I have heard several different definitions of an Alt Avie so would like to see what all of you think an Alt Avie is

Two or more avitars from the same rl person. For example I have one alt named Zeus. He pops into the forums once in a while to try to stir up an alt revolt. But usually I just keep him locked up in the dungeon. :D

Usually, there are "mains" and "alts." The Main is the account used most by the individual, while an Alt is an occasional whimsically (or not so whimsically) used account. I have 2 alts now, which are used strictly for accounting purposes. Other people use alts to get away from the regular crowd.

My view is that the main av is the one that is used the most. An alt is any other av, even if it's used quite a lot.

Sometimes a main av isn't the one that was created first, because some people change the one they use the most.

Another use for an alt is to test products. Sometimes just making sure the box opens correctly and the contents rez correctly is too dull a job to ask an actual friend to do, so the maker can log on with an alt who's been supplied with enough Lindens to make the purchase, and go through the process that actual buyers would go through, to make sure everthing works.

Some will consider the Main to be the first account created, but my definition is pretty much the same as Phil's. While Lil was not the first SL account I created, it is pretty much the only account I use, therefore I consider it the Main account.

That is what I thought an Alt was too but...some have told me that if I have the same name but use two (2) different Avie's then I have an alt.

For example: I use my name here but come online as a man then I use the same name and come on as a woman.

I've never heard that description of an alt. Alts, when referred to in the forum, are always avs with different registrations - different names.

That is not an Alt, that is just changing avi forms and lots of folks do that.

your not using different Avi's really it's the same but with a different look,i know they sell Avi packages and they do contain a whole look.but they are just different looks of the same Avatar

so Avi may have different meaning alt does not it's a secondary , tertiary, quaternary, quinary, senary, septenary or octonary account, i hope your not using more than 8.

So our lesson is whoever told you that needs to be watched for the other stuff they tell you

The Alt FAQ:

and according to the glossary ():

"An alternate account (or "alt" for short) is an account used by a resident for something other than their usual activity or to do things in privacy (such as building or scripting)."

(And yes, I realize that I'm no fun.)

What they said. If you change SHAPES, SKINS, etc but still use the same login account name, then you are using the same ACCOUNT. An "avatar" can be a dragon, sphere, woman, furry, man, child, etc, and still use the same name (aka account.)

For example: My name (or account) is Oryx Tempel, but I can "wear" an avatar of my usual human female, or I can wear a wolf, dragon, robot, etc. avatar. If Soji Slade shows up in a minotaur outfit, someone might say "cool avatar, Soji!" but they would never say "cool alt, Soji!" because he's still Soji Slade. Does that make sense?

An "alt" is a completely different account, with different first and last names and login information, and possibly associated e-mail address. I was seriously confused by the whole thing at first. :)

Alt refers to an alternate account, with a different name. It's possible, of course, to morph your avatar into lots of different appearances, all under the same name, but they are not alts. I'm not sure what we call those! It's not something I do.

You could have two identical looking alts as twins, as different accounts, possibly even using the same surname - but they would be alts of each other.

Perhaps you made a minor mistake when you created your alt. Perhaps staying away from first names like Damian or Lilith are a good way to start.

I thought the definition of an Alt was that you had another Avie with a different name and account. As far as the person goes who gave me this information...I am always on guard to any information they give :)

Thanks for all the comments

No, that is not an alt. That is just having more than one form. If that was the definition of an alt, then Ceera Murakami has over 80 alts, because I collect avatar shapes and forms - dragon, fox, dog, human, all sorts of variations...

No, an alt is just any account owned by the same person that is used less than their main account. Like Ceera Kitsune is my socialization and playtime alt, where Ceera Murakami is my business-owning main account.

It could be argued that one could have more than one "main" account, if they are played as entirely different individuals. For example if I had a male alt that I played as a completely seperate individual, and played that male as much as I do my main female account, then I suppose you could consider both accounts "main" accounts. I believe that as far as LL is concerned, any account after the first one that you created is an alt, even if a later-created account now gets far more use.

I frequently put on a 7 foot tall male av who is totally buffed out but somehow the name "Susie Boffin" gives him away. Can anyone offer me some hints on how to better disguise my alt?

I have an alt I made as an identical twin to my main AV, thinking I would use her to "get away" and all that. Turned out even though she's identical in appearance to my main, it doesn't work that way. She still feels different and I ended up not really "playing" her.

Maybe she's not "me" because she's not lugging around that 20k inventory my main does...

I used to go with the definition of "Main" being the original account. That would make me an alt, even though the "Main" rarely logs in these days. We are both premium, although she has a much sweeter deal due to her age.

Honestly, it can get a little confusing.
