Oh dear, what a shame. I wonder how many others will have the same situation.

Meh...I would say I would take $1L off your hands but the asset servers are so borked that it'd probably never transfer...

You do not NEED to upgrade to new viewer as of yet. Plus there are the other viewers out there that can be used. Don't leave so quick before you check all of that out!

Just because the viewer throws you a random dialog doesn't mean what it says is actually true.
If SL ran fine for you up until the WindLight viewer then it's probably just a matter of adjusting the preferences and/or a driver issue... It can be quite a bit slower at the same settings, but if you're willing to accept lower settings you should be able to get it to the same FPS you had before.
(When you open SL, at the log-on screen go to Help / About Second Life... click in the top part of the window that opens... use Ctrl-A to select all text, Ctrl-C to copy it and then Ctrl-V to paste it back into a forum post... Specifics of your puter and/or video card will help to allow people to give specific suggestions)

I'm sorry Cleo that things have gotten so crappy for you. I'm afraid when Windlight becomes the mandatory, this will force a lot of players out. I know that my laptop is pretty new and capable of rendering the world fine for me at the moment, but Windlight looks like crap on it and my game slows to a crawl. With the recent problems and transfer issues that seem to have become the norm around here, I've started searching for other things to pacify my 3d interest. With that I offer this link. Alternatives to Second Life. Just one of the best things I've found that sums up the alternatives. http://slgames.wordpress.com/2007/04/12/alternatives-to-second-life-uber-edition/

Cleo, you could run an older version of SLwith the Nicholaz viewer, as it doesn't require the update. Nicholaz BE-v still works with SL viewer 1.18.5.3.

From: MoxZ Mokeev Windlight looks like crap on it and my game slows to a crawl. What video card is in the laptop? For certain video cards (old and not so old), LL decided to cripple the experience by doing away with shader support altogether (no ripple water, no glow, etc) unless they opt-in to atmospheric shaders (which is worse than a crawl). Despite all the fanticism, the only thing you miss out on with atmospheric shaders off is fluffy clouds and only subtlely different lighting, new water and reflections aren't actually part of WindLight, you get those either way.

Lots of players will have to leave because of this. What you need to do is get together and complain about this not that it will probably make a difference. They dont care long as they install a bunch of new bells and whistles.

(The 1.18.x series won't be able to connect to the grid sometime very soon though so the top 1.19.0 one would be the best to go with)

I'll be on the train out with you probably as well. When the Nicholaz Viewer stops working I'm done too. I spent a day with the Windlight Viewer a few weeks ago, tinkered with it, but I can't get a useable compromise out of it. I'll let you know when my stuff is available.

I have pretty much close to minimum or almost what is required to play and I have been using most recent mandatory update 1.19.05 i think..... I have 2533mhz AOL security edition Systemax that I added memory to so I got 768 ram and Nvidea Geoforce 6200 series video card. I don't or can't afford to upgrade, etc. but someone mentioned birthday present to me in future ...but we will see. I feel your pain, found some ways to get sometimes 20 fps if I am in empty sim up at 600m with very little scripts, fancy prim hair, clothes, etc but often I struggle between 3 in busy high lag sims to 10. But I am not ready to throw in towel. Yet it bugs me that there seems to be this never ending to pay for newer technology with certain things sometimes.

I built my machine a few years ago at the time it was hot rod top of the line at the time. spent a lot of money on it. i think i built it around 2003. over time i've maxed out the spec's. like at first it was the processor was 2500 amd, of course over clocked. with almost five years of use i think i got my moneys worth.
It is a gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro2 mother board, 3200 AMD Athlon xp (barton) over clocked, Volcano 7 copper heat sink, artic silver thermal grease, aluminum mid tower, 3 gigs of Corsair DDR400 ram, Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card. creative labs gigaworks s750 7.1 speakers, Nvidia GeForce 6800 512MB (I forget which model), 21" flat screen crt monitor, hard wired to a netgear router to roadrunner cable at 100mbps, windows xp pro service pack 2.
i've pushed this system as far as it can go. to upgrade again i'll need to build a complete new one. which i want to do but can not afford at the moment.
funny thing is i can play oblivion, EQ2 and LoTR's on line no problem even with a few hundred other players in the zone. last time i played lord of the rings on line i was in ettenmoors with over 50 creeps and freeps fighting it out with all kinds of visual effects going off with out lag or frame rate drops.

SL doesn't like Intel cards, even when it's not a laptop so you're probably out of luck if Windlight makes that worse rather than better . You could always try to post in the Technical Issues forum... I've seen some suggestions there for Intel integrated 'cards'... those seemed to imply that it should be possible to make it tolerable at least, if somewhat crash prone... From: Cleowolf Merryman Nvidia GeForce 6800 512MB I had/have a puter with a FX5200 and even though turning on atmospheric shaders is plain unbearable, with atmospheric shaders off and basic shaders turned on it manages a 10-15fps for most places I go to (which to be fair generally aren't that crowded, nor complex) with low, if realistic settings. Did you try with atmospheric shaders turned off? It would seem odd that you'd have a better card than the one puter I have and end up with such a worse experience?
