Heya everyone!

Bare with the post, it will makes sense when read all the way through!

Kay,
Today my TV died, not the best of tvm but it got me around the hundreds available. First reaction was to replace it, then after thinking it over I had a small nugget of gold moment. What if I did not replace it? Waste a lot of time watching TV anyways, a ton of other things I could do instead.

So my question to all those residents out there is:
Would you replace your computer so you could use Second Life?
OR
Would you replace your computer so you could Check your emails / browse the net?

I have decided not to replace my TV, although I have a TV tuner for my computer setup with DVR capabilities. Watching TV on the computer makes me want to burn my eyes out after an hour, so it should still keep me doing other things.

Well I serious ponder not watching television any more because it requires cable to get any channels and only use it to watch movies because with crappy internet service I am paying close to 130 a month now and money is tight and I like to have money maybe for better or a another computer someday, maybe drawing tablet.
But I am really torn.
There somethings my television provides that the internet and SL don't.

If you get a nice HD monitor, your TV can look better on the desktop than it does on the TV. :p

I actually run dual monitors, both could can handle 1080p HD

As far as programing goes, there are services like Fancast and Hulu that bring TV content to the web Legally.

I have, in the last two and a half years, upgraded one computer and purchased another computer. In both cases, the use of SL was a part of the reasoning. With the most recent computer purchase, I actually went ahead and ran Second Life in the Apple Store, jes to make sure it'd run okay.

I was a beta tester for Hulu. I love that place. :)

I would replace my computer in a heartbeat to run SL better. Lately, I barely watch TV at all and if it is on, it's ear candy. Since I don't particularly like candy, I wind up turning it off at some point, finding it just to be a distraction to what I'm doing inworld.

I run my TV right next to my monitor. Both are on at the same time.

The computer with "whatever" I'm doing

The TV usually with Cartoon Network, History Channel, Travel channel or Science channel.

Did I mention I have my laptop running on a table beside me too? :o

I have to admit a new TV would take precedence, I enjoy my Sports, old movies and the few TV shows I like too much. If my computer were to go kaput, being shut out of SL would have no bearing on when I replaced it. I can live without a computer in the house, when my old one died 4 years ago, I waited for 6 months before buying a new one. I plan on keeping this one for another year before considering a new one.

Now, my 46" Sony LCD TV is another story.....

I haven't watched television since the 80s, except when in someone else's house. I'd buy a new computer for any reason, if that's what I wanted.

LOL we just purchased a 50 inch plasma flat screen high def television. I could care less. That's my husband's toy and my laptop is mine. The tv is always on but mostly it's a distraction.

You know what's really cool though? Have you ever seen SL on a 50 inch plasma flat screen high def television? Woohootie HoooOOOOO!

Easy one for me to answer. I only watch one show and that is LOST. If it went off the air, and it will, I'll be fine. I have no interest in TV. If I want to watch something on rare occasion, I'll do it on line.

Without my computer, I'd forget to take any medication I might or might not be on. Seriously, first thing in the morning, I get a drink and sit down at my computer and take any meds at that time.

So... my TV is good for the kid, but I probably wouldn't miss it.

Yes its WOOOO ooOOO OO T! 50" plasma and and on a 37" LCD 1080i HD fantastic! (this may become my main monitor soon! as this old 19" lcd is getting to small, maybe as a dual set up and the 19" can run web and such. what I would like to do is run a long enough hdmi tothe LR 50" from the computer and invest in a good wireless key/mouse --- the mice I have now go bad at 3' :(

but I have to say if one TV goes out I wait a bit and drag out the old tubes! I have Toshibia 32" non flat screens that are 15 years old that show fantastic pictures still, not compared to HD on the 50" or the 37" lcd but it works!

the computer! well this one will get fixed/upgraded if anything goes out, the other old boxes will get slowly replaced single core and all no PCI=e etc. but they are 5-7 years old now, and still work, upgraded as best they are gona get, mainly they are HD storage towers on the netqwork, and kids toys now.

oh I think I picked pigs fly... or that flying one

I already did replace my computer to run SL better, and it happened to replace my TV too, since the screen is nearly as big and it looks as good.

I gave up on broadcast TV many years ago anyway and for a while only watched video tapes, then only DVD's. Now I can just about watch what I want whenever I want on the computer.

Pretty soon we won't even have to watch the shows, we'll just interface directly with the Overmind and absorb the memory of having watched them.

Yeah, ever since they cancelled Misfits of Science and Manimal, it's been pretty much downhill.

This thread is rather timely for me as my main TV just died, it's only 4 years old a medium/large screen, and I watched it once a week, so I dragged out one of the spare protables and plonked it on the cabinent but it's dam small and far away to read the hard drive recorders text. I only watch shows I set it to record during the week.
unfortunately I fear I must replace it as I like the feel of watching TV relaxed in the lounge for a change and break from the computer. I was just about to start seriously buying parts this week to build my next PC machine, a dual 9600 beast as they are so cheap now, instead I need to shop for a medium sized TV now :/

I'd keep the telly...not that there's anything wrong with SL but seven days/nights logged into SL..I don't want to mention the word addiction but... (you can probably see where I'm going with this)

I'm a huge fan of SL but I also recognise there's a Real World out there and we're all part of it..when we find ourselves spending more time inworld than out..you've just gotta suppose there might be a problem. You have to address that problem..you have to take a break from SL.

Second Life is a wonderful place..but remember you do have a First Life

What I meant by that last post was you need to keep in touch with reality (sorry folks but SL isn’t reality)..and the telly is actually quite a good way of staying connected…
