I was encouraged to make this a standalone topic. So I do. Please vote if discrimination concerns you. Thank you! http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-2736+++ Please remove "Ladyboy" from the list of automatically filtered Adult keys. The word "Ladyboy" or it's Thai origin "Kathoey" ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ladyboy) is commonly used and accepted in Asia (but not limited to that) to describe the 3rd gender, or in other words as synonymous for transgender people in a transition Male-to-Female (MTF). "Ladyboy" by no means constitute anything Adult activity, unless LL considers terms like female, male, lesbian, gay, transgender etc. would constitute Adult activity by itself. I own a long running group in SecondLife "Ladyboy Dreams" with more than 200 members and supporters. The group is voluntarily flagged as "Mature" since it's beginnings 2 years ago. This however doesn't mean we necessarily encourage or participate in any activities that LL defines as Adult. In contrary we do expect the same protection from potentially offensive Adult content as anyone else who considers themselves as falling under PG can. By having "Ladyboy" listed in my profile I am automatically flagged as Adult and this right is denied me. The same time others who are not interested in Adult activities are denied to find an existing support group they are looking for. Unacceptable. Using "Ladyboy" to tag anyone as involved in adult activities is an outright discrimination of not only a large part of SecondLife's LGBT population but their friends, families and supporters. I request the removal of the term "Ladyboy" from the list of Adult keys. +++

Is there a definitive list of adult keys anywhere? Is it, or will it be fixed, and if not, will changes be publicly informed? Is the list only in English? Pep (sorry if this is already answered elsewhere, but "adult keys" in search only brings up this thread)

There was an unofficial list quoted in http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-4149File attachment: Adult search filter research.txt To be sure about certain words you need to test them by yourself.

From: Pserendipity Daniels Is the list only in English? Now that is one of the best questions ever, considering the fact that the European residents according to some statistics outnumber the US ones by now...

From: Pserendipity Daniels Is there a definitive list of adult keys anywhere? Is it, or will it be fixed, and if not, will changes be publicly informed? Is the list only in English? Pep (sorry if this is already answered elsewhere, but "adult keys" in search only brings up this thread) Hi Pep - there's no definitive list, but some residents searched likely terms when the latest RC viewer was released. A Second Life wiki was started, but LL pulled it down; Lord Sullivan has made pages available on his site, however, and the known list to date can be found here <http://www.slapt.me/wiki/index.php/Adult_Content_Keywords> LL insists that this list is neither accurate nor complete, which is probably true on both counts, not least because they themselves originally misspelled words (e.g. 'beastiality' was censored, 'bestiality' was not), and other obscene words are known to be missing. Certain changes have been made as they have realised the error of their ways; thus, the animal issue has been 'corrected' by filtering both the accurate and inaccurate spelling! Differences between American English and British English have unsurprisingly not been taken into account, so the beloved 'ass' of A Midsummer Night's Dream is a filtered word, whereas 'arse' is not. This appears to be the case only on SLXstreet and website search, however; inworld, a search for 'ass' in the RC viewer returns some highly adult sites using only the PG filter. Many examples serve to highlight the inefficiency and idiocy of a non-contextual search engine, as various contributors to the Upcoming Changes thread have pointed out. The RC viewer has also been taken off the downloads page as a result of this and many other problems (e.g. failure to save preferences). Some explanatory notecards, written by residents, have been translated into the major European languages and handed out, some information is slowly making its way into the South American community, and there is now very active discussion taking place in the German forums. To the best of my knowledge, the Japanese, Korean and Chinese communities are almost totally unaware of the proposed changes. Nothing 'official' has been made available by LL in any language other than English.

As this already has almost universal approval among respondents, I can tell I'm stepping into a potential minefield here. I'll try to make my opinion as clear as possible and not start a slagging match.
In the UK at least, my perception is that 'ladyboy' is used only in an patronising, semi-pejorative way for MtF transsexuals, often in the sex or porn industry. I'd not be happy to be referred to as such. I'm well aware that in its place of origin 'kathoey' is not so heavily loaded, but that's not the term under discussion.
While neither term necessarily implies sexual activity, 'ladyboy' is strongly associated with the sex industry and pornography. Google 'ladyboy' with safe-search off. Every result on the first page, apart from the wikipedia entry, is sex related. Try the same search for 'transsexual'. Mostly support groups and news stories, with a much more neutral slant. I see Google as a pretty effective straw poll of western opinion.
I can predict a response that by allowing 'ladyboy' to be added to a list of Adult search words, LL would be further consigning it to the porn ghetto, and some effort to save it is commendable. I think it's already beyond salvage in this context. To anyone who's voting on this: your principles may be sound, but your judgement seems lacking.

From: Pserendipity Daniels Is the list only in English? So far, yes, but even if they would add german - only for axample - I know around 30-40 german dialects... This will be fun. They work written too. Everyone knows their meanings in german speaking countries, but for US-americans it will be impossible to learn that all for their censoring filters. End every day a new slang or dialect word appears... languages are in most cases flexible. Italy, France, Spain knows even different local and regional dialects, very complex. So, to find workarounds per national community is easy. Oh and the UK... - irish slang, walisian slang, scottlandish slang, celtic words...and much more, even alone London has several dialects to offer I think... Not all there speaking finest Queen-Oxford. The cowboys from Linden Lab have no clue about languages. They think in chewing-gum-english. They think the world in chewing-gum-english. They think, that Paris speaks like Marseille and Napoli speaks like Milano and Munich speaks like Berlin, because LL knows it not better. If one from New York says "hi" on the phone then one from San Francasico says "hi" too. Not so in germany. Each region there has its specialities. Even in the most simple things is all different per region and local. So, if one is creative, one can use dialects instead of mainstream-german. The same works for other european countries too. Europe is full of languages and offers an enormous diversity of dialects per language. Have fun. Lindens! Hehehe

However the world doesn't rotate around Google or SL . Kumi wrote a good comment in that Jira you may want to read. It tells a lot. I'm not going to argue, I've learned it is fruitless a long time ago. Just try to think how you would feel if someone tells you bluntly in your face you are a hooker or a faggot.

You got my support. The whole idea of filter lists is nothing but censorship, and just plain does not work in a blind word-match usage like LL established, where context does not matter. Any "filter" that can't distinguish between "This is an Arults-only XXX Playground!" and "This is a childern's playground, absolutely NO XXX activities permitted!" is one that should not be implemented at all.
The filter lists, as implemented so far, only hide content from users, while making it extremely likely that someone doing a TP to an apparently "innocent" location will find themselves in a brothel or XXX store that had to use cryptic or low-key code words or phrases to identify what they offer.

OMG - that reminds me of the original filtering that was being done by the Net Nanny software. I gave it a try and promptly tossed it when my 10-yr old son could not do internet research on the reproductive cycle of dolphins because there were *bad* words on those web pages. It also reminds me of the asinine filter software that my current employer uses. I just cannot believe that in this day and age, especially given how far search engines and technology in general have come, that LL cannot manage to figure out how to use *context* in deciding what to filter. ETA -- Oh, and voted on your issue also. LL is really getting way too ridiculous on this.

From: Boy Lane You are entitled to your opinion and nobody will blame you for that. However the world doesn't rotate around Google or SL . I was at pains to point out in my post that I only used Google as a 'straw poll' of Western opinion. With over several hundred million search inquiries every day, you have to give its results some credibility. And whether the world revolves around SL or not (I'm aware it doesn't), this thread, its subject matter, the JIRA and the search terms we are discussing relate ENTIRELY to SL. So don't cloud the issue with irrelevancies. From: Boy Lane Kumi wrote a good comment in that Jira you may want to read. It tells a lot. I'm not going to argue, I've learned it is fruitless a long time ago. Just try to think how you would feel if someone tells you bluntly in your face you are a hooker or a faggot. Kumi is a good friend and is entitled to her opinion as anyone else. We don't agree on every subject. Nothing she said is inaccurate, but some of it I find naive.

Isn't "shemale" the same type of thing, only the opposite (or maybe the same direction)? I noted on the list that it is apparently being considered Adult.

Shemale is another term for MtF transsexuals which is generally seen as derogatory and strongly linked with the sex industry.
