*sigh*

Does anyone know or even have any idea what the hell that statement "Linden Lab’s role is changing" is all about in reference to this blog post? Is this in reference to the party only or is there something new and scary coming down the road?

They say their role is changing and then they mention something about residents wanting them to become more involved in mainland. Perharps the new boss is more Dirty Harry and will land on the mainland ass-hats like a 400 pound gorilla as opposed to this classic 'everything is groovy' attitude.

I think when Everett says that "Linden Lab's role is changing", he means that LL's role is changing in the context of the SL5B Birthday celebration.

Additionally - the focus of the blog post seems to be clarifying some misinformation on who is eligable to present (such as Kid avatars).

From: Everett Linden
All exhibits, in substance and form, are PG on Linden Land. Any Resident can submit an application to exhibit. A team of Lindens and Resident organizers will review the applications, and if accepted, builders can be in any avatar form they choose (provided they are within PG guidelines).

The way I'm reading things, Kid avatars are welcome, providing they stay within PG guidelines. Marianne should be pleased :)

then great on both parts!!!

if it means the New Boss wants the employees to "get their hands dirty" then im liking this guy already!

if it means that the initial "no kids at the yard party" announcement was misunderstood, thats good too!

But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

That's also the way I read it.

This bit caught my eye, though:

The "role change" is that LL will be handling more themselves rather then only relying on resident volunteers as they have in the past. The PG stuff on Linden events is a good idea (and really assumed by anyone that knows how the lab works), but I am puzzled with the mention of Mainland. That was kinda odd.

From: someone

Why the change? Simply put, the increasing complexity of these events requires more staffing and infrastructure than an all-volunteer organizing team. Second, we are responding to calls by Residents to take a more active role in improving the quality of life on the Mainland. Our intent is always to keep SL growing, vibrant, safe, diverse, astonishing….and eventually even stable ;-).

I assumed that was the LDPW and Bay City and finishing the southern continent and all that.. This stuff was, IMO, their acknowledgement that mainland could use some TLC. Maybe it hasn't progressed as quickly as some would like but I think they've done a really good job on it.

I don't know how much I can say, but yes... I had a very fruitful discussion last night, and am pleased. Even though the entry is awful hard to translate into English. ;-)

That could be it.

I think sometimes the Lindens put a obscure comment in just to make the assumption machine spin up so they can get lulz. :p

Long speculated but if that day comes I would not be surprised a bit. I was looking for it to happen when the first corporations started coming around. I won't predict it happening, but there will be no shock from me if it happens.

Will lead to a mass exodus. Will do more to hurt the economy and land prices than the land dumps, the gambling ban and the bank ban combined.

I don't see the mainland ever going all-PG. They'd start up a new PG-only adult grid before they did that.

Actually, that would be the only rational way to establish an all-PG mainland area. By starting fresh, in a seperate grid.

Possibly some one will start new misinformation campaign or it will be some type of hype or some new drama fest.
Anyway I will be taking a nap and going back to doodling in my sandbox by myself and not get involved.

That was EXACTLY one of the "scary" things I feared while reading between the lines in that blog... That would be very unfair. Make as many new PG sims as you like but don't change current Mature rated sims to PG!!!

If I had to make a guess...

They're splitting into 2 companies. 1 managing the existing grid, island rentals, etc in a more professional and hands on manner than before, and another that handles the technology, co-location, asset server, etc issues.

There would be no point for this. They already have this essentially, teams that handle in-world stuff, support, etc, and then the hardware teams who handle servers, development, etc. Making it two companies wouldn't change a thing.

I was wondering if that wouldn't be better position for them to be in.

"LL the platform provider" would finally be able to claim it's a true service provider since they wouldn't deal with anything in-world at all except on a technological level.

"LL the governing body" would be distinct from the other and deal only with things in-world and only on Linden owned or Linden estate (aka mainland) land. For all practical purposes they'd just act as any estate owner does and be on equal footing. Estate owners would become fully responsible and accountable for anything that happens on their sims.

Right now LL is just too involved for anyone to be able to see them as just a service provider who doesn't have to worry about what content they're hosting. And they'd have to deal with pesky residents even less than they do already :p.

It'd allow them to say "That? Nooo... That's the _other_ Lindens" when corporate cash asks about the lastest from the dorks at Fox or some congrassman that needs some votes.
