There's, uh, probably a lot of things you didn't know about lindens. Another, another interesting, uh, lindenism, uh, there are only three jobs available to a linden. The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

I am in New York City. My emergency gear is my iPhone and the telephone number to the Japanese delivery place up the street.

Oi, Don't mention Bermuda. I was in a bungalow on the beach there in 2001 when a hurricane hit. The main hotel said they were sending someone to get me - But I realized I was on my own when the water entered the living room and the lights went out. I grabbed my suitcase and went outside in the night. I was up high but I had to descend into the dirt road to get to the hotel on the other side. And the dirt road was now up to my waist in ocean water. I just assumed sharks were swimming in the black water there. Lightening and trees falling nudged me to plunge in. I screamed all the way across across the road. No more tropical vacations for me.

Hurricane Bill? The critical thing must be: who is going to pay it?

That's awful, Lias. :/
Closest I got to any of that was being on spring break just at the outside of the hurricane season. Pretty strong wind and rain but nothing I couldn't walk through, and I'm a strange one who actually likes storms. Not when I'm swimming across the road, though. Glad you got through it alright. |

Just got up so not sure what the storms are doing- it's a grey and wet day in Miami so far. Andrew has been the only one that has affected me in my memory and that was pretty drastic. I remember Homestead looked like a bomb had been dropped on it and where we live - about a half hour to 45 mins from ground zero- also looked like a warzone - but certainly not to the degree that Homestead did.
The last couple storm seasons have not been real noticeable out my way - mostly just rain events. Nonetheless, Floridians know to be prepared. Water, canned goods etc- As for why do people build in the way of hurricanes- uhm- As far as the US is concerned, you would be talking about several states- and the islands, etc. I can see saying don't build on cliffs subject to mudslides, or don't build on the coast subject to erosion - but the hurricane and earthquake thing.. _____________________

right now I am on palm coast, st augustine area.. I am sitting on the balcony of the vacation condo looking at clear blue sky, brilliant orange sun and smooth atlantic ocean...
Soon I will make the walk along the boardwalk to the beach below... It is hard to imagine there is a storm brewing out there with 135mph winds making its way to the eastern coast. I am going to milk this vacation for all its worth... But when/if the clouds roll in.. I am out of here! round and round she goes, where she lands.. only God knows. |

Bill is a Cat4 now. Moving towards Maine and Nova Scotia. Forecasters (haha) suggest it may downgrade in colder water to a Cat1 but no evidence at moment. Landfall late Monday early Tuesday. Why do they always make landfall at night?
I have had solid experience of two hurricanes and property I own has been impacted by a further three. None of them have been kind to me. _____________________

Build it anyway . . . Pep ( . . . then complain about not being able to get property insurance.) The entire Eastern Seaboard of the United States and all of Caribbean are in the path of any hurricane that brews off coast of Africa. If it comes to that, Cornwall and Devon are also potential targets (UK had a hurricane in the 1980s). Tornadoes impact the entire central USA and Canada. California and the Pacific Rim are potential targets for Typhoons. We arent foolhardy building "in the path" of hurricanes; we simply have to live on land. _____________________

We have had much milder hurricane seasons lately. I think this one will be the same. They recently lowered the forecast for the season.
