My view on MS Windows history:
Win 3.1 - FAIL Win 3.11 - PASS Win95 - FAIL Win98 - PASS WinME - FAIL WinXP - PASS WinVista - FAIL Win7 - PASS .... Anyone seeing a pattern here? (^_^) And, I don't consider Win2K to be a "desktop" windows. It was more the early-adopt-ish Microsoft project to put their desktop-like tools to work on an NT based kernel. (^_^) It's one thing to recognize failure in technology. It's another to fail to recognize technological advancements. XP was Microsoft's way of saying, "Here, we finally wedged NT onto the desktop!" Win2K was best used for servers or as a release candidate for XP. (^_^)y _____________________

Windows 95 was never that great to me...it and the first 98 had the most BSOD/Crash issues I've had with Windows. 98 SE was a good, stable OS. I also liked using W2K as a desktop OS until after XP SP2.
As for MAC OS, I still have a 7.6 laptop running around, in case I need to bring down an alien fleet with a rapidly-coded virus targeting their shield generators. You never know. |

I like Win-ME. It worked fine on my system. I liked the way it looked. I liked the way the search function worked - it thought I wanted to look for files on my hard drive, which is always what I wanted it to do.
Of course, I'm spending part of Saturday night checking out a demo of Proton Media's ProtoSphere, a 3D business meeting system that has just integrated Microsoft Sharepoint into it's system. That might suggest that my tastes are a bit skewed. _____________________

Windows ME comes number four in that list! Windows 98 wasn't too clever until they fixed it with Windows 98 SE. |

Using windows 7 RC and love it. Although to be honest layout wise it is very much like vista. If you don't like navigating around vista you most likely won't be pleased with windows 7. I think basically it was the next version of Vista, but they renamed it because of all the bad press vista got.
I had vista basic on my Emachine when I got it and I didn't mind it to be honest. I liked it better than XP. That being said windows 7 is much faster on my computer. I recently swapped motherboards in my computer and was having problems with drivers for windows 7 and rolled back to vista to see if I could clear it up. I was amazed at how much slower it was, even with the upgrades to my computer. I went from 1 gig of ram and a sempron 2.2 single core to 3 gigs of ram and an Athlon II X2 dual core running at 3.0 gigs. I was getting like 30 frames per second in second life at average with vista, and the absolute best I could get was around 60. I got my driver situation cleared up and reinstalled windows 7 32 bit. My frame rates went up drastically! My average is somewhere around 50 fps with the top end of 195 fps in some places!!!!! Plus my computer in general is a bit snappier with 7 installed. Windows 7 gets a huge thumbs up from me, but like all other new OS's you may have driver issues with some hardware. Nowhere near as bad as with vista though I bet. There are already a ton of drivers out there for 7, and most vista drivers work perfectly fine. And count me as another one that didn't mind ME. Window 98 and ME worked the best for me. I got screwed into using XP and was not that impressed with it. |
