I have never seen this before and can't find anything about it anywhere, but when i tried to summon one, instead of say:

"Offer a teleport to your location with the following message?"

it said

"God summon user to your location?"

Any clues what thats about? It stopped when i relogged, but I'm curious as it why it did that.

It just means you sent a TP request with view admin options on. It lets you bypass the friends list thing that way.

A "godlike" teleport lure forces the recipient to teleport (or else presumably be disconnected), and coupled with the "godlike" teleport accept, causes the teleport to succeed regardless of the destination's access restrictions, or regardless of source and destination locations being on the teen grid or main grid. Neither is possible any longer without actual god priveleges. I guess the UI showing that text regardless of priveleges is nothing more than a reminder that at one point, nobody thought ahead.

Heh... Did you even get a pop up? For me it was instantaneous. I was still in the middle of my IM and it was like "Totally! That would be a pla...*POOF*" =^-^=

How does that admin thing even work? Out of curiosity I tried to get it once but nothing ever happened.

It's kinda not supposed to work for us... From what I've heard, it was made visibly possible in the SL client because someone was selling a "hacked god-mode" client some time back. But, in turning it on, the only thing you get are a couple minimal overrides. Most of the major 'Linden level" functions are blocked from working. Good thing too. Just imagine the griefing potential. I hope Dimitri get someting out of his video, too.

I'm a bit surprised you never saw evidence of it before. I found that it exists as an island somewhere around the HI/OI locations back when I first became a Mentor and was scanning around that portion of the map. Of course, there is no access to it without that force-teleport, but it can be found on the map. That was one of the coolest region visits I've ever had to-date. (^_^)y

One thing I regret though, is that none of us got a screen shot with the UI in place. We had the most perfect group tags up at the time. (T_T)

Back a few versions ago, the "Advanced" and "Admin" menus were called the "Client" and "Server" menus. But way back before even that, there were the "Debug" and "God" menus. The "Debug" menu was the one you got with Ctrl+Alt+D, but it didn't include all of the options that it does now - it didn't enclude the recorder, or the wireframe options, or the untethered camera, or anything similar. The "God" mode was the Lindens' admin menu, which couldn't be accessed at all except by Linden staff members.

When libsecondlife first came out one of the first changes that anyone made was a system to fool the client into thinking you were a Linden, by sending the packet to the client which says "this user has confirmed as a Linden, unlock the God menu for them".

Since the Lindens knew this wasn't going to go away, their response was to move all of the client-side-only God tools (which could be used given the hack) into the newly named Client menu so that anyone could use them, and to leave the Server side ones (which couldn't be used with the hack, because the server still knows you're not a Linden) in a separate menu. Then, the option to "view Admin options" was there just to satisfy people who wanted the hack.

If you're on the Beta grid you can in fact go further - there's an option "Advenced -> Hacked Godmode" which tells the system you're a Linden in the same way, and is there so that people can test this doesn't open up any loopholes. It still doesn't let you use the server side tools, though.

The "God Summon" message is one of the quirks of having the admin mode set - basically, a Linden Summon just teleports you instantly, with no blue box or consent, and can take you anywhere - including to testing islands, Prelude islands, or - yes - the Cornfield :)

Ya, I'd seen it on the map before, not too long back. But I'd never *seen* it. :-)

I find the Admin function useful for two things:
- Flying in a No Fly area
- Reading the URL for media streams instead of seeing "******"

Just guessing but think it is a reflection or a nod to "God-Mode" where using a cheat code you can step outside of game boundaries and do pretty much what a god would do- like avoid being killed or skip levels like that- A million years ago I played something called Heretic II -it's cheat was to write Kiwi - in the setup of the game- you were then invisible :) Even then I didn't get to pick up the last tome ... :( /me digs frantically thru dust bunnies for moldy old PC Heretic game...

Is it good or bad that I know exactly what that code is from?

Definitely and definitely and
- offering TP to someone not on my friends list that has their online status only visible to friends.

Actually, no! I usually had disasters turned off. I did like to name my cities "Amityville" though...

Once, very soon after starting a new city, I got a newspaper article saying "Your citizens love you so much, they've held a spontaneous parade in your honor". I don't know what I had done to deserve that, especially since soon after that I realized that I'd forgot to set up any water pumps or pipes. Anyway, I never had the parade thing happen before or since.
