From: Ee Maculate Shouldn't there be a full-stop somewhere in that last sentence? It wasn't a sentence. It was an afterthought, enclosed in brackets, which does not always form a sentence in itself, although in this case it could be considered to do so. Convention suggests that a full stop (period for our transatlantic readers) should normally be inserted outside brackets where they occur at the end of a sentence, but I think that approach is inappropriate here as there is no sentence to terminate. Pep (Here is better example of a sentence: Marriage)

Here's one that often appears here:
Content creation is the critical feature of Second Life.
Although it might have been so at one time, at the moment - for the majority of users - content creation is pretty much irrelevant.

From: Conifer Dada Group A) Second Life is a virtual sex game for perverts.
The last time I looked I wasn't a pervert. Where do I sign up at? Do they give sl classes on being one?

Pep (Here is better example of a sentence: Marriage) Perhaps on your side of the pond, but in the U.S. the period is outside when the brackets include only an ending portion of the sentence, inside when the entire sentence is bracketed. So it could be either, depending...

From: Iyoba Tarantal Second Life Misconceptions.
... 2) The same protections that work in real life that keep me from stumbling into content I don't want, will also protect me Second Life. This is a bit complicated, but think...how many times a week do you stumble into a whore house or strip joint in real life, or a store with lots of naked pictures on the wall...unless of course you want to be there? What keeps you out of such places in real life is NOT a PG or M neighborhood rating though there is zoning. More likely you see the sign that says Strip Club or Adult Videos and Novelties and you just walk past that establishment. If you live in Nevada, houses of prostitution are clearly marked and listed as such. No one not interested in that sort of thing need go there.
On Second Life, the stumble-in factor is very high. Last night, I wandered into a night club set up in my neighborhood and found out after walking around that it was a whore house. It is not in operation yet. I could just tell by the architecture, but I had to travel upstairs before I could see that it was not a typical dance club. The other clue was that the place took "applications." If I had not been a somewhat experienced avie, I would not have picked up on that clue. ... Well, this one doesn't make the case. You walk into a place in RL that looks like a biker bar or a whorehouse, you don't wander upstairs or into the back room to make sure, even if no one is there. You back out the front door, unless of course you are a biker or, well, either the john or the service provider. The stumble-in factor is high because people still walk around places they would leave in RL. Until, of course, someone else pops in and then they TP home as quick as possible...

So it could be either, depending... The original criticism was made by someone who lived in England of the usage of English by someone else who lived in England. Pep (Although made on a forum hosted in the US so I concede jurisdiction could be justifiably disputed)

re: Iyoba's post. As I was tp'ing around to look at small land parcels today, I saw more than one shop that had large nudie signs either indoors (but the place had large windows and/or no roof, etc.) or even outdoors. Was it a strip joint or escort service? No, they sold things including 'skins'. And these were PG sims. So yeh, the likelihood of seeing pixel nudity is fairly high wherever you go, including from unintending newbies who haven't figured out how to change clothes in public w/out getting naked yet. Lol (I hid behind trees when I first joined.) Ban lines: I don't like them either but now that I've had a parade of intruders who just wander around while I'm trying to dress I understand them. More sidewalks would be nice but the above is probably why private sims discourage public wandering. There are community based sims, though and non commercial oriented sims. Try searching groups you might like, a lot of times they have their own non profit sims. From: someone Although it might have been so at one time, at the moment - for the majority of users - content creation is pretty much irrelevant. re: Yumi's post - I agree, and it's one reason I enjoyed and stayed SL the second time. You didn't have to be able to build JUST to enjoy staying and/or have something to do here. Enough others already had.

From: Clarissa Lowell So where's my money? also, I can't see Oprah contemplating buying a 512. (She could afford to buy all of SL, I'll bet. It would be interesting to know what she'd do with it! There would be more books, for one thing...not a bad idea...)

Every club would have to shout the person's name like a megaphone when they entered, for one thing. Oh, and the freebies once a year!

Running Second Life doesn't allow people to read any file on your hard drive they feel like.

*** If you leave stuff unattended, people can steal it. *** People can mug you and take your stuff.
There have been a lot of questions along these lines posted recently. I can see where the idea comes from; in most MMORPGs there's some element of looting, robbing and player-killing. I guess it goes back to the misconception that SL is that sort of game (or if you prefer, that SL is a game at all).
Add to the confusion terms like 'content-theft' and issues like copybot, land & money frauds and I can understand how people get the idea they can be robbed.
*** You can be killed/raped/enslaved/forced to mine chocolate for the pixies for all eternity/have your soul stolen by vampires.
Some people need to get a grip on the difference between role-play and the 'reality' of virtual reality.
