From: Ewan Mureaux "A friends'" first avatar in 2006 had a rude name but could be logged in for at least a year and a half, then it was disabled. Then "my friend" while checking through his accounts noticed his first had been disabled, wanting back the older born on date so that people did not think he was an noob LL changed the name to something more wholesome after submittal of some identity verification, in this case a birth certificate. Inventory appeared to remain in tact. This was done by ticket and took a couple of days.
The name should actually be irrelevant as the key is king of the who you are in terms of the database thing. Some people have said that the true key is generated from the name itself. If they then use that as a check at different points, that would explain why it was an issue. OTOH, most data bases have been able to change the primary key automatically for some time. The accounting systems I support routinely do it through 60 or more data strings without a hiccup.

From: Key MacMoragh At least it isn't something asinine or peppered with numbers.
I don't think there's any way to warn new users that they're going to be walking around like a person with whatever name they choose. i'm not sure what you mean by you don't think there's a way to warn new users. But, on the sign up page (Create an Account Step 1) where you pick your surname for SL and create your avatars first name it says this: From: someone About your name
In Second Life, your avatar has a first and last name.
Your first name is something you create. Your last name is something you pick from a list that we provide.
Your first name can be any combination of letters and numbers 2–31 characters in length. But note that first names are case sensitive: 'Philip' and 'philip' are different names.
<<Second Life names cannot be changed, so take a moment to create a name you like.>>

I guess I meant you can't really explain how a person is going to experience having whatever name they choose. The *feeling* part of it. You can't really say, "Don't pick a stupid or unpronounceable name, because it's YOUR name; it's what people will call you when they talk to you." That's what I mean.

From: LittleMe Jewell This would imply that people are expected to READ something before they sign up or agree to it. Yes, they are. You have to check the box labeled "I have read and accept the Terms of Service Agreement." It's generally wise to read what you're legally agreeing to.

Of course it is (hence my sarcastic smiley when I made that comment), but based upon my knowledge of people, I would be willing to bet that less than 10% read much of anything that they sign or agree to.

I would argue that stupid people fall outside Second Life's target audience anyway, so who cares what happens to them?

From: Baloo Uriza I would argue that stupid people fall outside Second Life's target audience anyway, so who cares what happens to them? They may fall outside LL's target audience but an awful lot of them still manage to find their way in - and if you want to know what happens to them, many end up carrying on specious arguments with me . . . Pep ( . . . and thus providing me with considerable entertainment!)

From: Pserendipity Daniels Actually I was joking.
Pep (There are *no* rude words in the Welsh language; it's all poetry . . . ) Oh, there ARE-I even learnt a few in my Welsh class, but this is far more comprehensive: http://www.clwbmalucachu.co.uk/cheat/cheat_swearing.htm

From: LittleMe Jewell In that case, their backend database and programs were not designed right to being with. Well, they're in MySQL.
