Don't forget you can also rent pure tier by the sqm direct from certain residents such as myself. It's a pretty simple solution to this problem.

No it's not. What on earth makes you think it is?

No.
*IF* it had been noticed and commented upon (in this thread even), someone might have named it Moreland.

Oh, I don't know -- how about the law? Check out the Wikipedia definition:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defamation

Calling someone a thief in a blog does actually sound like it is covered in the "is the communication of a statement that makes a false claim, expressively stated or implied to be factual, that may give an individual, business, product, group, government or nation a negative image" part -- libel being written, slander being spoken.

Calling LL thiefs was expressly designed by Darien in his/her/its blog to cast a "negative image" upon LL, and therefore is intentional libel. Even given that few bother with such mindless twaddle, doesn't make it right.

Calling someone a thief IS actually libel, even on a "3rd party blog", as well as being distasteful. As for Karma -- I'm now $110,000L richer, I guess my Karma's good...

But I'm glad you know I'm right.

I don't think you're right. Apparently you have had a hard time deciphering that I think you are vile, which is my opinion, and which I am entitled to. Let me just be really clear about that so there are no more misunderstandings.

I do not think that you are right, nor to I have a very high opinion of you. So please don't "slander" or "libel" my good name by implying that I in some way agree with you.

Land prices are always going up and down but who really cares except for the land speculators? I know I sure don't. Linden Lab makes it's big bucks off of the tier paid and not the money we pay each other for land.

It cracks me up that someone had reported that Jack Linden was going to cut back on releasing sims since some have not had any bids. Instead there are 20 full mainland sims right now available for auction.

I think anyone who owned Mainland before prices went into the toilet might have a reason to care.

If only the minimum parcel size was 512m, 99% of the problems with ad-farms and false pricing would cease overnight.

That's not a workable solution as sometimes you need to subdivide a small part of a parcel with different restrictions to the rest.

We were at his OH last Wednesday when the subject came up, and he indicated no such thing. In fact, he indicated that the lack of bids was not troubling in any way, and that they were going to proceed as planned.

Sunday, 5 more sims went no-bid, and there are at least another 30-40 in queue for this week. There's no telling how many of them there will be on "Moreland", as it looks to be the Western tip of another Corsica-sized continent.

So, BAU. It's the same mentality they have been going with for everything else.

Down to US$750 for a mainland sim? If I had enough money I'd buy myself one right now and go build-crazy. As it is I'll just have to dream about it and keep on filling up sandboxes.

As an owner of mainland I really don't care if it drops to $1 per metre because if nything I plan to buy not sell, and the land I have I brought to use, not for it's resale investment value.
If RL house values dropped to 50% would I care, no not really because I have my home and if I ever buy another it will be selling this one.
Was the fact my last home went up in value from $90k to $260k a good thing when I sold it? No way, I had to borrow a heap more money to upgrade that I will pay interest on.

You need more education. It's only libel if it isn't true, and you didn't include the proviso that it isn't true. Calling someone a thief isn't libel.

That could be an idea that backfires before long. What if LL's intention is to get as much land out there as possible, and then increase the tier?

..or, as suggested by a friend, their intention is to get away from charging for land up-front at all, and just work on tier (with an increase or not)?

It wouldn't surprise me, since that is the most common method to rent webservers nowadays. Most places wither don't have a setup fee, or their setup fee is rather minimal, usually one month's rent up-front.

Actually it depends on who says it, who it is about and how it is said. If it is stated as an opinion then it is legal. If it concerns a public figure, they have very limited protections. To the point that Larry Flynt can say that Jerry Falwell "lost his virginity in an outhouse to his mother" and it is protected. If the person making the claim is not in a position to have valid knowledge then it is usually protected speech. And of course in America at least the truth is always a defense.

Someone misreported his answer then.

I think the fact that people are not bidding on some of these sims is proof that most land speculators are getting wise to the fact that land flipping is very risky business right now. I see the minimum going to $500 in the near future. I'm starting to think they won't raise tier, but I kinda hope they do because I'd love to see us all revolt with our wallets, tier down and cash out.

What do you think his answer was?

It sorta seems like this has been LL's plan - drive supply to the point where people aren't even bidding on full mainland sims any more. Not sure why they'd do that but the way they've been growing mainland seems to fit it.

If that _is_ the plan, why wouldn't Jack answer the way that was reported?

I'm saying I trust in Talarus' answer and that someone on SLU just posted that Jack said if sims weren't selling, they would cut back on offering them. No big deal.

I don't see why any smart company would increase demand to the point where there product no longer had buyers, but I don't look at LL as a smart company.

One wouldn't think they'd do that, but ... imagine if LL wanted to raise Mainland tier and didn't want everybody to leave. If the market were first flooded with sims to tank prices, then a freeze on printing new land announced coincident with the tier increase, some landholders just might decide to keep paying tier on the off-chance the market will improve.

Yes, a ton of people would keep paying tier. I just wouldn't be one of them.

I think they get one or the other.. Increase tier OR not piss a ton of people off.

Unless the plan is to drive people off the mainland and onto private islands, which I could see them doing as they've never wanted to have to actively manage the mainland. Things like LDPW and the mainland flood sorta shoot that this might be Jacks plan, though.

Maybe it's just about giving the current rats (and ferret faces) a bigger cage.
