There is some lag tonight. Chat takes a while to come on screen. Some stuff like that.

Hmm.. maybe more like the check engine light. Great, it's lit. Why is it lit? Who the heck knows, but it's $80 to find out!

A friend of ours, a retired mechanic, refers to that light as the 'money light'. His preferred solution is a bit of duct tape, applied over the offending display. (He does check the engine, just to make sure, but he'll be darned if he's going to pay $80 for a mechanic with the right equipment to just turn the light off.)

That light has been on in my car for the past year and my car is running perfectly. I figure, if I'd made it this long, it's a false warning.

Time dilation, sim and physics fps are great (.99 and 44-45 all the time).

I grew more and more wary of trusting these stats in my efforts to figure out what was causing sim stalls, SVC-4616.

Go to any high-traffic place and fly in circles with the stats bar open. Just fly then hold the up and left arrow keys down. As people TP in, the sim will stop responding for some amount of time (depending on how heavy the person TPing is - I've seen it up to 30 seconds) and you will start flying straight as the sim updates stop and client-side prediction takes over.

When this happens, let go of the arrow keys and start watching the sim fps. As the sim starts working again and you rubber band back to where you were, the fps value will not always show that anything has happened..

I've seen this, more than a few times, be reporting 45 sim fps when the stall starts then start again at 40 sim fps even though the sim was totally dead for 15-20 seconds.

Ask your customer to try walking around a bit when this happens. If they can turn in place but not actually move forward, you're probably being bit by SVC-4616.

/me wants a ferrit picture on her stats bar. Maybe one nibbling on her bandwidth indicator or something...

I shudder to think of what you'd get instead.
Well, if it was an impossible wish, I'd get a ferret. :D

I wish they had actually followed up on that, I haven't seen it since the pilot.

There are some other possibilities. One is since the server runs multiple copies of the simulator program, one of the *other* copies may be lagged to hell and back, eating up all the network bandwith, etc.

Another is some cable internet companies provide a high burst data rate for a short while. They do this both to fast download small stuff, and to get good results when people run a speed test. Since cable loops are a shared resource, someone else may be temporarily hogging the loop with such a burst.

Nope and nope. This is definitely not a client-side problem or one related to non-LL networking. It happens on every sim - everything and everybody stops when somebody TPs in. At clubs, where people tend to be a bit more tricked out and you get a lot of folks coming and going, it's really painful.

G'head and test it out yourself. It's really easy to reproduce, even on an idle region.

/me quotes her concierge chat on this from a couple months ago..

From: someone
Linden: Hmm. The server looks very good - steady FPS at 45, which is perfect. You've plenty of spare time too, which is an indicator that the simulator has lots of power left to run new things. I'm getting a bit of lag client-side, though, from things loading and rezzing. But that's very individual depending on the machine. Has the performance changed here lately?
Sindy_Tsure: this is not my region.. just somewhere i know that's quiet and also has the problem
Sindy_Tsure: though it's not as severe as on (my home)
Sindy_Tsure: it's also nice to look at
Linden: It's pretty here! :) But I'm not seeing lag of any note.
Sindy_Tsure: /me can demonstrate
Linden: Sure, go ahead
Sindy_Tsure: if you fly in circles - just hold left & up arrows down - i will tp away and come back
Sindy_Tsure: when i come back, you'll probably go flying straight for a bit
Sindy_Tsure: chat will get lost, if you were chatting, etc, etc
Sindy_Tsure: say go and i'll tp out and back
Linden: Wow.
Sindy_Tsure: see?
Sindy_Tsure: did it freeze up on you?
Linden: Yes, it totally froze.
Sindy_Tsure: yay! i'm not crazy!!
Sindy_Tsure: well, not for that anyway

And compared to a lot of people I see, I'm really not that heavy, prim- or script-wise.

edit: and note that I was there then TPed away and came right back so this isn't a "first time you rez a mono script" or getting the sims cache loaded up or anything like that...
