Sorry if anyone considers this spam or a stupid question, but how do I enable glow, alot of my builds have glow, and everyone says SL looks better with it, but I can't figure out how to even turn it on. Any help would be appreciated.

Just right click on your object and edit it. In the build window go to the texture tab and there is a glow field where you can set it from 0 to 100. 0 is off and 100 is unbearable.

I think he/she means turn it on as in see it, not how to put it on something

I don't recall there being an option to enable glow, I am sure someone will know though

I personally think objects, especially entire buildings, look awful with glow. All it does is cause your build to remain lit up even at night. I have a couple of these near me and nothing ruins a beautiful view at night like a house that looks like a light bulb :( It's the building equivalent of a face light.

Turn on 'basic shaders' in your graphics preferences?

I like glow used in places where it makes sense, lights, or "neon" lights, stuff like that

but a whole building, why would anyone do that?

because they don't have glow turned on and just don't know what it looks like probably.

to see glow in SL you need a good graphics card and have 'graphics' in 'preferences' turned to or high or ultra to see it.

you can check the 'custom' box and tweak other stuff at those settings too.

Burning Life this year was awash with 'glow'. Full glow can look bad from a distance- some exhibits looked like they were burning magnesium from a distance but were nicer when closer to.

Glow also shows through alpha textures. There is a glowy thing on an ad lot near my home and it shines through one of my walls.

Glow also looks dreadful until the glowing texture fully loads. (I'm on the world's worst network connection these days, so I get to watch all this in super-slo-mo.)

Yeah, I too think it's "Basic Shaders" that turns Glow on these days; I seem to recall a separate checkbox, back when Glow was fresh.

Would choosing Nearby Local Lights in the Custom part of Graphics help?

In release versions, glow was a debug setting, too. RenderGlow.

I like glow - when used sparingly and appropriately. Right now it is new, and everyone is overusing it like crazy.

Please don't abuse the glow!! There are glow-deprived children in <country>!! Don't use more than you have to!!

BL had about 50% more glow than was healthy for it, IMO. NPIRL was even worse.

Dunno if it's my graphics settings or monitor settings or what but most glowy things show up as totally washed out on my screen, even after they've fully rezzed. Nothin' but pure white.

Well okay, I wouldn't go that far...

Is that glow, or full bright? I don't think I've ever seen a building with glow on.

Careful, if you turn that on now... then everying with fullbright or glow will be glowing at 100% all the time.

i had a floor with glow on it, and it had been like that for months until someone kindly informed me. i had no idea.

glow has been so overused, that i now have my settings low enough to now allow it to show for me.

When I first started building, I used Light and sometimes Full Bright... I have had a lot to clean up after I found out I had a setting not turned on (Local Lights in the advanced menu-graphics) *chagrin*

Just got in world and tested what renders glow

it is the basic shaders as bree suggested

local lights have no effect, I keep local lights turned off for the most part, and glow still shows, however when I turn off basic shaders the glow goes away

Yep.. Glow and lights are different things. Lights themselves don't have to be seen - they just add light to other things around them.

Glow adds light to the object itself. Frequently far too much light, IMO.

Glow isn't so much a "light" property as it is a full-bright & alpha-bloom wrapper over the prim that's glowing. That's something that can be indirectly affected by light, but the Full Bright property creates a surface that completely unaffected by the light/dark conditions around it. (^_^)

And.. Yeah.. With Windlight, builders have been given "knobs that go to 12"... So with light and glow it is possible to go way too far. But, I think that's a small price to pay for the overhead we're allowed in creating new content. Now, it's up to us to make it look nice. (^_^)y

Let me ask a Glow question... above it was said you needed a high end card to display it.. I can see nearby lights - I can run Ultra - I don't because the lag is awful, but I can when I choose to. However, to test this glow (which I had never used apparently-had used light and full bright only before-) I rezzed a cube did not apply texture but turned on glow--- nothing happened. Full bright worked fine- is glow a property that only displays when a texture of some sort is "applied" or is plywood a texture on its own and this machine will simply not render it at all?

Seen this? http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Glow_Rendering_FAQ

edit: I think it's a bit dated on how to enable it but the info's still in there. Somewhere.
