Why do SL forum users hate surveys so much? I've never seen this in other online communities and I don't get it.

Power imbalance.

Vague agenda.

Mysterious credentials.

Arrogance implied in assumption we're here to be their survey taking monkeydrones.

Mistrust.

Pie throwing opportunity.

Case in point:

Besides - it just adds to the ideas for a new blog!

Cheers!

Not enough doubletalk.

Ahh.. see we missed that about you seeing as how your join date is NOW.

So ok- you are then an alt of an established Resident - perhaps - oh my, gasp! an Ancient..... Do share then with us, the wisdom of your life in SL -

And -how has this influenced your own "Friend's List"?

From your survey:

"Second Life vs. Real Life Friends - A gender study
Answers marked with a * are required.
1. The Survey
This survey aims to collect, compare, and analyze the general observation that there is a stark difference between the gender of one’s friends in RL vs SL. It seems to this observer that in RL, the stereotype is for men to have mostly male friends and women to have mostly female friends — at least it seems that way. However, in SL it seems to be just the opposite. What is it about SL that leads to this reversal compared to RL? "

What conclusions do you draw from this observed effect? Stipulating that you are in fact correct, what is your estimation as to why such a disparity exists?

Interesting conclusion that wouldn't have been made if the OP were not already a resident and been inworld to see it.
I took the survey.

"Similarly, some of the first educators and researchers in SL were a bit clumsy in their approach. There were early incidents in which Residents felt—rightly—that they were being spied upon or treated like guinea pigs rather than human beings. Imagine how you would feel if an entire class of students set up right next to your vacation hideaway, left trash lying around, logged your conversations, and posted them on the Internet with criticism and mean-spirited comments. This is exactly what happened to some early Residents. Things have improved greatly in the years since then, but sometimes SL Residents are still subject to that kind of inconsiderate behavior. For example, a constant stream of researchers (often students) posts on the Second Life official forums requesting that Residents please take their surveys. Most of these surveys include the same questions that have been asked over and over. Often they aren't spell-checked, or refer to SL as a game—a sure way to irritate a substantial number of Residents. Some Residents make a hobby of critiquing these surveys, pointing out how the questions and their wording make it clear that the researcher isn't familiar with Second Life. Some post outright that they are sick of badly planned surveys and suggest that the researchers log in and do their own research."

There it is.

I took the survey and nothing bad has happened to me yet as far as I know.
I didn't go in world to count my friends and their genders. But I think I made a fairly good guess. A lot of the people on my friends list are people I met once who offered me friendship. I would just feel too rude declining. More of them are male than female because I guess for a while there I was more attractive to men than women. Now when someone I don't know offers me friendship I just quit so I don't have to answer - it's only mildly inconvenient to come back somewhere else. I spend most of my in world time working alone.

My real friends, in SL, are mostly people I work with or know from the forums and I think they are about equally male and female. Some of the people I consider friends aren't on my friends list.

Ps I was bored and took your survey... I don't care about anonymity so you can find me by my comment about how your forgot to ask about my friends apparent vs applied gender/humanity/sexuality.

if that doesn't help then track:
absexual, anthrocurious, polyamorous, lesbian =)

(and yes I even answered seriously... I probably broke your assumption though. my RL friends pretty much match the ones in SL.... ODD.
