I frequently put on a 7 foot tall male av who is totally buffed out but somehow the name "Susie Boffin" gives him away. Can anyone offer me some hints on how to better disguise my alt?

Try calling yourself Mr. Susie Boffin.

Alt refers to an alternate account, with a different name. It's possible, of course, to morph your avatar into lots of different appearances, all under the same name, but they are not alts. I'm not sure what we call those! It's not something I do.

At it's base, "alt" just refers to an alternate account. In a sense, if you have more than one account, they are all alternatives to each other.

Many people probably use "account," "avatar," and "persona" interchangeably. For most people, one account has only one signficant avatar concept, with which the user uses one specific persona.

Some people though, particularly roleplayers, may switch avatars and personae using the account. They may think of their different avatars/personae as "alts."

When someone distinguishes between "main" and "alt," "main" typically refers to the account with which the user most closely identifies. To many people, it may be the first account created; it may be the avatar that most closely resembles them in real life; it may simply be their favorite or the one they use the most.

A lot of people use alts for roleplaying purposes, or just experimenting with different versions of themselves. Some people use alts for utilitarian purposes (testing scripts, for example).

I am finding my self giggling over how many answers to the same thing in this thread when it just came up in another thread that people answer the same thing someone else answered

S'OK. SL has a place for those easily amused. Now that I think about it, SL is for people easily amused. The rest are to provide those people with entertainment.
