Oh gawd, I got it to work, with much hassle, and my Nvidia GeForce 8600 card is freeking out....but I have ***shadows***! I have shadows and I'm hooked and I have to have more of it. This is *so* good!
http://www.vintfalken.com/kirstens-viewer-sl-shadows-for-the-masses-with-good-enough-pcs/ Obviously, I need to upgrade to make this work right. I guess that means a 8800 or 9000 card at least. But what else? My system has a Intel(R) Core (TM)2 Duo CPU E6650 @ 2.33 Ghz and a 3 gig RAM. I have 500 GB hard drive with an external 650GB external HD. What do I have to do to stop crashing all the time, and use the Shadowviewer? Any suggestions? What's the bleeding edge to run SL optimally these days? _____________________

What do I have to do to stop crashing all the time, and use the Shadowviewer? You can't. The incorporation of shadows into SL is completely pre-beta, and so has a lot of bugs and issues to work on. Yes, in the end, you'll probably want to upgrade a little to run it as smoothly as possible, but after it's been developed more, it should also work without being quite so demanding on your hardware. _____________________

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I crash all the time now on the LL viewer, not the Kirsten 17. And I'd like to fix that, since I'm going to upgrade the video card anyway. It didn't happen six months ago, but something has changed. I just have no idea what.....

Shadows make Second Life more real....
With my "plans" to work at LL, I shall improve both SL and promotions! My "signature" proves a point. _____________________

There are many shadows under the trees right now if you catch the right time and the right location. |

Any suggestions? What's the bleeding edge to run SL optimally these days? I'd say a 8800 or 9800 at least, probably better considering they have been on the gaming market for 3 years, an 8600 is like a minimum spec card for a lot of latest stuff ![]() _____________________

And where is it summer, exactly? Not here, I assure you. The LL 1.23 viewer has shadows but they'll be "beta" at best when released (and hence, buried in the Advanced/Debug Settings). I've been playing with the nightly build, and they look good on my crappy nVidia 8500 GT. Slow as a dog, of course, but they're pretty and it hasn't crashed me yet (this on Linux, but I doubt it matters).

Does this viewer work straight out of the box or do we need to tweak it? I go it running but no shadows.

I couldn't get it to work with my 9800GT.
I kept crashing while trying to change my debug settings as per the Kristen sd2-r7 viewer: 1 In the ‘Advanced’ menu go to ‘Debug Settings’. 2 Find ‘RenderDeffered’ and make sure it is set to ‘FALSE’. 3 Find ‘RenderUseFBO’ and set that one to ‘TRUE’. 4 Go back to ‘RenderDeffered’ and set that to ‘TRUE’ also. I had no troubles in the past using the sd2-r7 viewer, but today it too crashed while accessing the debug settings. So just for the heck of it, I tried doing those setting in the SL RC viewer, and I crashed while trying to reset to default after making the above changes. Go figure.. |

I had to tweak the Debug Settings too, as well as turn off anti-aliasing. And it crashed for me about a half dozen times, but I kept trying and it eventually worked.

Does this viewer work straight out of the box or do we need to tweak it? I go it running but no shadows. There are two checkboxes in the graphics hardware options you need to check to enable shadows. I think they're "OpenGL Framebuffer Objects" and "Enable per-pixel lightning and shadows". You don't have to monkey with debug settings. Anti-aliasing doesn't work in it for me (8800GT). As far as what video card to use, how much money do people want to spend? The 8800GT is history now. The 9800GTX+ and GTS250 have taken its place in the Nvidia lineup. _____________________

Aha! That took a while, Milla's recommendations didn't seem to help until I restarted the client.
OK, it's slow, but then I don't have the world's tweakiest machine. My avatar mesh shadows sometimes disappear, leaving only attachment shadows visible. Some alpha prims on my av don't show properly, some do. I can't edit attachements; regardless of how carefully I click, I only get the options as if I'd clicked my av. That also means I can't detach them without using the menu or inventory. I had written "The build interface doesn't seem to work properly either, as the drag-handles & arrows to move a prim are either missing, or (I suspect) invisible." but after a couple of crashes and relogs, this seems to have fixed itself. Trying to get the frame-rate consoles up seems to crash the client. Obviously this is very much a demo product. I appreciate the huge amount of work that has gone into it, but it won't be my viewer of choice just yet. The shadows look great, though. Having them really adds another layer to the graphic appeal of SL. I look forward to the day when a solid viewer is available, and I can upgrade to a machine that will run it properly. Current specs, for ref: AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual Core 4200+ 2 GB Ram GeForce 9800GT 500Mb Pics to follow. _____________________

KirstenLee strikes again in a massive ignorance of multiple licenses. It happend before so many times and it happend again, no real surprise. Again a nice hit in the face of every contributor to the source code by ignoring GPL which is the worst. But in addition KLee keeps distributing the KDU and SLVoice components that are non-redistributable and licensed to LL. Seems we have an all nice and happy sharing community here
. I just posted that on his blog:"Certainly not original LL sources. You know it and you knew it before. And you ignore it again. Besides distributing components like KDU and Vivox you are not licensed to. I don't understand you. In the end it's coming all for free, just do your little part to be compliant as everybody else is. If LL would not have opensourced their viewer you would not stand a chance to make yourself that nice show off here nor would OLG exist at all. Think about it." _____________________

That confused me too, Kelli, but apparently she's put the edit menu in the same wheel menu she put Appearance and the others, but one level up. Click on the attachment, then on More and you get the full Edit menu. _____________________

The only benefit I can see is making the Appearance menu more accessible to full-prim avatars. _____________________
