In case my lighthearted "Mud Wrestling Goddesses" post didn't make it clear, let me hammer my point home...
What we're selling in SL is imagination and creativity. My build at Lebettu sells a dream...living in the Greek islands. Desmond's Caledon goes that one better. He created an overall framework, Victorian era Steampunk, and left room for others to grab that idea and run with it, using their own imaginations. Fashion designers (like RL designers) sell a dream..."look fab in this outfit". Even land flippers are selling a dream, "own your own little piece of paradise". Even the Business in a Box resellers..."get rich quick in SL".
And we're selling entertainment. Music, fun, a fabulous setting to experience with your friends.
Look around and let your imagination free. If you dream good, others will want a piece of it.

From: Ghosty Kips My RL skills would include being a writer with a few years of blogging and ad copy work under my belt, and I have some digital art skill as well. My hobby interests fall into areas like cosmology, philosophy and religious history - not very usefuil IW for making cash. I'm taking up scripting and building, but it may be a while before I can earn money with that.
I have nothing against retail, but what could I do that works, and how would I go about it? I have some similarities in my background and my in world work is teaching. Not all classes in SL are about building. I teach one on avatar personalization including a bit of the psychology behind it. If you look under Events -> Education and scan the types of classes being taught, something might give you some ideas of a class you could put together. You could then contact some of the SL schools (^ASL^, TUi, SLIP, NCI, etc.) and see if they would be interested in your class. You could also hold one yourself and advertise it in events but would need a place to have the class.

I am constantly making things but I am perfectionist and I have found getting into business of selling content difficult at best. When I joined with avatar there was a lot of beginner newbie jobs before you decided if you wanted to buy lots of lindens dollars, but they are harder and harder to find.

The other thing to consider is what you are doing going to bring steady income or be here and there. Services like being a writer unless you are payed for an ongoing project will be here and there, so don't rush into spending your L$, same goes for retail or tips only jobs.

From: ConductorX Nieuport I am looking for some one to show my apartments / shops to potential clients. I have a nearby sandbox where you can practice building and scripting. It doesn't pay bunches of money but it is honest work. I'm probably not your man, I work 8-10 hour days. BUT, I do have a friend who is looking for work, and since she's cute she might sell more apartments than I do. Let me know what you're willing to pay and I'll pass along the info. edit: private message me, I just turned it on. *looks all newbish*

New Citizens Inc. has several classes to help with any and all SL skills, not to mention they host events where you may win $L. That's how I got half of my money!! Plus you can meet a wide range of people (warning some us are crazy).

From: Mortus Allen ...Also you can try Hoppy Pay while slow you also make L$ while exploring for every new place you go, I think the actual pay out per parcel is dependent on traffic, if you are interested in Hoppy Pay IM me in world and I will see if I have a hud do give you or will give you a landmark to where you can get one. Yeah Camping should be OBSOLETE, when stuff like Hoppy Pay exists. Hoppy Pay is a LOT faster than camping. All you do is wear the HUD, and TP around the Grid. I always refer newbies to Hoppy Pay if they ask about campin spots, because it's more than 4 times as fast as most camping spots ever have been, and you get to explore the Grid. Other than that, building and scripting are your friends. if you can do art at all, the SL art community is extremely supportive of each other, and art collectors in-world seem 2 be made of money. The great thing about building, making clothes, and scripting is...you make the item once, but can resell it "forever" (well, until it's obsolete).

I checked out Hoppy Pay on SLX. It has one positive review, one neutral review, and seven negative reviews. The negatives complain that it breaks before getting to the "pay me" level (L$10).
Unless you can tell me they've fixed it (and I don't see anything about an update in the SLX listing) I'd have to say there's a reason that everybody is still sitting in camp chairs...

Both are little forms of income, hoppy pay is ok no bugs I received sometimes 15, 18, 20s L$... peanuts that I mainly use to buy demos with my alt lolol camp chairs are better if you stay like an all night on it... If you want to get real money you better work as extremely good builder, very creative clothe designer, landlord, scripter, dancer or host on a good club, striper or escort... other than that try some club contests

Making "real money" isn't my point (although it probably is for the OP...you still there?) I have a rental community for that (now at 74% occupancy, hurray!!) I was interested in Hoppy Pay as something to hand out to newbies who ask "how can I make money here?" But not if it's an unreliable gadget. Sigh. I suppose I will have to get one and test it myself.

It all depends of what are your needs, you probably should start this thread telling us what is the minimum amount for you... because for me the minimum for cover weekly costs are 1500 to pay some rents... that's why I said I only used hoppy pay as fun or in the case of chairs to camp during night...

Tried it on an alt, the problem is in some sims you have to fly up to 100m for the scripts to run... it's as if they want to avoid paying If you encounter a client that turns off scripts and flight... send a msg to the hoppy pay HQ about them trying to prevent payouts by making it impossible to use the hud
