Is this worth reporting?

Hi

Yesterday I was being harassed by someone while trying to change clothing in one of the temp condos on Noob Island. He basically just kept rapidly opening and closing my door while I was naked. Annoying, for sure. Assuming him to be having newbie problems (the doors are directly opposite each other) I asked if he needed help, but it quickly became clear that he was just being an idiot. I did suggest that he'd return to the teen grid.
This continued for a while, even after I went to another floor, to which he followed.

Most disconcerting, I suddenly received a notice that he accepted my offer of friendship! I certainly did no such thing! Is this even possible? Of course I removed that at once.

He is a 'newbie' but his name suggests that he's a griefer. Is this something that is reportable, or shouldn't I bother? The harassment was just juvenile, but I'm puzzled by the friendship thing.

You run into idiots like that from time to time. But there's no harm done and I doubt the offense is AR-able. Perhaps you invited him to be your friend without realizing it. I have done that a couple of time by a slip of the mouse-click. I did it on Sunday at the SL Ballet's production of "The Nut". I was trying to read the Nutcracker Princes' profile by clicking on his ever moving av through a light beam object (argh) and slipped up. I didn't know it until I got the response he declined my friendship offer. I was really embarrassed and apologized to him AFTER the performance. We actually had a nice chat then. LOL

Yes - if you are sure about the "friendship" offer not being by your choice, you should report that - and focus on that part, because it is a thousand times more worrying than any of the rest of the behavior.

Probably a result of clicking on his "pie chart" to find out more about him and hitting the "Friendship" wedge by mistake. Happens to me sometimes, and like the poster above, I usually apologize for the error. In the case of your naughty eighth-grader (judging his age by his behavior), of course no message is necessary, except maybe adding "Mute."

OHH! Several times with the slip of the mouse I accidentally offered PARTNERSHIP to several people (even to a guy, and my preference is women)
but there are some griefers out there who are real good at hacking so I wouldn't be surprised that is was all instigated by him.

Report the friendship bit, but maybe to a ticket or something and not an AR, really coulda been a fluke somehow.

But opening and closing doors.. they won't do anything for you unfortunately. Get yourself a locking door is all you can do.

How do you offer partnership in-game? Never been able to figure it ou... I used the website to ask my partner since I couldn't find any way in-world...

I'd have ARed it - somebody persistently harassing you and being an idiot, why not? Chances are that he then went on to do the same to other people (and quite likely worse).

Yeah, but if you did that, you'd spend your whole SL life AR-ing people, and that's just no fun.

FYI its correctly called a 'radial menu' :)

I delt with same kind of system when I ran a Neverwinter Nights server. The client used a redial meny as well so SL seems like second hat to me when I first got into it.

Thanks all.

It is possible that I might have hit the friendship wedge (aka piece of the radial menu). I was trying to get info on him but he kept flying around my head and hiding around the corner of the building, so that took a while.

I guess the sad part here is that he's harassing what he assumed to be a newbie - this kind of welcome is surely unpleasant for people who are new to SL.

A slip of the mouse opens the partnership page in your web browser and fills in someone's name?

'cause you can't offer partnership in-game.

redial meny
FYI a "redial meny" is correctly called a "radial menu".:p

Our pie menus are correctly called pie menus. That's why we mostly call them pie menus. They could also be called radial menus, but life is short, why waste time on two syllables that don't add any value?

Hey, there's even a web site about pie menus called piemenus.com. :D No radialmenu.com or radialmenus.com. "Radial menu " and "pie menu are around even in Google hits, with low figures of 39,000 or so each. Wikipedia says they are also called marking menus. Never heard that phrase.
=======================
It occurs to me that a person could make a scripted object that just said "Soand So has accepted your friendship offer" or that used a dialog to display those words. Just to confuse a person.

the other thing that might be helpful to you is to realize you never need to be naked

if you have a shirt on replace it with a shirt ...it will put the new one on take the old one off with no need to be nude same with pants and jackets and all that

AR just "for the record"
12-28-2007 07:38
I would have ARed him.

People always say "nothing will be done". Sure, it won't if no one reports it.

I am sure that there is some kind of database that ARs go to, and I'm also certain that there are "flags" that pop up for the officials if that account gets lots of ARs.

One report may not be acted upon. However, if they have done this to 50 other people who took the time for the AR, this could well be the one that gets them permabanned.

I would report anyone who harassed me this way. IMO, it is behavior that deserves banning. Harassment is allowed way too much.

Personally, I think an AR was in order....granted from what I hear an AR is a crap-shoot at best these days BUT.

You did offer assistence ,in case they were just new and confused...and obviously they were just and idiot, then you tried to walk away from the situation, they followed you and continued the harrasment.

This is a griefer mentality on their part, and if people AR this jack-ass enuff, maybe the Lindens will catch on eventually and do something about it before they up-grade to caging and chat spammers next, and from there who know`s .

Of course they might grow up on their own but a warning or two in their e-mail might speed the process along.

I do tend to ignore alot of minor annoyances, but if someone`s gonna follow me and keep it up...I take that personal and feel it`s DEF! worth an AR, for what good it will do I don`t know, but one can hope someone actually reads the report.

Then again, depending on my mood that day, I may of just left and forgot about it.

I do agree with many here, that some can get carried away with the AR`ing. But there has to be a line when it comes to some thing`s.

To each their own to draw that line though, when and where they choose.

So if I find a group to call the sky color 'green' thats then correct? Its 1/2 of the colors to make blue right?

The technical, and thus correct, term in the industry is 'radial menu'. Just becasue a group is in the habit of using a slang term to name something does not by default make it 'correct'. If you choose the more simplistic, and slang, term thats certainly your choice and wouldnt deny you such even if I could. However I simply though the person would like to know the correct term. If he wishes not to use it thats his (and your) choice.

If they did/do it wouldn't surprise me. Dumbing it down for the masses. Several devs do this to make it more 'user friendly'. EA did it with the Sims2. They simplify everything to the point where I am surprised some people on those forums are computer literate enough to turn on their PC's *chuckle*

I cant really criticize that approach, most devs would kill for the sales numbers of the Sims. so their certainly is some validity and logic to that approach.

And yes I am a PC elitist, I'll save you the trouble for calling me such. *grin*
