From: 2k Suisei The beat up look is quite popular with what some people call "emo kids".
But it's not always a dark thing. Battered stuff tends to look more realistic. This is why grunge is quite popular in SL. Dirty clothing, cars, houses etc. The battered skins are just a logical progression from that. They feel the stuff has character and looks realistic. Or as they might say "It's cool!". That's all.. One of these days I probably need to learn who this Emo person is and why they are beating up kids. And why kids think that is cool. --- By the way, if I see this Emo person, I will probably not be able to stop myself from attacking them on my lunch break. Beating up kids . . . ack

From: Alyx Sands When I wear a beaten up skin, it doesn't mean I was the *victim*-but then again, I don't think I'd come across as very victimised. It's more of an urban cyberpunk-y getting in a gangfight thing for me...am I making sense? I used to show around my scraped knees and bruises from falling off trees and stuff as a kid, too. Trophies of survival! Ha. When someone comments on how awful you look you can say "You should see the other guy".

From: HoneyBear Lilliehook I just can't fathom wanting to walk around bruised and beaten. But then, I don't get the need to come to SL and have 2 or 3 kids either /me gets married and has a gaggle of disgusting (and probably unbearably smartarsed) brats and ... ARGH!!! NO!!!! phew ... it was just a nightmare ... a nightmare ... Well me neither, on any of the above points, other than perhaps about the derriere ... winks.

From: Aki Shichiroji All I can say is if any drastic change shows up in a friend, it's probably something you ought to investigate with them, as a friend.
I would probably similarly question any other drastic change in a friend's online lifestyle - the rapid adoption of Gor to someone's lifestyle, for instance, or even a drastic stylistic change (like someone who goes from looking fairly normal to fairly gussied up, for instance). Far more people in SL are subject to this than those who go for beaten up skins, imo.
It is definitely a thin line along which many tread when they go for this stuff, and yes in many cases it is the expression of what one wishes to be or finds attractive in some way. The key is discerning whether such a thing is enhancing or being a detriment to the individual's experience in second life, and imo that is very much driven by context. The gussied up thing can, of course, simply mean that they have a few spare sheckles they've used to go shopping. I change my appearance ALL the time. This is because unlike RL which needs hard work, dedication, time and money to change how you look, in SL it's so easy. No sitting in the hairdresser for 45 minutes with tinfoil on my head in SL!

Oh for sure. I'm sure all of us have experienced wanting to look better to some extent. In most cases, people in SL are at best idealized versions of themselves. But i think beyond the 'what-if' scenarios of looking better, if there is a drastic change, in some small or large way, it can represent a need to either be different or ignore something that is causing problems in RL. How one chooses to deal with such problems (or not deal with them, as the case may be) is really up to them, but again, the context matters. If the changes we make to ourselves are of a detriment to our experiences in SL and RL, that's where things need to be looked in to, imo. In essence, I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to look a certain way unless it obscures true personality or problems associated with the true self. A healthy understanding of this distinction between fantasy and reality is necessary though, i think.

All true, Aki, but for me, part of the fun of SL is adopting new looks. My raven avatar is one of my favorites, and I just bought a honeybee avi that I love as well. I put them on as a nice change, not because I'm in a state of turmoil. I totally get what you're saying about massive SL Lifestyle changes (i.e. from Average Jane to Ultra-Gor) but it's worth mentioning that maybe Average Jane finally got up the gumption to try out Ultra-Gor, which was her secret fantasy anyway... just sayin...

Hehe.. not disputing that Again, all context driven. I've been known to have lain dead on the floor of a club for hours at a time as a gag. Does not mean i am particularly suicidal. On other hand, Average Jane may come from an abusive past and might not be addressing that very well by subjecting herself to situations that echo said past, right? So in a way it all depends on the individual, their background, and just how incorporating these new experiences in to their lives will affect us. Sometimes it's harmless! Sometimes we don't even realise taking on a certain major change is a reflection of other bigger issues. I've lost relatives to suicide this way, and have known people who have gone off on increasingly dark paths because no one bothered to care that something might be wrong. Not saying all folks who do this are in mortal danger - it's just something I try to keep an eye out for when people I know make drastic changes to themselves and something I would hope friends of mine would take note of (and provide support for) should i do something similar. *scrolls up* Is this making sense?

From: Void Singer it's not always about fantasy, ... if I feel beat up by the flu or something, it's a bit of gallows humor to wear a skin like that (I don't but I can see the possibility) ...
ok - I need a skin with two smashed fingers. I was moving a recliner in RL and the damned thing slipped as I lifted it up. Now the ends of my two middle fingers are all swollen and black. I might lose a nail. It hurts to type any word that has letters on the right side of the keyboard. I can't really communicate that easily in SL, because it takes too much typing, so maybe I can find a skin with f-ed up fingers. Poor Trout.

Poor Trout. AWWWWWW sh*t. Poor Trout. Really. Put some ice around your fingers-have you been to A&E already? They might have some pain killers or something.... From: Void Singer no I don't think anyone would make that mistake Um, have we met and I had forgotten to take off the kick butt attachment that makes me hit everyone that accidentally crashes into me? I apologise, then. Or is it that flick knife? From: Brenda Connolly Ha. When someone comments on how awful you look you can say "You should see the other guy". Exactly!

From: Cherry Czervik If you're just looking for a more localised "bruising" etc then check out Damage (how apt, Dave). This of course being in reference to the derriere ... You know not much scares me in threads but the fact that people would know stuff like this it scares me lol I know someone who wanted to make a skin with bruises and such and I couldn't for the life of myself bring myself to do it even though it was someone I knew and it was just a project for one person and "for fun" maybe that's it .. anyhow yeah so this thread scares me and the fact that people know this stuff scares me more.. lol /runs with crayons fast away fastest and fasterer

i see where you are coming from aki. I have had a few people with major problems and when you think back there usually are telling signs of problems. However I seem to have a mental time every other week. I go mad and change my look completely, go on a shopping spree... anything - different. but then I'm just mental anyway lol. But yes, I do keep an eye out for problem signs. i hope my friends don't start getting paranoid if they have read this lol. 'She's *looking* at me again though...' hehe Poor poor trout sounds nasty. i hope you are better soon.

I've made quite the mark in certain SL communities by being dirty. At first, it was about breaking the norm in a perfect world. Almost everyone is idealized and that's no fun. Eventually it became a lot of fun coming up with stories about what happened and why I was so dirty and beat up.
"What happened to you?" "I was trying to blackmail some ninjas but they weren't having it."
"Why you so dirty?" "I was hunting wild boar at Apollo and the wild boar won."
"How did you get so beat up?" "I was in Los Altos - never take a spear to a gun fight."
