In fact I went to bed three hours early. My husband said "who is this strange woman in my bed!"
I managed to be topless, then dressed in red underwear, then bought stuff which went into my inventory but then disappeared, all while wearing one shoe.
My shape also changed back to one I had 3 weeks ago. I have no idea why or how as when i changed it 3 weeks ago i did a save rather than a save as. Perhaps the lindens wanted me to smile again. I changed my avatar's mouth into something less upturned.

Well if you go back to the Days of Maintenance Wednesdays you could say yes. 3 hour shutdowns easily became 5-8 hour ones. People would be apopleptic here in the forum. very entertaining actuall, that was back when we were allowed to have a sense of humor. Some great threads were spawned on those days.

Considering he didn't recognize her, he probably thought she was just some Olympic athlete lost on her way to Beijing. I didn't notice any particularly awful lossy behavior over the weekend. Slow asset retrieval at times and grid holes, but fewer crashes and a much improved physics experience. Nothing consistently bad. EDIT: Someone who shall not be named spiked physics in a sim, but couldn't drop time dilation below 0.13 no matter what they tried. Kudos.

Yes of course it could get worse. You should have been around last year.
Still, there is always that other game. What's it called again? REAL Life, that's the one!

Oh - it's definitely been much worse - early 2007 and later 2006. Every wednesday the grid would be down for maint and a viewer upgrade, then service would be sporadic thursday and friday while they fixed the new problems the upgrade caused. I know SL has had it's problems lately, but, up-time has definitely been way better in the last 12 months.......
And yeah, Saturday sucked......

i think it was 6/6/06 that LL rolled out the Viewer Update From Hell! also known as Black Wednesday. so yeah it could have been way worse.

The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

Take it from somone who's been playing on line games since 1998, this is nothing.
Hands up anyone playing in 2002 when UUnet managed to almost take down the entire US west coast ? ... for days ....weeks .....not hours like we saw.

Aw, it wasn't so bad. Friday night was frustrating, but after my third or fourth crash I was able to manage staying in world, even after they disabled logins. I feel pretty fortunate about that, though it was a bit boring after the few I was hanging out with took off for the night. I still managed to enjoy myself hanging around in world with barely any people in there...... There is always bound to be bumps in the road, but it smooths out eventually.
