Kwaidan, the various layers that make up our av skin and clothing are blended together on our computers, which is called "baking", and sent to LL's server and the baked texture is sent out to other users that we are in viewing range of.

Thus one expects appearance defects caused by problems with our video card, drivers, etc. to be seen by others.

You just switched to nVidia, what model of nVidia, and what version video driver are you using?

Barrowness, what version of video driver are you using?

This problem still keeps coming back again. I don't see how it can be the drivers because I have it on to different machines with different graphics.

I would have thought that LL would have taken care of this, but a LOT of old issues seem to have recurred lately, and I tested this again on a new computer (OMG with an alt), and sure enough, it's still happening.

Yes its like a virus/bacteria that keeps infecting the avatar

My previous video card was nvidia too, but this is an ASUS 9600. Not 'top of the line', but at least a generation better than my old video card. I just got the latest drivers for it installed as well to see if that would fix the problem.

what is so strange is that I see this on other avatars while going around sl.

What is even stranger is that this bug is not being fixed. If it is the graphic card drivers, change what is causing it. Its also happening with Intel graphics.

Something tells me that the palletized textures bug isn't really fixed. For me, I use third party viewers (Kirstens, CoolViewer or Nicholaz) and they all have the option to quit rendering palletized textures. This fixes the problem for me.

This has been answered a couple of times. It should be fixed in the 1.22 viewer when it becomes official. The RC still shows problems. As workaround either disable palletized textures (you have to do this after restart) or use driver 175.19 for nVidia cards, not a newer version.

What I don't understand is why it is that I can see it on two different machines with different graphics at the same time being logged in with two accounts. Whatever it is, is stuck with the avatar, not the viewer. I think everyone can see the black skin, because I also see it on other avatars. If its the viewer, then every avatar would look like that. But the way SL works is a mystery me anyway.

This has been happening to my avatar too, repeatedly and with old or new skins or clothes. Sometimes changing outfits or shoes helps, sometimes not.

I do the CTRL ALT R or D thing and F7 thing a lot; how long that helps varies.

I do have Nvidia and a Mac but hopefully, LL gets this bug fixed soon; it only is an issue in SL.

ETA: Also everyone else can see the shadow av too; so it seems an SL problem not only within the Mac, unless I'm misunderstanding.

It happened to me too. I logged off my nvidia 8800 to my crappy Intel 945 and still saw it. But then, it was remedied by turning off the palletized textures, since I use a non-RC viewer.

Our skins are baked our local systems, the results are sent back to LL, then sent out to others.

So problems baking skins on our machines can be seen on other people's viewers.

Here's Kelly's old post about the topic: http://blog.secondlife.com/2006/09/18/getting-technical-baked-avatar-textures .
