You know what would be more creepy? If they had your picture on top of a bed and they had a poseball of them humping the picture.

Oh yeah, that would be more creepy. It would also have been a far more interesting pic to start this thread with.

You know what would be even more creepy? If you were walking past a sex shop and saw that they were selling poseable sex dolls with your face.

Of course, it would be even creepier if you actually bought one.

I saw the same thing in a shop. Although it didn't really bother me, I still don't know what the purpose of having one is.

Well, you see Isa.. some people have a hard time getting a date. Or maybe it has been awhile between dates. Those dolls are used for the purpose of..

What?

OH.. you meant the signs! *facepalm*

Yeah, no clue why someone would think they are needed either.

You know what would be even more creepierer? Opening your significant other's closet/drawers to find a poseball sex doll with your mothers face.

Or their mother's face.

Actually... One you set a picture in your 2nd Life profile pic, a copy is made to SL's web server. That's where the profile pic script pulls the images from. (^_^)y
The script extracts the texture UUID from the page and uses that UUID with llSetTexture. The telling fact is that the image on search is downscaled and has "Second Life Search" superimposed on it precisely to prevent people from using it as a way to grab/steal textures.

Manual way:
* use http://taterunino.net/searchform.html to search for your profile
* open it
* right-click on the piccie and pick "Properties" (probably different on non-IE browsers)
* the location will be in the form of: http://secondlife.com/app/image/xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx/1

xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx is the texture UUID of the texture you set in your profile

* right-click on yourself, pick Profile
* click on your piccie and you'll get the texture picker with the texture selected already (assumes your inventory is fully fetched or it won't pre-select it)
* right-click on the texture and pick "Copy Asset UUID"

Paste the UUID into chat and you'll notice it's the exact same as the one you got from search. The profile picture shown inside SL with that scripts is the exact same as the one you have inventory.

Create a script that uses llSetTexture("UUID-goes-here", ALL_SIDES); and you have a full permission prim with the texture on it. If it's your texture or someone's you have permission to use, no problem, if it's someone else's texture you just infringed (or committed "texture theft" in popular terms).

The thing is... /app/image is the PUBLIC server location I'm talking about. That's not the original texture. That's a copy of the texture with your avatar's UUID as a marker. (^_^)

What's displayed in *search* isn't the original texture, no. What's displayed *in-world* however is.

As I pointed out before, it's easy enough to see for yourself. Go somewhere where that script is being used... the picture in search has "Second Life Search" super-imposed on it, the in-world one doesn't.

If you want absolute proof, use a viewer that doesn't have the texture key grabbing "feature" disabled and compare the texture UUID on the prim to the UUID of the one you have in inventory. They'll match, it is the same texture.

Okay... I'll accept that... I missed the watermark. (^_^)

I still wonder what's the mess about over having a public display of a publicly posted picture that's available in a public profile. (=_=)

To anyone who doesn't want their profile information seen (Pictures, text, whatever)... Blank out your profile... Delete... Delete... Done... Mission accomplished. (^_^)y

Because "public" does not mean "free for everyone to use". LL has permission to display those images, you do not. You can link to someone's profile URL fine, but you can not use those textures for whatever *you* might want to do with them.

Does the script hurt anyone? No, it doesn't.
Does it display copyrighted textures without permission? Yes, it does.
Is it right to infringe on IP if you're not doing any harm? The answer has to be no, although few will care.

There is no difference between a snapshot you make and a texture someone sells in a store like TRU. Just like you can't grab texture keys off the walls at TRU, you can't grab the texture keys off of search. Both are equally wrong.

I do not see the big deal

anyone could have your pic, all they need to do is zoom in on you and click, snapshot done

can we do anything about it, doubt it, just like anyone taking your pic in public, implied consent by being in public (if it were not, then imagine all the photogs having to get consent from all the "stars" out there)

So your point is: if you can snapshot it, it's alright. And since you can snapshot it, you might as well grab the original texture?

You just legitimized copybot and texture theft.

You're mixing up two very different things here: the script isn't snapshotting you as you get near it. If that was the case, then you'd probably have a point. (Although Anshe did file a successful DMCA on everyone that showed snapshots/video of her being griefed)

That's not what's happening though. It's grabbing the key to a copyrighted texture and slapping that onto a prim without prior permission.

The fact that it's a snapshot of an avie isn't important, the fact that it's someone else's work you don't have permission to use is.

it isn't stealing textures. it's a temp reveal from a script that grabs the closest profile in the area. next time someone comes around, the pic will change.

they are all over SL. everywhere you go. if you jump this guy for it, you have to attack everyone who does it. but, it's just the newest novelty, trend, fad, whatever. it'll be boring soon enough, and go away like all the other fads. (except bling, i hope bling never goes away completely - i like shiny things LOL)

maybe ask him to move it to the other side of his land so your mug doesn't come up on it everytime you go 'home'?

Actually... In my favorite country, the United States, it does mean that. It's called "Fair Use". Sadly, Disney doesn't believe in it, but the federal courts do. (^_^)y

You're not using it along with anything else, you're simply displaying it as-is with nothing more to it than that which makes it hard to claim fair use since it doesn't fit into any defendable context.
You're not also using it for public use, but for display in public as an attraction/a curiousity.
You're also using the texture at full, original resolution instead of a thumbnail.

In most cases the picture will have no commercial value which is about the only pro-"fair use" point you have, but someone may be vain enough to sell copies of their profile picture or have art they created and sell in-world as their profile picture in which case you don't even have that and you'd have no way of knowing in advance.

it's not even on 'public' display. it's on private land and you are a peeping tom if you look.

The last one I saw was at the entrance to a store. I'm pretty sure store owners want peeping toms and peeping uhm... errr.. tomettes to oggle their wares? :p

It's not just about a single instance of the script being next door to the OP's parcel, you can find it in quite a few places in-world.

In my defense, I don't feel like I was peeping when it was not inside a structure and mounted on the side of a hill on a 512. I never argued they couldn't have it on their private land.

I think my main thing is that your profile is your advertisement of you. It's meant to be public, available, and visible. Finding a way to make it even more public and visible gets my thumbs up any day. (=_=)y

I'm still having epic LULZ over the time I was in that store. My profile pic is my main (kid) avatar and seeing a 3 meter snapshot of my silly little face in 'that kind of store' was just hilarious. Some of the other people in the store were quite shocked to see it and were asking if the shop was trying to promote S&M Age Players. I looked pretty Plain Jane and 5'5" at the time, so nobody suspected it was me in the least. (^_^)y
