From: Jig Chippewa The entire Eastern Seaboard of the United States and all of Caribbean are in the path of any hurricane that brews off coast of Africa. If it comes to that, Cornwall and Devon are also potential targets (UK had a hurricane in the 1980s). Tornadoes impact the entire central USA and Canada. California and the Pacific Rim are potential targets for Typhoons.
We arent foolhardy building "in the path" of hurricanes; we simply have to live on land. If what we had in the 80s was a hurricane then you are all a bunch of wussies. Pep (The worst thing that happened was that the town of Sevenoaks had to be renamed Fouroaks. )

Two and a half years ago, hurricane force winds ripped through normally placid Vancouver and took down thousands and thousands of trees. Stanley Park was devastated. http://vancouver.ca/PARKS/PARKS/stanley/restoration/background.htm Walking with my daughter to day care the next day, we saw three cars crushed under falling trees like juice boxes--and one car, completely untouched, with a downed tree on either side of it. We saw about a dozen fallen trees on the 2 km walk, including a couple that completely blocked our way, stretched across the road and both sidewalks. The whole spectacle was terrifying, and seeing Stanley Park levelled in parts was terribly moving. One of the weirdest things, though, was that a newspaper that I'd left on the dining table on our balcony, under a clay planting pot, was still there--completely untouched. I don't envy any of you caught in the path of hurricanes!

From: Kyrah Abattoir It must sound clueless but... why is hurricane land even constructible? Take a look at a historical hurricane map. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/pastprofile.shtml#hrhmWe can't all live in Kansas. People need ports for commerce. People who work at the ports need places to live (that are a better commuting distance than Kansas). And services like grocery stores, etc., which need employees, who need places to live.... If you'd like to give up ports, we can all live high and dry from hurricanes. Until then, I'm afraid it's not going to be so easy. From: Jig Chippewa Why do they always make landfall at night? I used to say that. Than in 2004, one slow sweep of a hurricane kept us (central Florida) under at least tropical storm force winds for 36 hours. It's nice to see what's going on, but better when they blow through quickly. We had 3 hurricanes in 6 weeks that year, after going 30 years without a direct hit from a major hurricane. I'm hoping we've got a few more years to go before the next one.

From: Lias Leandros Oi, Don't mention Bermuda. I was in a bungalow on the beach there in 2001 when a hurricane hit. The main hotel said they were sending someone to get me - But I realized I was on my own when the water entered the living room and the lights went out. I grabbed my suitcase and went outside in the night. I was up high but I had to descend into the dirt road to get to the hotel on the other side. And the dirt road was now up to my waist in ocean water. I just assumed sharks were swimming in the black water there. Lightening and trees falling nudged me to plunge in. I screamed all the way across across the road. No more tropical vacations for me. actually sharks don't do so well in stormy waters, attacks on people are much less likely in storm conditions.

I live on the coast of North Carolina. I think the worst we've been through in my memory was Dennis, Dennis (spun around on Cape Hattaras and came back for a second helping) and Floyd. I'd have to go do a search to list all the hurricanes/tropical storms/extra-tropical systems that have hit in the time I've lived here. We've been lucky and haven't taken much damage, even during the worst of the flooding after Floyd. (The surfers love 'em, bless their hearts.)
Should I go out on a limb here and confess that I find hurricanes thrilling and I get a little boost from watching the tropical weather each summer? Riding one out is just incredible, and when it looked like we might move inland, I was very sad at the thought that I wouldn't get to do that any more. (Oddly, though, I DETEST nor'easters and get a little edgy every time one of those is supposed to move through...)
Cat 4 is scary, though - I sure hope Bill weakens in the coming days. Thanks for the heads-up, though we're not in its path.

From: Jig Chippewa Thanks. It's Cat.2 at moment, I believe. This season's gonna be bad. Pity we cant shelter in sl. But slers should maintain a close watch and inform when news is heard. The season's been exceptionally mild...three months without a single named storm. It's heating up now, but last I saw, Bill was projected to turn north and miss.
