"Residents reported interruption of some services which included object rezzing, L$ transaction and login. This was the result of bringing some login servers online before they were ready."

You've never made a mistake? There's no need to be insulting about it. At least the blog writer was honest about a mistake having been made.

QFT. I can't even begin to imagine how much is involved with running SL. Yes,the f*ck ups can be frustrating. But it happens,to everyone. Not just LL.

yep, I agree

I like that they are honest about it, even when they have to swallow their pride, step up and say we're sorry, we screwed up.

It doesn't matter if you're working on national security, or playing minesweeper, you don't hit the go button before you're ready. A person would be stupid to assume that misconfigured login servers COULDN'T affect the asset and userdata systems.

I am guessing that it was human error...

have you never done something then realized later oops that was not ready to be done?

(I know I have)

NO.

because at every single place where i've been working so far we had quality control and well-tested procedures for handling anything important.

well good for you, must suck though working for such perfect people, can never make a mistake, never be human...

(I prefer working with humans)
yes quality control is good and all, but people are humans, humans do make mistakes...

*shrug*

not debating, just stating my opinion, which I have done, now I shall move on

QA is the gaming undustry is notoriously poor, even companies as big as Sony use minimum wage students to do their QA. I'm sure LL is the same or worse.

QA is considered a "entry" position in game companies right below office boy and the guy who cleans the washroom.

You know that the Lindens do actually read these forums on their tea breaks, so i hope you feel really bad, because now all these other Lindens are pointing their fingers at the Linden who made this mistake and saying "hehehe, you have your own thread in the forums, stupid"

So no tea breaks since someone started a thread trying to organize a lawsuit against them on their own forum? Man, they ARE understaffed.

Some things are bound to go wrong and quite commonly. Imagine how much stuff people upload each day onto Second Life, how many variables of information the servers have to deal with constantly. The amount of uploads alone must be something close to half an exabyte right now if not more. Imagine how many settings that just the little tiny bit of server space dedicated to YOU has to remember every time you log on.

Quit complaining and just get on with it, I say. We all love it for better or for worse.

sl is very frustrating, and we know it's broken a good bit of the time. but that's not the same as calling someone there stupid for making a mistake. they have difficult jobs to do, to say the least.

I would really love to see you quality test 50,000 different people doing 100,000 different tasks at once. Half of those tasks things you never considered being done in the first place. Test/beta grids only go so far in games where all of the content is company created, in a place like SL ..........

Everybody makes mistakes. LL owned up to theirs, at least we know what the problem was.

My 2 biggest mistakes so far:

1) Resetting my group land permissions and then seeing my home and all its contents disappear before my eyes.

2) Meaning to buy 32 sq, m of land for L$400, but accidentally buying the neighbouring 32m for L$3500.

I work for a healthcare company; people can die when some of our systems go down.

We have change control processes in place to prevent this sort of thing from happening. Still, it does anyway from time to time, because people are human and humans make mistakes.

When an engineer makes a mistake like this, whether they lose their job or not depends on whether they followed the change control process. If they did, and a mistake happened anyway - we still bitch them out, but their job is safe. If they didn't follow the process, their job may in jeoprady.

My big concern here isn't that somebody made a mistake: its whether there's a sufficient change control process to prevent mistakes. I hope there is one, but if there isn't, that's a big issue.
