OK, so the guy may not be the sharpest tool in the shed sometimes.
His ex used to have his password, but he changed it and created an alt after some obsessive checking up on him by her.
Long story short, she found out about the alt, figured out his new password, hacked into both accounts. Stole 20,000L between the two accounts. Deleted his inventory and friends.
Then when he logged on 1 hour later and while i was talking to him, she changed his password AND contact info. He went to change his password, and could not log in.
He is on a paid account, the owner of the land, and now she has full access while he has none.
So, now what can he do?

Step one he needs to contact his credit card company or PayPal or what ever account his premium charge comes out of and have them cancel any charges from Linden Lab till this is resolved.
Step two contact Linden Lab billing and prepare for some heavy finger wagging for giving out his password and hope they will make things right.
Step three go play J. Geils song “Love Stinks” really loud and file this under - Lessons Learned the Hard Way.

Well, he changed the password, but it wasn't a difficult change apparently, she figured out the new one.
And after a good chewing out from another friend and I...he totally gets the point.

Tell him next time he should make his password at least 10 characters long and a combination of small and capital letters, and numbers. Or even symbols. A bit annoying sometimes, but nobody should be able to 'guess' your password.
I really doubt he'll get his inventory back, but maybe the money yes. Let's hope.

How did she find out about his alt?
How did she figure out his new password?
Why would he log into SL and chit chat before addressing a major security issue, and change the password immediately?
Sorry.....I just hear too many of these stories. The "to make a long story short" ones.
If she found out about the alt...he made it too easy. If she figured out a password....he made it too easy. If he didn't view it as a major security problem....it's too easy. Maybe his whole story is a little "too easy."

From: Hallie Halsey Agreed. Why do people do this? You have never been dumped or cheated on? Try living it once and you'll see how easy it suddenly becomes to do things like that. Its not right. But it feels really good.

I've been dumped a few times and cheated on a few times -- would still never ever do something like this. To me it would still feel totally wrong, not good. .

Correct me if I am wrong but I think a felony only kicks in over 3-400 usd? Is that right? And yes I think doing what she did is wrong. Burning his clothes in the back yard is much much more rewarding.

Well, here's an issue.. its a TOS to give out your passwords. No exceptions. While i feel this is a REALLY bad thing, and he has my sympathy, LL will likely not do ANYTHING, due to the fact he screwed up by giving the password out.
Lesson learned the hard way.

How do you know it feels good? I am sure no one in this forum went through what i went through for 3 years in a RL relationship and i still would not do this sort of thing or anything else remotely vengeful beyond submitting their email or phone number to some service that would bug them with telemarketing or spam.

He picks up the phone and calls LL to have the account frozen pending identity verification that requires him sending his identity documents in for identity verification at which time they change the password and give it to him. In addition they go through the secondary process of investigating the person that hacked the account with possible turn over to law enforcement for processing criminal charges.

Funny Here's the scenario.....you don't have to apply it to this one, but it happens every day. Dude needs a break....his friends keep IMing him....(insert GF if you like).....but he's on to new adventures....he wants some freedom....but some friends will not leave him alone (insert GF again)..... He tries it with an alt.....doesn't work, because some of his new adventures started with his main av, and he wants to continue to log on as his main av for the adventures.....but he keeps being hounded by his friends (insert GF again)....so he simply tells them that his main av was taken over by an ex, or is being used by one of his friends. He continues to use his main av......zero responsibilities for his behavior.....free again. If he gets bored with his new adventures, he simply tells his friends that he has his main av back....and he's back in business. Happens all the time. The "one of my friends is using my av" excuse is a classic.
