Mostly I run the RC viewer. I keep copies of the release viewer and OnRez around just in case I need them. I haven't used any of the Nicholaz viewers for a while because they're based on somewhat old code at this point (so is OnRez, for that matter, the current one is based on 1.19.1)... and in my role as an art blogger/critic that would sometimes cause a problem. (For example, there was a pair of works out this week that use the new LSL ability to detect the coordinates of an object tough; they don't work in any pre-1.20 viewer.)
On my systems the Windlight viewers work better than any pre-Windlight graphics code so I don't see any reason to keep around any of the 1.18 or 1.19.0-based viewers.

From: Boy Lane I play with the RC but I wont publish it. The 1.21 sucks, 1.22 sucks even more. If you want a good viewer use 1.19.0.5 R42a. If you are lucky you may catch a sneak peak in the comments at best Boy Awwes... At least on my system, 1.22 is starting to look like a move in the right direction again. Except for texture priorities. (T_T) Really... I LOVE your viewer and was dedicated to it until the 1.22 RC came out... I'll give just about anything a try and stick with what serves me best. Sadly, I've had to give up a long list of perks your CV offers in order to get the increased overall performance I see in 1.22. (T_T) Oh well... Hopefully this RC sees enough iterations so that its actually final when the Lindens say it is. 1.21 was a rushed pice of **** and needed to see iterations well into 10 and beyond in my opinion. (>_< 1.22 is proof of that. (^_^)y

To get an idea about all the open issues have a look at Jira: http://jira.secondlife.com/secure/IssueNavigator.jspa?mode=hide&requestId=11732

Cool Viewer has finally been released in a new Windows version for the 1.22.5 RC + updated to 1.19.0.5 R44 (non windlight for slower machines) and 1.21.6.0 R12 (windlight standard viewer). Remember what I wrote, the RC is full of bugs . Don't blame me when it crashes and suddenly you lose an Openspace island *chuckles*. Have fun! Boy

Imprudence doesn't have sound right now, but it'll get it next release, iirc.
I really can't tell much difference either, other than fonts.

Honestly, I'm working with Nicholaz EC-h, which is SL 1.19.1.4. I am a little nervous about changing, because this version still has the system skirt bug.... and I've got no idea how many people would not see my skirt if I decided to wear system skirts again! Are most people on 1.21++ ?

i picked up the Nicholas EC viewer like a year ago maybe..the reason was the memory leaks you would get from the official viewer.. i noticed right away just how much the leaks made a difference in what felt like lag..that and the crashes of 5 times more or less a day went to about 5 times in the whole year..
i wouldn't mind checking out some other viewers to see how they run.. which ones are mac and which ones are windows?

Noob question: what's a viewer...?
I'm guessing it's the user interface? If so, what are the differences between them? Is it just aesthetic or do they make improvements to the game?

I think I noticed a bit of improvement in texture loading for RC5, so I think that's a good move there. I also see in one forum post that RC6 will see direct improvements in texture loading. I'm in wait-and-see mode for now, but will surely load CV1.22.5 tonight. Thanks! (^_^)y

Hippo viewer 0.4.0 (based on 1.21.6) here. It doesn't seem to make a lot of difference connecting to SL, it's aimed mostly at OpenSim users. I think I'll go back to Nicholaz OS-q for a while.

Snarky answer: Whichever one happens to work!
Actual answer: I am using the RC at the moment, because I have this oddly optimistic hope that LL will finally realize that they need to fix all of the major bugs that are reported to them. I have used Nicholaz's wonderful viewer in the past, because he did fix major memory leaks that makes/made SL unusable for me at the time.

I used Nicholaz EC (1.19) until I discovered that my sculpties looked totally different (read: FUBAR) to people running the official viewer 1.20, so I had to switch to the official viewer 1.20 to ensure "quality control".
I've just installed 1.21 this week and if no major problems occur then I will stick with 1.21.

It's the Second Life program you run on your computer. Some add features, like dynamic shadows, or plugins for use with some devices in SL. Some are based on older versions of the source code for older computers. Some have slightly different interfaces, like the friends list & chat windows.

I thought the Nicholaz viewerswere no more, that he stopped updating them? I would love to go back to that, the memory leaks on the RC are killers.

Boy Just curious, how can one lose an OS when the RC crashes,i use it all the time and have had a few crashes but everything is still there when i go back in. I will say though, when it crashes and i try to go back in i usually get a "region is in the process of logging out" ,message,so i usually go back in with the 1 21 with no problem,

I mainly use Kirsten's client to reduce lag (seems to help) and her ShadowDraft client for photos (yummmm, shadows).
I'm noticing a few clients mentioned that I hadn't heard of, is there a list out there of all 3rd party clients?
Windows XP Pro (tried vista on a computer that more then met the requirements, got tired of my mouse pointer skipping from the slowness)
