first reason was at the time my club had a xploder (legal back then) and I was not aware of being able to turn off the notice when money was recieved and paid out, so used the alt to hold the xploder.
then it got kinda bugged so I made another
then they became free so I made 2 more LOL
Mainly they just sit there, not used much
thinking I might use one or 2 as a backup system, make my creations full perm, and drop them on the alt, all packaged up nice and neat
that way if anything happens to this account, my stuff is still intact
I use them to test poses from time to time
going to make them owner of the groups I own, so as to cover that
debated the make one premium for land but, not sure if worth it for only 512 per 9.95 per month
heh

From: Olias Mayo Simple question, ..why would you use an alternative avatar in Second Life? For the same reason you do: to stir up controversy on forums, promote an agenda, and not have it linked to your main.

From: SuezanneC Baskerville It's so good that someone has finally asked that question here. Thought it would never happen. So when you show your grandparents what you do in Second Life, they can't actually see what you do in Second Life. To keep funds separate, since SL doesn't allow one avatar to have more than one linden acount. To serve as a dummy or mannequin for various purposes like building avatars or testing clothing or animations. For taking pictures of your photogenic av. So that you can have one account in which you claim to be a 65 year old male god fearing Republican, one in which you claim to be 18 year old svelte libertine atheist, etc. So you can have a bunch of cool names. So you can run libsecondlife programs while using your normal account. In some cases this will mean you have 70 or more alts. So you can get your money's worth out of your expensive sex-having-system when you can't find someone you want to use it with you. Or can't find enough. So when the thread you worked so hard to make controversial doesn't get enough attention to suit you, you can post a variety of increasingly inflammatory contradictory viewpoints. So you can sway the outcomes of forum polls. So you post enough abuse reports to get a response from the abuse department without having to get anyone else to. For building and scripting, there are things you need to test about permissons that involve transferring objects to another avatar - you can't test it properly when you are the creator and owner, so you have to either have an alt to use or get someone else to help you. In many such cases it will be easier to do it yourself using an alt. To escape from group chat. To join more groups so you can have even more group chat. you're a bit scary. LOL

Minions, got to have minions Hmm handy for quiet time and privacy, reconniscance duties, extra camera when building in 3d using 2nd monitor. Holding backups of inventory and creations, landgrouping, role play, low inventory / low lag combat alt, different names, different circles of friends.

I use alts to escape the dreaded IM mode. I also don't like telling people that I'm busy and I don't like Busy mode because I like being available to those that are within my avatar's vicinity.
I must go now, I'm busy!

I have only recently created an alt. I have decided to start seriously creating things and I need her to build quietly, test perms, hold the items so that they do not get either lost in my inventory or destroyed when my inventory finally reaches it's limits and explodes. She is unverified and has no payment info for the time being so i doubt i shall bring her onto the forums for a while - but if and when i do, I will definitely make it clear who it is, maybe change her sig or something. She is not nearly going to be as sociable as me, because she is my builder and tester, but I may drag her to the hangout occasionally, depends on whether i can be bothered logging out and in again. I may eventually use her for roleplay but I doubt it. I like the idea of using alts for the extra groups.

From: Isablan Neva For the same reason you do: to stir up controversy on forums, promote an agenda, and not have it linked to your main. As it happens, I've never used an alt. If I do have something to say, people will hear it from me, Olias. Not someone else. I'm quite proud of me, I've spent a long time to be me and I will not 'abandon' me to hide behind an alternative avatar. BUT,.... saying that, I can see the use of having an alt for various purposes. As described here. Also, if people get upset at the, "I'm sorry sweetheart, but I'm busy at the moment, may I call you back?" Then that is their problem and not mine. ....Oli.

I hope you understood its value. Thankfully Suezanne also put one at the end of the first line of her first post. It took me another two lines to climb back down from the light fitting! For the record, different persona. First and foremost. Deeding land to group and eliminating monthly tier a bonus. I could have just used different outfits but there is a clearer division with alts, separate friends lists, different lives. Multiple Personality Disorder? no, just imagination.

My brother said: "My alt is my avatar's avatar."
I mused on this yesterday - my main, Madhu, is a lot like RL me in personality, interests, and behavior. My alt is, well, not. I'm not entirely comfortable in my alt, but my alt is really a form of role play for me, a chance to see what it's like to be someone different. Some people already use their mains this way of course!

No Alts here... nothing to hide from, run away from, or stalk to. If I want to have quiet time away, I mute everyone and thumb my nose in the air. If you see me, I am usually a man/cat (Neko) or a surfer dude... (now if I can only remember who Claire said her new alt is...she may be checking up on me...muahhhhh!!!!)

My avi is me, she reacts as I do in most cases, even in RP, she behaves as I would behave in the situation wthin any confines of the Role. If I want to be alone, I ignore IM's or give a polite but firm response to that effect. I haven't been stalked, but I think I can handle that if it happens as well. All of the reasons given are good ones for having an alt, though.

For me it would be merely for Role Play, besides being opposite sex, my characters can vary widely in personality, finding one name that suits all of them would be impossible. I have yet to create an alt for this reason, I have yet to decide what character to adapt to an SL role play, or if I should start a fresh one.

I have 3 alts.
Alt 1 is strictly used to hold funds and inventory for the ActUp Theatre Company. That way I can keep my personal things separate.
Alt 2 is a male and was created to (don't hit me with tomatoes, please).. camp. I freely admit it's not lucrative, but he DID have a legitimate function the other night.
My friend got married last week and I'm best friends with both bride and groom. I had already agreed to be maid of honor, and when the groom asked me to be best man...well my male alt stood in. I have a nice pic of me escorting myself down the aisle. Now he's back in mothballs until he's needed again.
Alt 3 is created but not used. She may be for RP with my fiance's alt in the future.

All the reasons stated.....
One alt is my second group member.
One alt is not in my group and tests all of my scripts, security and rental boxes.
Never thought of a female alt... just didn't occur to me.

1: Roleplay characters: First and foremost I come here to enjoy playing multiple roles. I like being more than one person in roleplay, and sometimes may have as many as 4 characters active in one session, all interacting with the other Players. And my girls and my boys don't have to all have the same fixed name over their head. (Hard to take seriously a big, burly male named "Marybeth Sweetcheeks", or a cute chick named "Gregorovitch Manslayer".). 2: Groups: 25 groups limit isn't enough to keep up with required groups for my business ventures, let alone support groups for various content creators. Also vital for ensuring a land group never drops to one member and vanishes, taking group-owned assets with it. 3: Building assistance: Having an alt on the ground while you build can give you another camera angle on your work. 4: Permissions testing: Does my vendor work right for anyone other then me? If I set the permissions like this... will that prevent the buyer from copying and reselling it? Do these land access restrictions work to protect my skybox? 5: Quiet time: Some of my alts are not in any way associated with my business or normal social ventures. I can put on that personna when I just want some time away from the usual flurry of IM's and casual visitors.
