From: Imnotgoing Sideways What level are you on? I don't like games, they're boring. (^_^)
@OP:
I don't like "realism" at all. What I do like is believability. I like to believe the scene I see. So, if that means rippling, glossy water and a well implemented shadow system, so be it. I like to see how far people go to make me say, "Oooooh, preeeeety!" (^_^)
At the same time, I don't wear a ruddy or heavily detailed skin and my store is a giant cookie jar that was constructed with nearly no textures. Both are totally unrealistic, but, are completely believable to the eye. And, for that, I'm satisfied. (^_^)y Immy, I agree with you a lot. Should I be scared? *wink* SL is an ultimate form of self expression, and people with beautiful and interesting avatars are often the most likely to be worth spending time with. No offense to anyone, but people who are sticklers for making 'myself in SL' are generally not ones with whom I form close bonds. I dislike stereotyping people, or categorizing them, but that has been my experience in SL so far. Likely this is due to me, and not them. SL can mean so many different things, I have found everyone wants something a little different. I certainly have my reasons for the way I represent myself here, but I'd rather not discuss them on a forum. I definitely don't view SL as a game, it is so much more than that to me. Realism doesn’t really come into it for me. Furry, Neko, Robot, < insert your chosen form here> - I like them all and do my best to treat people as they want to be treated, and simply ask the same in return. The fact that I can have a party at my house with vampires, wolves, girl next doors, stunning fashion models, robots, and any number of fantastic creatures just makes SL all the more

From: Treasure Ballinger Hi Jackie; It is an interesting thing to discuss; I have found that, my experience has evolved and continues to evolve, over time. When I first came to SL over 2 years ago, it never even occurred to me to be anything other than a cute human female. So I learned how to 'get cuter', learned about skins, shapes, hair, stuff to complement a 'cute human female'. I obtained land eventually, and put very traditional houses on them, with very traditional furniture in the houses. It was all very realistic.
I started changing houses a lot, but still very traditional. One day, just exploring, I realized the only thing that was exciting me, by this time, were 'fantastical' things. Fairy sims, elven homes, big, fantastical SL floral and fauna; so I wiped out all the traditional, and filled my land with fantasy. Something I never would have considered in the beginning.
I also believe that SL has raised my tolerance level, to a huge extent, actually, and now I look at 'mostly' everything and everybody' with an acceptance that they are travelling 'their' SL journey as they wish and do not require my input. That's a good thing.
I haven't taken Treasure to another level yet, another species, real or fantasy, but it will probably come in time. Part of that is because of RL/SL mix of work I do with Virtual Ability, the fact that I am on the RL board of directors, and that we are a RL non profit. Been thinking of an alt, and if I do go there, I doubt it will be 'just another pretty girl' but something fun and fantastic. It's a continuing evolution that I'm still having much fun with, and I still value and love SL. Ooooh my 1000th post was about realism/vs 'not' in SL. Nice!

From: Lindal Kidd On the other hand, my house doesn't have a bathroom or a kitchen. That's a good point and it makes me wonder - how realistic CAN Second Life be, when an avatar's version of 'eating' is smashing a food item into their forehead? Not to mention, they never poo.* Second Life is as "realistic" as midcentury film and tv. *unless they've visited an xcite mall Btw there's no lock on any one interp and nothing saying it has to fall into 'game' or 'life' or 'social space' categories and not slop over the borders of all three.

I have at times been a furry, a tiny, and a variety of odd ball avatars. However, I do prefer the look of a human avatar. I also love to fly and do so all the time just about everywhere I am. So, I guess it is a mix for me. From: wrable Amat SL is a online game,not a new life. To me it is not a game - it is another aspect of my life.

I have a human avie that looks pretty much like me... when I was 25. However, even that avie "me" can fly, make funky things out of prims, fly a helicopter, dance like Ginger Rogers, and jump into my sweetheart's arms without causing permanent spinal injury. Also have various dragons, elves, anime characters, assorted tiny animals and non-realistic skins. My world, my imagination.

define realistic? real to the senses, or real to reflect meatspace... totally different outcomes.

I would go for believable within the context of my role-plays over realism, if we define realism to be like RL. I can incorporate a lot of differing types of unrealism into my fantasy environment as well as elements of realism so it is rare for my fantasy environment to break. However I do tend to steer clear of groups and individuals that see SL as an RL extension and cannot see the other point of view. It is just better this way I find.

i don't really rp anymore so it's more of a tool and meeting place and a place to listen to an unlimited amount of music stations from around the world..each year i lose a little more interest in the fantasy of it all..it's still an escape but RL gets good in the summer and the need to escape gets less..

The bulk of my SL I like to be believable and immersive, because it allows me to engage not only true to RL stuff, but also fiction and fantasy like it was a reality in SL. There's not really a sense of "hey, that's not possible" in most things, but those that do stretch the realm of possibility too far just come across as looking stupid to me.
The only things I can think of that I like, and sometimes *need* to see a good dose of realism in are human AV's, and sex. Something about drawing on RL experiences to make them more real to me. That's also "realism" defined as "yes, that could be a real living person", NOT "this is what I look like in RL". I stay well clear of the RL MyFaceDateTwitBook crowd... they break my SL.

Lol.. an expression meaning those who treat SL like a dating service, or who seek a RL to RL connection. At it's worst, it would be the ones who would send you a nasty pic of their genitals.. and be proud of it

It is really just a term given to the social networkers, they flit from one social network technology to another, the technology du jour you might say. They mostly don't do roleplay or immersive fantasy nor understand it - often ridicule it in fact. Another term for them is Extensionists rather than us Immersionists.
