Did I miss something? Why not just ignore the questionable account and set up a new one? Eventually, you may learn enough to cancel the first account. I think LL keeps it available for about 2 months, in case you want to reactivate.

For those asking if a confirmation email is received, yes it is (even if you bypass the affiliation stuff and just use the LL default avatar page), and you have to click a link in it to activate your account. I tried to create an alt for testing just over a week ago, and was hit with this bug: [In short: "Incomplete registration for some new accounts - One of our web servers is affecting registration, producing the error message 'Your Second Life account could not be created at this time'. If you are receiving this message, please go to the support page of our website, and submit a support ticket under the heading of 'I cannot create an account'."] Thereafter the account I had originally named was listed as 'taken' using that email address, but I couldn't access it. I never got an activation email for it, so I couldn't log into it. I had to create another account a day or so later, once the problem had been fixed, and use that instead.

I don't know if this is relevant, but they have some requirement now that you can't access the forums until you've logged in-world once.

So do new users now have to respond to an activation email or not?

"Lane" is not a new name, they were from about a year ago.
Ms. Lane, you need to contact Linden Lab's customer support, there is nobody here that can resolve your issues, whatever they are...

Hi Maiyuka, I think I understand what you are talking about and this happened to me. Someone has created a Second Life account using your email address. Pretty easy to do as email addresses end up all over the place on spammers lists. You've received an email from Second Life about this account which has made you investigate where the email came from and to discover the above. You've found out the name of the account registered with your email address (it would have been on the email) and the password (via password recovery). When logging in you've discovered that the account has apparently never been used. Brand new avatar standing on initiation island (or whatever it's called). Am I right? If I am...Don't Panic! The person who created this account can do nothing except send Second Life emails to you, which you can block with your email software. This has happened to me and when I checked out the avatar (using Search People) they looked to be inactive accounts. I think spammers create them thinking they can use SL but then they realise it's not worth it, or something. I believe the issues you're having with the account you created are completely unrelated. I suggest raising a support ticket to LL about that a separate issue. With regards to deleting the account the other person made. I'm not sure it's possible to delete an account. Does anyone know?

If the email includes the name, why would they need to do a "Forgot Name"? "Did a 'Forgot Name' got the name," Do you have to answer security questions in the password recovery process?

No. i think she so poorly described the problem, we are all confused, but top posters seemed to get it right. Sounds like when she attempted to log in after launching the app, there was another name in the login field from the last time someone else in the OPs house logged in. They are using the OPs COMPUTER not EMAIL, otherwise OP would have all the registration info in her email. It's clearly someone in the house.
Another note: OP does not write in a manner consistent with a person 18+

I have at least three accounts linked to my one yahoo email account. Trout, Mumfizz and the alt I made for the alt party a while back. If someone is using the OP's computer to log on to SL, then she is on her own to figure out who it is and maybe beat a confession out of them. If she is upset because someone used her email account to register an SL account, she should still be able to register her own account with that email address. I know there was an issue with Hotmail accounts, but other accounts should not be giving her any problems.
Edit - and if it is someone in her household, she should change her email password. If they are using it to sign up for accounts with various sites, she needs to shut that down asap.

Also I think your allowed up to 5 accounts per E-mail address, the OP makes reference to wanting to start her own account but needs the inactive one deleated first. She should not have to get the account deleated just to create a new one...unless her family members created another 4 she dosnt know about.

I think the forum date goes by the date you joined the FORUM. There's a two month difference on my join dates..........forum vs SL.
