Just curious....Will there be a Fee for this "License"? Perhaps a renewable one?

more and more ll have been looking for creative ways to squeeze every last penny of profit out of the economy. Just curious....Will there be a Fee for this "License"? Perhaps a renewable one? |

This may be the wrong solution to a perceived problem, there's been a lot of that going on inside Linden Lab lately, but consider this other side of the coin. In real life we have this organization called the Better Business Bureau. The BBB actually does have teeth, and real life business do not want to get on their bad list. It's very important to have a good rating with them. Even brand new startups are somewhat OK though, in their setup. Granted it's an outfit they legitmately state they know absolutely nothing about, but at least they don't specifically state that the business is a negative just because it's an unknown. There are many reasons why a BBB in SL, WITH TEETH, is also necessary, but as yet nobody's proposals to create such a thing have ever been a viable means of doing so. It would be very nice if the actual BBB would just get on with it and move in and do their thing. This smells to me like LL at least attempting to put together a viable program along the lines of the BBB, even if it's not the right answer. I don't think the licensing is meant be easily aquirable, nor do I expect that the system is meant to even interfere with bad businesses. From the very little info available, I gathered it is only to emphasize the good and reliable businesses. The past years, LL has only moved further and further away from judging or intervening in disputes between residents. Restricting creativity is also not on their list, so I don't expect the "set for sale" option to be gone from prims for normal residents (I would love to see that happen on no-mod/no-transfer items though). It's simply a means for them to reduce the time spent on all the ARs they get. Feel you've been ripped by a vendor? Two possible answers available: 1) "Oh, but that wasn't a registered vendor, I'm sorry, but your SOL. You should consider doing business with certified sellers only" 2) "This was a registered vendor. We will investigate, and if found guilty, he will lose his certificate" Now this is much easier to handle than investigating every AR to see whether it's a dispute that LL will handle. Only 2 seconds to check who's the merchant, then send a standard reply in almost every single case. The remaining hand full of reports are easy to handle for the small g-team. |

Read Cyn's blog post on this. Part of the proposed lan is being suspended for any reason permenantly disqualified you from the program. Subjectivism again. One person who has been suspended for what has been deemed by one of the Gods to be a triviality gets a license, another who has been suspended for the exact same reason is denied a license by another God. Any new program such as has been mooted, has far-reaching consequences for the future SL economy, and all of us with it, should in my opinion start with a clean slate. EOI. I've never been suspended ever for anything. I'm a goody two shoes and I've been in SL in one form or another for yonks. I'm a 5th generation avatar ![]() |

Answering your question:
NO....I do not need LL's help. I built it with hard work and by listening to and "knowing" the customers. I cater to my customers....and that's what makes a business work. I don't need a seal. The customers provide the seal of approval. The concepts LL is describing will be abused by the unscrupulous, just as many other concepts are....but a good business will survive in spite of that. It will take extra effort. If I understand the concept correctly....I can see the person who has stalked me for months, totally using it to try to put me out of business, just as he uses every other tool available. It's a constant effort to stay on top of that, and to mend some of the damage. Maybe one of these days, a concept will come along that actually eases efforts required by good business to conduct good business as usual, one that allows owners to continually stay on top of things, and that will limit the time that we have to spend on the ridiculous things.....but you have technology (rather than face to face contact) - anonymity (no accountability) and Alts (multiplying the anonymity and multiplying the lack of accountability) .....it seems darn near impossible to find a control system that would combat that. We just deal with it. A seal of approval is not going to help. |

The Lab goes from total inaction "who cares" to "we're so concerned" tryin to kill cockroaches with a shotgun overreaction. Measures that fail fail and ever fail. I don't see this going toward a "license" to sell content; I think that they will always allow anyone to sell things. My bet is that this will be an opt-in program. I wouldn't put it past LL to impose a fee to opt in. And I can't see any per-transaction fee being imposed on merchants who opt-in. BUT I can see corporations refusing to deal with any merchant who is not part of the program, and many many individuals making the same decision. . |

If it's not the right answer, why bother wasting everyone's time with it? That's the Linden Way. _____________________
