So, I logged in tonight and one of my neighbors in my beautiful home sim must have dumped a bunch of land today. It happens, no biggy. The wierd thing is I found this on one of the parcels nearest my house. :

It is my profile pick and my name is flaoting over it in hover text. Looks like things may be about to get interesting at the home place. :D

STALKER!

There are these silly signs starting to pop up around that snag your profile pic and put your name over them. First time I saw it I was taken aback too. If someone else goes near that pic it will likely change to their profile.[/size]

If not.. call the SL cops stat! :D

You've made a new friend! Or they've just got one of those picture frames that grabs the name and profile pic of someone close by. Either way you may want to lock the doors and windows tonight.

Macphisto beat me to it.

I kinda like seeing those picture frames in someone's business, because my profile pic is of my business and not my face. It feels like I'm getting a free ad.

Yeah, I think it is a scanner, but it freaks me out because it scans over half of my land which means if I am home, my face is up in lights. That parcel has sold to an end user, so this appears to be the new decor.

Yes, and settle down inside knowing my full bright face is 5 meters high, just around the corner. Cozy. :p

Maybe I should put a more...shall we say "interesting" photo in my profile for awhile. This could be fun.

Nimue, you may like to change your profile pic temporarily. Have some fun with it.

See who owns the sign, take the pic from his/her profile and load it when you are home. :D

You can AR it, or file a DMCA if you feel like it.

The fact that you gave LL permission to distribute your content/IP (a texture in this case) doesn''t mean a resident has permission to use that texture on a prim.

I'm not sure that it can be DMCA'd because it is using the public profile. I've seen a few of these lately. The ones I have seen are a scripted product that scans your avatar ID, grabs your profile picture from search, and then displays it in world. It is a really creepy experience.

Oops. My bad. Was just playing with the script to see how well it works. I'll take it down by the end of the week. ^_^()

If they were using HTML-on-a-prim to display your profile page that would be fine, but that's very different from grabbing the texture key and applying it to a prim.

Just because something is public doesn't mean IP rights go out the window. LL can display it wherever it likes by means of the TOS we all agreed to, but a resident would need permission from you (or from whoever took the picture depending) before slapping the texture onto a prim.

(Yes I do realize it's nitpicking over something that's harmless :p)

Actually, it's close to HTML on a prim... The pic comes from an HTTP server for Second Life profiles. (=_=)

It was funny, the other day I went to a rock clothing store that had one. I was in my biggie shape because it was a rather "mature" place. People were walking by in the skin section when my profile pic came up on the poster. They were having a serious "What the heck?!?!" moment seeing a kid avatar face in the store. They had no idea who it was. (^_^)y

In theory... if you set the texture you use for your profile pic to be no-copy/no-trans, the scanner ought not to be able to paste it on the prim.

Of course, if you were really concerned about your image being plastered up for people to see it, you wouldn't have posted it in this thread were even more people will see it. That would make no sense ;)

And I wouldn't use a pic as my forum avatar either. It was just really wierd to log in and find a giant pic of myself on someone else's land.

Actually... One you set a picture in your 2nd Life profile pic, a copy is made to SL's web server. That's where the profile pic script pulls the images from. (^_^)y

You know what would be more creepy? If they had your picture on top of a bed and they had a poseball of them humping the picture.

STAY OUTTA MY SKYBOX!!!! :o

I did see one of these signs where it gave you the option to click it if you didn't want to be included. I did appreciate the thought behind that a lot. :)

Saw it a club once- my Profile pic is a crane - and I was still horrified- I left and did not return. I can't see why anyone would think this would attract customers- talk- yes- but return business? Not from me anyway.

Just to give more info for reference should anyone read this thread, be in the same or simillar circumstances and not get as quick a removal as Nimue...

There have been inworld reports of Lindens taking down these profile picture display prims if someone ARs them. Though how timely this will be is anyones guess.

Apparantely accessing the search web server in such a way is considered (at least atm) as an exploit and against TOS.
