I am not sure what steps LL have taken to keep this secure on each persons system, now they have released the Open Source code.. but judging by the devistation that copybot has caused, not enough I would speculate.
As far as the viewer is concerned there is no difference between a prim/linkset you own that's mod, one you own that's no-mod, and one you don't own. The sim sends all of the prim params over since the viewer needs them to be able to render the object.

The "protection" on the client-side is (simplified):

if canMod
display the params in the Edit window
else
show blanks

Simply replacing the condition with true will end you with a "manual copybot" so the entry-level skill required to copy prims is really next to nothing anymore.

Yes, I already got that concept... which was stated at the begining of my post... I was bringing it to others attention that the ONLY protection is made Clientside.. which makes the abilty for copybot/avatarbot to exist.
IMHO, that was a mistake in the coding.. and until the internet connections develop sufficently to support full streaming content and negating such things as caches.. content protection will always be an issue.

How many times have you seen a picture on a webpage, that doesn't appear to let you copy/download it? Just look in your ie cache.. it may have some strange name, but it will be there. You cannot copy protect, what you give away in the first place, you can only rely on catching theives once the deed is done, assuming you troll the internet and find where it next appears. Art of course doesn't need to be re-shown over the internet, it can be sold in a 'local' shop as reproduction prints.

Right. But I guess lack of protected content-streaming all the way to the screen (a la the dreaded HDCP) makes it academic whether the coding enforces protection client- or server-side. As long as prim parameters, for example, or textures are sent to the viewer and rendered in the OpenGL drivers, such content will be easily copied regardless of permissions.

Hmmm, if I can clone myself then send the clone to work for me. Or have a few clones and get jobs for them.
Oh wait, this doesn't work in RL does it... :(

This is indeed a copybot. The version that I encountered didn't get and save all of the textures (though it could) - it just referred to them by key. It wasn't any sort of theft device, just a sort of an amusement.

It's quite eerie actually. I would show pictures directly here but we STILL cannot do that, so you might wish to just visit

For a little more insight into the command set for such a bot, see:

Looks like "clone" is just one more feature for a platform capable of diverse tasks, such as camping, land/item purchase (driven from IM which is automatically generated from a list of items), etc.. I found this interesting, but I guess it's old hat for some folks!

Some clone pics for your enjoyment.

For those unfamiliar with copying avatars and objects and such in Second Life, just do a Google search with the words libsecondlife and clone , or libsecondlife and copybot, and you will have much more reading material than you will want.
