Hello Hadyn, welcome to SL. You wont catch any virus from downloading SL, the only virus you'll get is a cold in rl from lack of sleep and draining your immune system while glued to the game.
sits back and waits patiently for her cookie.

*Nibbles on my cookie*
For what it's worth, in close to three years of dealing with SL, I have NEVER had a legitimate virus, on Mac or on PC, that originated with Second Life.
On occasion, many years ago, some people would get false mesages from their antivirus or firewall software that SL was doing something strange durring installation. But I believe they improved the installers since then, to eliminate the source of that false positive warning.

From: Ceera Murakami Thanks for the nice comments, everyone.
Amaranthim? Could you fix one little thing in the copy of my post that you did? There's one typo in the second paragraph, where it says "go in rides" and I meant to type "go on rides". I am fixing that here, but only you can fix the copy you moved. No problem!

Welcome Hadyn. Since last night things for me and several friends have bit rough in world, textures not loading, etc slowness can be caused by lag. Some days this happens.

FD- are you using the regular client or the release candidate? I have all kind of trouble with the regular one but the candidate works like a dream.

Hi Hadyn! Welcome to the Second Life (tm) that will over run your first life!
Are you M's alt by chance?

Am I the first to have my virus checker pick up a virus that has originated within SL? Virus checket kept going mad so I decided to look at the origin which was in my SL cache under Textures (6). I haven't accepted anything apart from notecards and stuff from my groups so I have no clue where it originated.
Anyone else had this problem, or am I the first?

Anyone else had this problem, or am I the first? It's not necessarily a virus. It is probable that a sequence of binary bits in a texture file matched one of the virus signatures being checked by your AV scanner. If you put enough monkeys in a room with binary typewriters, one of them would eventually produce what looked like a virus signature. You might like to set your scanner options to exclude the SL Cache folder from real-time scanning. If your machine is scanning every texture file coming in, that's just got to impose a huge load and slow everything down for you.

I've had Second Life installed on my computer for seven months & have not had a virus. I'd say it's completely safe.

From: Sling Trebuchet I'm kinda surprised that nobody has though to suggest that Haydn seek out Anelpirate Franizzi for some advice on the pimping scene. I thought that's what HIP was for.

It showed up as an ACG virus and I just deleted the 'infected' file it pointed to (which had been quarantined). My machine is running quite fast so the checker doesn't seem to be affecting its performance.

Just as an aside, I have to wonder what the odds are for that sort of random false positive, especially in an image file. That has got to be a really rare circumstance.

Has anyone else had a problem with viruses? Do u think its safe? How do I know for sure that it won't harm my computer? Please answer this asap Given the fact that it has a very high probability of addicting you and having you running out the door trying to figure out how you can afford a more powerful computer with really cool graphics capabilities, I would say that the only virus is Second Life itself. But at least it is a fun virus. BTW -- It is not a game. At least not in the sense that there is any real purpose or goal to accomplish.

Please. Second life is an adult environment, and Iknow you feel like you're ready for it and you can handle it, but you aren't. Please consider the teen grid until you are an adult. It harms all of us when teens access the adult grid. It means we all have to be paranoid in the way we interact with friends; it makes SL look very bad to others, and it is harmful to you as you develop mentally. Please consider the teen grid. the adult grid will be here for you when you're an adult, and it will still be virus free, altough it will likely still be pretty buggy. I'm applying for a government grant to study this theory. All I need is a bunch of typewriters, a LOT of monkeys, a train car full of bananas, and a video camera so I can upload the whole mess to Youtube.
