heyas;
or perhaps i should say... 'which generation' of viewer do you use?
i use 3 generations.
1: nicholaz bleeding edge, which is... 'the viewer before windlight.' 2: nicholaz eye candy which is windlight. and 3: RC, which is the generation after the current generation which is apparently NOT windlight, but the thing that came after windlight and doesn't have a name???
im not actually interested in WHICH viewer, or WHICH platform, but which generation people use. because with the RC (which i understand is also in the currently 'current' viewer), is the option to mirror sculpty shapes. i'm using mirrored sculpties in my next build, but i noticed in the 'old, pre-windlight' generation, those sculpties do not render as mirrored, so my object looks fubar.
therefore, i would like to guage how many people (if any) use the older generations of viewers that can't percieve the mirrored sculpties. also any comments or explanations on client generations might be helpful. or at least make it amusing!

Remember, the first rule of thumb in prototyping/testing: As long as the requirements are not mainstream, your invention/prototype/product has no future on the mainstream market. What does this mean? simple: people are lazy, people are also carefull (waiting for general acceptance of a requirement, before using it themselves. E.g waiting for the first reviews or mouth to mouth experiences), exceptions granted. In your case, one who can actually use/see/experiment with your product (mirrored sculpts), require a viewer that is compatible with it. A NON mainstream viewer as requirement. See the commercial problem? Most of us are generation 2, since that is the mainstream. (stable, official technical level, deployed). with generation 2, it's generation two in terms of the SL viewer, not your mentioned dirrived version (nicholas something viewer), since that isn't mainstream either. If you step out of band, you taking risks, and also less supportiveness from users, cause of the requirements needed to use your product. However, to keep infront of the wave, you can idle your products, and wait till the requirement is going mainstream, and then release it asap. You're then ahead of the commercial herd of vendors. Btw. I'm gen2 (latest "stable" SL viewer).

2 and will go to 3, when it gets to the point where it's not changing too much.
I use the official SL client, though.

I currently use gen 2 viewer but switch to gen 3 when it becomes stable enough to run for 24 hours straight when not being activly used, usualy this is when cool sl viewer starts porting to the rc.

The most current stable viewer for me has proven rather laggy so went back to a prior third party and am now considering Nicholaz for other options - but afraid of the set up involved from what i have heard since i prefer plug and play stuff rather than having to think about it all.

The current LL viewer, 1.21.6, or Kirsten's Shadowdraft 2-R7. I assume both of those are generation 2 (windlight) on your list.

I mostly use 1.21 (windlight), but drop back to Nich BE (1.18.5) when I get tired of things taking too long to rez. Seems to me that every version from Windlight on has required more and more time to rezz the objects.
I still have, and sometimes use, every version in between those (1.19.0, 1.19.1, 1.20) and I do have the latest RC (1.22) installed, but seldom use it.

I do not use Nicholaz or RC, so I guess I'm in no generation.

The current official viewer on one machine, and Nicholaz on the machine I'm stuck with when others in the household are hogging the good one.

The RC, to make sure not too much of my stuff will be broken when it becomes official. So I'm probably not representative. I sure know what you mean about lagging viewer releases: Not being able to rely on ubiquitous llDetectedTouch*() makes for scripts too hideous to write, even by my lax standards.

Can or does LL provide viewer usage stats?
I strongly suspect that the overwhelming bulk of users will be using the LL provided Release viewer, mostly the latest one released, or a previous version of it.

For most of my time, I use the current approved Linden Lab client. When LL has a Release Candidate brewing that seems to address or possibly break features I care about, I try to use the RC. I generally avoid the non-LL clients, though I have used the Nickolas client in the past. I run Mac OSX 10.5.5 on one system, and Windows XP SP2 on my other system.

I use the current viewer, the Shadow Draft viewer, and the current RC. I've logged in with RealXtend, too, but only once.

I've been in the 1.21 Cool View client up until the 1.22 RC came out. While I like the CV features better, the RC is just much less crashy/laggy for me, so I'm sticking with it until Boy puts out a 1.22 version of CV. (^_^)y

From: Imnotgoing Sideways so I'm sticking with it until Boy puts out a 1.22 version of CV. (^_^)y I play with the RC but I wont publish it. The 1.21 sucks, 1.22 sucks even more. If you want a good viewer use 1.19.0.5 R42a. If you are lucky you may catch a sneak peak in the comments at best Boy

At the moment I'm using the latest SL standard viewer. I use the RC if there's a particularly intersting new feature being tested.
