I've been in SL since mid-Dec last year. Not very long but I'm already bored with it. What do you guys do inworld that keeps you interested and makes you want to keep coming back? I log in, don't know where to go or what to do and just wander around aimlessly.

Hello Quaintly.
For me SL is a great place to socialise and meet people from all over the world. I can also indulge my imagination and create a look that isn't possible in RL. I'm a regular visitor to Grendel's Children. I'm also a dragon lover so I enjoy the Wyrms dragon community and I go to the European drumming circles and have fun there. It all depends on what your interests are. My husband doesn't "get" SL at all...some don't. Its great escapist fun for those of us who do, though. ![]() |

Get land, learn and start building your own home and while you're taking breaks, visit clubs and make friends who you can explore SL with.
I havent been bored 1 second since the day I found SL |

Bored? oh my gosh no...I have too much to do. I landscape my land, ride my horses, spend time with friends, learning to build and watching tutorials and touring places, train my sweet puppy dog. Sail my boats, go windsurfing, shopping of course....and lots more there is always something to do.

Sail my boats, go windsurfing, shopping of course....and lots more there is always something to do. I second Fand's post. I have so much I love doing in SL and too little time to do it all (and I'm online a LOT!!) I began in a role play community, but then branched out from there and was introduced to a vintage dance club where I made a lot of friends (and met my Partner *smiles*). He and I enjoy exploring SL and after a year we think we've barely touched the surface. One GREAT way to find new places to explore is through Natalia's blog: http://www.mermaiddiaries.com/2006/11/day-40-green-plaid-and-dino-boots.html Natalia has journaled her time in SL and shares with the community what she has found. The blog is very well organized into areas of interest. I'm also a class junkie - I take an average of 2 classes a day and through that have learned to build, which led to trying my hand at selling a few of my items, and also led to me becoming an instructor in SL. I have a VKC dog that I take to weekly training classes....my Partner and I enjoy exploring SL while riding our horses....we enjoy our IoW dragon avatars....let's see...(takes a breath)... OH!! Quests!! If you like that sort of thing there are three wonderful quests that I know of: *Pot Healer's Quest *Mata Hari Quest *Broken Harp Quest I'm also a SL Relay for Life Volunteer on the Passionate Redheads team...and get about 5 notices/day of some activity involved with that. I could go on...but I think you get the idea ![]() _____________________

Yeah, there's almost too much to do in SL that I worry more about not having enough time to do it all. If you aren't a creative type or a social person, I suppose SL could become boring. However, there is the exploration aspect to it. If you take the time to explore, there are many treasures to be found in SL.
Are you interested in music? The arts? There are many dedicated DJs and musicians who routinely play live to enthusiastic audiences in SL. There is an art gallery on every virtual corner of SL. If you're into any type of art, you will find it here in SL and find endless exhibits for your perusal. There are also geisha shows, operas, jazz sets, and the occasional comedian. Do you socialize? Make friends. Hang out with them. Go on adventures. Need a place to make friends? Any welcome area will do as there is always a good cross selection of people. Why not start a business? A project? For example, I'm learning how to build, script, and texture by creating my own home. Again, while shopping is fun, nothing compares to making your own clothes and items. I also started a blog detailing my own adventures in SL thus giving me more of an impetus to explore. In the end, you can't just be a consumer in SL because that gets boring. You have to find something that interests you. Something that you would like to devote time to. If not, there's no point in being here. Hope you find your way. PS: As far as art/music/live events go, join some groups!! Find the right groups and you will be invited to more events than you can possibly go to! |

... but now even shopping is boring. *shock, horror* (yes, you can tell that I'm a girl )![]() I was not normally a frantic shopper. My fiancee however, is. RL and SL. Well, her female avatar preserves this same love of shopping, hence her inventory is three times the size of my four avatars together! Heck .. bored? You can ski, scuba dive, sailing's been mentioned. Did you know that the more involved sailing craft actually use wind dynamics to emulate real sailing and there's a serious sailing group? One of the scuba diving sims in PADI. Treasure Hunts are popular. I've met some wonderful people on these. I can't get enough time for SL. So many themed and artistically created sims to explore .. and make great friends on the way. Bored? how I dream of having time to be bored ![]() _____________________

SL is mostly about being social and "playing" and experimenting with the world and the content on offer.
Some people do indeed find that boring. If you do, maybe SL isn't for you. There is no great loss or offense in admitting this. ![]() One thing I would mention though to the above posts, _don't_ buy land to experiment with, since what you'll do on your land on in your house is likely to just be more socializing and "playing". Having land can enhance the experience but if it just fundamentially isn't your thing then you'll run the risk of spending a fair amount of money finding that out. |

There have been times I've been bored...usually when I wanted a friend to talk to, and nobody seemed to be around.
But really, anyone who's bored in SL has only themselves to blame. There is always something new to see or do. I've got a "To Do" list that seems to grow endlessly. - See the Mexico sims - See the Bay City sims - Explore Caledon more - Find some killer new hair - ditto on earrings. - Organize my inventory - Write a couple of new classes - spend more time mentoring newbies - check my tentants' prim counts - Finalize a couple of builds and put them up for sale on SLX - Explore Privateer Space again...preferably with Marianne, who knows it well. - spend more time at the Hangout chillin'. - get some Slut Pics in to Trout for rating - practice SL photography more - try designing some clothes - learn to use Particles ...and so on. If you want to borrow some of the above, be my guest. Maybe if someone else does them, I won't have to. _____________________

What do I do? Well... I'm usually busy...
> Chatting > Building > Scripting > Playing with the physics engine > Adventuring > Virtual Photography > Helping and giving guidance > Inworld games > Inworld contests > Stalking Lindens > Finding ways to make L$ > Finding ways to spend L$ > Meeting new people > Freaking those people out > ... Usually by tossing bloody razorblades around > AFK abuse > Avatar ghost abuse > Going to DJ events to dance > Going to live events to dance > Just dancing any old random place > Continuing the search for the next best spiky boot > Dressing up > Dressing down > ...... (^_^) *inhales* (OxO) So... Yeah, there really is plenty to do... You just hafta' wan'na do it. (^_^)y _____________________

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. I do socialise, but I guess due to time zone issues (I'm GMT +
, when I'm inworld, a lot of my friends are not. Wandering around looking at sims and builds alone is not fun for me. It's only fun if you do it with a friend or friends, but haven't met anyone to do such things with yet. I'm a member of a group of ladies and the group's primary focus is shopping, so we used to tell each other about sales and great deals, and shop together, which was fun. But now that I'm finding shopping boring, I don't know where to find people to do other things with. I made a start at trying to build but I'm not good at the Photoshop stuff, which makes it difficult to texture. I think so far I haven't seen much in SL that I can't do when I'm out of SL (apart from building and scripting). If it's looking at art, listening to music, or socialising with people, I can do that outside SL too. It's only if I'm doing something *with* someone inworld -- that makes a difference. So maybe I need friends... (gosh I'm starting to sound pathetic!! *wince*) |

Lets see what is there to do.....
I love to: take classes dance visit and chat try to build things hehe explore shop just to name a few. If your shy like I am you might want to go to some of the Newbie questions and answers sessions EVEN if you know the answers you never know, you might strike up a conversation, that is how I met a few of my friends. Also they have Newbie dances. Them are usually fun. And I am going to start my own to do list for where to go exploring cause that is a great idea. And you know how forgetful I can be lol. And I have to tell you even though I dont like to do inventory. Mine is starting to shape up pretty good hehe. |

I made a start at trying to build but I'm not good at the Photoshop stuff, which makes it difficult to texture. If you are interested in this, try searching for programs like: Texture Maker Genetica Filter Forge Ultra Fractal Apophysis All of those offer alternative ways of producing graphics that can be really useful for textures, and without requiring you to pick up a pen. ![]() |

So maybe I need friends... (gosh I'm starting to sound pathetic!! *wince*) Do a search for "conversation" under PLACES and see what you come up with. I recommend a place that seems oddly blue in hue (especially on Monday evenings) and one that contains the word "cartel" Sorry, can't be more specific or someone'll get their knickers in a knot because I'm advertising clubs or something. ![]() . _____________________

I do socialise, but I guess due to time zone issues (I'm GMT + , when I'm inworld, a lot of my friends are not.Everyone gave great ideas...have you bought a house and furnished it? That is a blast and is taking me a fair amount of time. Try logging on during the times that are best for you and frequent the same places. You will find cool people in or around your time zone. It is my (little) experience that the friends I make outside of my time zone, don't stay friends for very long. We just never see each other. The people I hang out with the most are in my time zone +/- a couple hours. I have one friend in Madrid...but he doesn't sleep much and I am able to log on in the am occasionally. ![]() Check out Frank's and Sweetheart's...there are always tons of people there and couples dancing is a great way to meet people. There are also singles and dating services IW if that interests you. I have never used them but have seen them here and there. Also check sims that center around your country. Are you in Hong Kong? If so, there are lots of Asian sims... HTH! _____________________

Sure, I do most all the things listed so far. But.
I’ll be honest there have been times that I’ve been bored or had to force myself to get on. It doesn’t happen a lot but it does happen, and I’ve been on almost everyday for well over a year now. I’m usually the type that likes to have one close special friend that I can share my time with exploring and dancing or whatever. When that person isn’t around or I’m in the midst of finding a new “one special friend”, I like to go and hang out at Help Island or one of the Welcome areas hitting on noo….errrm… helping people. Seriously though, SL isn’t for everyone. Trust me there are plenty of people who find sooo much to do here that they are neglecting important things in their RL. Find that balance. I can not say I have but I hear that when one does it’s a great thing. Maybe, Quaintly you are forcing yourself to be in world when you shouldn’t. Maybe when you feel bored with SL just log off and come back later. We’ll be here. ![]() |
