Hi,

I have this problem where I keep getting my lower leg, back of the arms, and back of the neck becoming black. Does anyone know why this happens and how to stop it?

Thanks,

Debra

Happens to me occasionally and I go to Advanced > Character > Rebake Textures and it's fixed. Don't know why it happens though.

If it's just to the waist, it's the footwear bug where your socks and/or shoes are up to your waist. In that case get the release candidate viewer where the bug is fixed.

sounds like an nvidia card

Under advanced options > rendering > features

turn off palletized textures, they are not being rendered right on nvidia based graphics with the new drivers

I don't think its the drivers because I am using Intel graphics. Also, if I take certain clothing off, it goes except for the back of the neck. I have also seen this on other avatars. It also disappears while in Appearence. In the past I could get it to go by shanging shapes and skins. Recently, I did change my skin, but its been ok for a week until today when I bought a new outfit. Its the removal of items from this outfit that makes it go away, except for the back of the neck.

More Info:

It seems that one particular skin in the set has become corrupted by this. It must be an SL bug.

I don't think it will Yuriko because I have looked at this avatar from an alt account using another PC with different viewer, and can see the markings from that account; so it must be the way the server is painting the skin; and it is only one skin in the set. As I said, I have seen the exact same on other avatars in the past. Its a bug. I hope I don't lose that skin because these weren't cheap.

I was experiencing problems with a RAC skin rezzing in rainbow colors at the face and legs, sometimes skin was all black... I had to clear cache, uncheck the partialized textures and rebake... that solved the problem for me...

Hi Debra

Sadly none of the solutions that are listed here or that are listed by searching on google and sl support have helped me with this issue :( I have this issue predominantly with the RC viewer (which sadly I need to use to be able to take snapshots with as the ordinary viewer has issues with that!)

The RC viewer doesn't have the pallatized option anymore so don't try that - and that is where I have the issue anyway! The normal viewer is fairly ok, although it does happen a few times there, but it clears after a while with the ctrl + alt + R..

I have tried updating drivers, rolling them back, a black avatar fix kit, ctrl+alt+f7 and ctrl+alt+R - all to no avail :( I even tried a partial system restore and still no joy - so it seems that there is no quick fix atm :(

Good luck and I hope you get it sorted.

BB :)

you could always try the old scool approach... used to happen that you'd get a corrupt item in inventory, usually a skin, sometimes other cloting... pop into appearance, tweak any related slider even the smallest amount, and poof gone. clearing cache usually works too if it's the only the cached copy that is borked and not the one on the the asset server.

I am using Intel graphics.
What kind, i.e., what model name and or number of Intel graphics?

What versions of video driver are you using?

How much video ram does it have?

What operating system, service pack level, etc.?

Desktop or portable?

If it's off the shelf model of computer what is the manufacturer and model number?

You might try Advanced, Character, Character Tests, Text Male or Test Female, clear cache, restart SL, reapply the skin.

Thank you everyone for trying to help me out with this. I think there is a lot of useful information here that may fix other problems as well when they may appear.

Found out what's happening to me: The skin of a HUD attachment sometimes get's transferred to the avvie skin. But as I said in my previous post, rebaking textures fixes it.

Hi Deb! /me waves at Deb. I might have been one of those other avis you've seen this problem on hmmmm? lol Well glad you brought it here and got a solution, I'll try this too. For me, so far only thing that has halfway worked is the extreme face/body light of the century, it's so bright it lights up the entire SL grid when I come in. But it does get rid of those black shadows, but now I'll try this new fix that you've found.

Are you using two monitors? Every time I saw a blacked out av when I used to Mentor it was down to them using two monitors. Not sure if this is still the problem but if you ARE using two then.......disconnect one and see what happens :)

Rolling back to geforce driver 169.21 solved all my graphical anomalies (black textures on avatar, stretched textures when they were suppose to be shorter, selves, socks, shorts, etc). Nvidia Geforce 7800GS - Windows XP home 32bit

Best way to uninstall nvidia drivers is....
Install a program called "Driver Sweeper"

Uninstall "NVIDIA Drivers" from add/remove programs.

Reboot in safe mode.

Run "Driver Sweeper" and check mark "NVIDIA - display" and click clean.
(This removes all left over garbage that didn't get deleted)

Reboot in normal mode and install 169.21.

Reboot and after start up make all the changes you need (resolution, refresh rate, AA, AF, etc)

Now open your C:\ and delete the folder "NVIDIA". (this is where the driver extracts its contents to be installed, all it is doing is taking up space on the harddrive and serves no further propose)

Empty recycling bin and defrag your hard drive. (I recommend using the defragging program "PerfectDisk 2008". It is superior over the windows default fragging system)

I also recommend installing a program called "CCleaner". Cleans a lot of hidden crap (it once cleaned nearly 1GB of unneeded files) and also fixes registry. If you do decided use this it is recommended to run this just before defragging the hard drive.

You can find all these programs (besides "PerfectDisk 2008" and youll have to buy it or use it as a trial version 30 days) at the website listed below.

There's a thread on this issue at the SLU forums, and one person suggested adjusting the skin tone slider on the skin (assuming it's moddable) a teeny bit before attempting to rebake.

The thread is here: http://www.sluniverse.com/php/vb/general-sl-discussion/23179-black-avatar-issues.html

Well, time to add to this. Just got a new video card, Nvidia, and sure enough, I had this appearing/disappearing black skin problem. I'll lay out what's happened:

1) Wearing a skin with stripes and wearing a tattoo makes my top half turn black. Removing the tattoo fixed this. Switching to a non-striped skin fixed this.

2) Putting on black shoes bases turns the lower half of my body black. Putting on white shoe bases turns the lower half of my body white. This is regardless of skin type.

3) Putting on black ankle socks turns the lower half of my body black. This is regardless of skin type.

Now, I'd say this was my graphics card screwing up on me, except other people see this happen to me. I think this precludes it being my graphics card, because wouldn't that simply screw up my view?

Yes, I'm using two monitors, but this problem was 'fixed' on my old graphics card simply by switching my SL screen to one monitor and rebaking. That's not working here.

Assistance would be appreciated! :>

Kwaidan, the various layers that make up our av skin and clothing are blended together on our computers, which is called "baking", and sent to LL's server and the baked texture is sent out to other users that we are in viewing range of.

Thus one expects appearance defects caused by problems with our video card, drivers, etc. to be seen by others.

You just switched to nVidia, what model of nVidia, and what version video driver are you using?

From WAY back, this problem started when I was using two monitors, and was using Windows, and had SL running on the SECONDARY monitor.
All the same problems and solutions were offered: New drivers, new skins, new clothes, new SL, old SL, etc.
I am now certain the problem STARTED with this, and corrupted skin after skin (and some non prim clothes too). They stay that way, as you know, even after I finally was able to sort out the dual screen problem.
Running SL on my lappy with the corrupted skin? The issue persisted too. I ended up just deleting the blacked out ones, (it was a pesky thing, and infected clothes too, which infected skins and clothes once worn with them). I also made sure from that point on, I never ran SL on a secondary monitor, and it's like any major epidemic, after a while, the problem got quarantined and just never came back.:D
I would have thought that LL would have taken care of this, but a LOT of old issues seem to have recurred lately, and I tested this again on a new computer (OMG with an alt), and sure enough, it's still happening.

My previous video card was nvidia too, but this is an ASUS 9600. Not 'top of the line', but at least a generation better than my old video card. I just got the latest drivers for it installed as well to see if that would fix the problem.
