Chickens and what to do with them

Sion chickens, many residents seem to be getting involved in them. Nothing wrong with that if it weren't that these chickens create massive amounts of lag because of collisions.
A few chickens lag out an entire sim without much trouble. People are getting evicted without much notice from their land because of the fact they have a chicken farm on their island or land.

Is there or are there residents who have found creative solutions which allows them to breed their chickens and spawn their eggs in a way they don't create massive lag?

Any creative feedback on this would be appreciated. I'm aware these chickens are becoming popular and are a form of entertainment to many, yet the creator seems not able to create a system that doesn't suck up all the resources of a sim.

Colonel Sanders has the right idea about chickens!

I find many pets are cute but laggy, it's quite a quandry because it's a nice accessory.

People have 1 or 2 pets on their island at most, they keep 15 to 20 chickens, on top of that there are all kinds of devices to spawn eggs, then the eggs also form collisions so it is more than a few laggy pets. The owners are very concerned about their chickens as the eggs seem to have some sort of financial value.

We have chickens out behind the store now too. I like to woof at them, but my store co-owner does not like me to chase them - she's very attached to the things and spends lots of money feeding them. That's the racket - you have to feed them special food or they die. You also cannot take them into your inventory or they die.

The creator keeps updating them to try to reduce the lag, and the Lindens have set a limit of 100 of the things per mainland region, apparently. People breed them for the eggs, which are valuable according to color and rarity. A friend of a friend is convinced they're just a fad which will burn itself out soon enough. But people are very attached to the little critters - they are cute. They look tasty, too.

Creative solutions? Set a limit on how many people can own in a certain space, and make sure your tenants know up front about your rules. Maybe put something in the covenant about it? Or maybe make them put them way high in the sky so their clucking doesn't drive you mad?

Get a tiny chicken avatar.
Tour all your local chicken farms shouting "The Sky is Falling!!!!"

All the chickens will hide.
This will reduce lag.

My father used to say that chickens were just drumsticks on the hoof. (And no he wasn't Colonel Sanders :p)

The solution to the lag is to make them non-physical and phantom.

I think a limit of no more than five physical and non-phantom pets in a region is reasonable. 100? Good god.

I have been considering making my fortune by inventing a game similar to Bloodlines, only based on zombies and voodoo. This will naturally require my adherents to sacrifice lots and lots of chickens.....

buy lots of mainland..then hire a few people from bloodlines to bite these chickens in turn making the chickens zombies..then set them on mainland everywhere..
these chickens will make high bred zombie chickens at a high rate..

So now you can charge people to play the game "Save mainland from zombie chickens from hell" in turn saving SL from future infestation of the deadly chickens..
see things really do happen for a reason.

hah, and then introduce dogs to chase off the foxes, then farmers to shoot dogs that wander off and dig holes and fencing systems to contain the dogs, and auto-booters to keep your landlord from evicting you for lagging the place, and....

I don't think we'll need to go that far. Once the foxes have got the chicken population under control, we can introduce fox hunting in season. Two or three packs of fox hounds should do be enough - and think what fun we could have galloping all over the grid.

It might be a good idea for some landlords to make the creator aware of this, maybe the creator can add in some kind of a breeding limit. It's not in the creator's interest to have his/her customers evicted or banned, so s/he will probably be interested in finding a solution.

He tried but he can't. I spoke with Linden about this and they state, if you don't want the lag from the Sion chickens don't allow them. Only allow these lag creators if you really want them. The current Second Life architecture doesn't allow usage of moving objects in this way. Each chicken gives you the lag of a moving pet, of course nobody has 1 chicken, they want a bunch of them which is their good right. These chickens communicate with their food, each other, their eggs, revival kits, special boxes and so on. Combine this all together in a hen house and you have a huge lag source made out of scripts and top colliders.

Nothing wrong with people wanting to have them or the creator trying to come up with this system. But when you consider everything you have to conclude that Second Life isn't really able to run something like this.

However the creator could do a lot about the collisions if he came up with decent chichens made out of sculpted prims that don't have all these moving parts, this could reduce the lag in a significant way. Also the system with the eggs could be changed as the spawned eggs also collide and create lag in their own way. So the creator could take several steps to reduce lag.

At the moment the chickens create lag, after a while they stop working because they detect to much lag on the sim. The creator could scan the sim for Sion chickens and only allow 6 or 10 of them per island.

Sure he can. He can make then phantom and non-physical.

A 100 limit seems ridiculously high. I shudder to think how many chickens/chicks people were spawning before the limit was imposed. It amazes me how inconsiderate and self-centered some people can be about using sim resources and illustrates a downside to owning mainland.

Maybe land cutters will start a new fad and put a bunch of chickens on their parcel in an effort to induce other land owners on the sim to sell their land. :p

We have a few of these on some of our estate sims. Sure you can see big numbers in the top colliders window or whatever but I can't say I've ever found the sims they are in to be especially laggy.

I suppose if you have 100 of anything (except maybe plywood cubes) you're going to get a lot of lag though.
