From: Boy Lane As we just had a long discussion in SLU and assumptions were confirmed: KirstenLee's viewer calls home to pull the startup picture from one of his servers. By doing so it counts user statistics and it collects your IP address. If and what the connection may be used else for we don't know as KLee doesn't provide sources in violation of GPL. Your post implies that Kirsten's viewer is specifically setup to gather user information, it is not.

From: Angel Leviathan Your post implies that Kirsten's viewer is specifically setup to gather user information, it is not. Well, unless you are KLee or you are in possession of the sources I think your statement is unsubstantiated.

Having the source for the viewer wouldn't tell you what use is made of the information it sends by the program receiving it, would it?

From: SuezanneC Baskerville Having the source for the viewer wouldn't tell you what use is made of the information it sends by the program receiving it, would it? Certainly not, but it would at least tell you what information is sent to the collecting server, if any at all. The question here is not really about if and what is sent to a server owned by KLee. It is rather that *something* is sent to a 3rd party, which claimed to have removed calling home features he blamed SL for, by only replacing them with his own. We can speculate, it's pretty pointless. The main issue here is that KLee does not provide the sources for a software that carries a clear GPL license he accepted by using the code. And it is a commercially viable code that can facilitate financial transactions.

From: Love Hastings Have you or others confirmed that it does not include, say, passwords in such communcation? Tough to know that it never will, of course, without the source code... I don't imply that KLee does anything malicious. And I'm certain no passwords are sent across as this would mean some real changes in the code that take some real effort . These are all side factors that may be introduced without anyone noticing. That's why I think it is so important to be transparent and provide sources. I tried to install Ethereal scanner to look into the comms ongoing, but I can't get it to install. The installer seems to be broken. If anyone knows where to get a working version or perhaps another network scanner please let me know.

Thanks Dain, just installed that. The viewer creates a connection to 66.249.89.99 which belongs to Google and resolves to bloggerphotos.l.google.com. That's only at the very startup, so may indeed be just pulling that cheat sheet (which BTW is not KLee's work but comes from http://www.kippiefriedkin.com/2008/07/25/second-life-viewer-cheatsheet). I did not try further if there are more/other connections made as too much data is exchanged.

Let's just say...yay! This is the first time I've actually gotten shadows to work. (They didn't work for me with the last shadow viewer.) And surprisingly it doesn't bring my frame rate down by too much. (Not that my frame rate was that high to begin with.)

I'm still wondering if anyone got shadows working on a card ending with an S like 8800GS or 8800GTS.

All i can say is: I have an 9800GT and every shadow viewer (regardless which one) crashes for me while logging in.
Sometime at the "connect to region" stage sometimes a bit later. So far i followed any tip i could find in the various forums.. it just wont work. Well guess i have to wait for a later release.

@Dain Do you use a non-english windows? If so set the decimal comma to a dot. Also try to update to the latest drivers.

@Dain Could you get my shadow viewer working? That has a different OpenGL implementation than LL/KLee's viewer. http://my.opera.com/boylane/blog/shadow-viewer-1-23-windows-and-linux
