Being new to SL, I can easily see I'd rather be making my Lindens IW than buying them at the exchange.

I don't want to get into the land thing (yet) becuase I'm too new and have tons to learn before possibly getting burnt for RL cash. And things like camping are out of the question (nor will I pimp out an alt 'escort', strip in a bar, and so forth).

My RL skills would include being a writer with a few years of blogging and ad copy work under my belt, and I have some digital art skill as well. My hobby interests fall into areas like cosmology, philosophy and religious history - not very usefuil IW for making cash. I'm taking up scripting and building, but it may be a while before I can earn money with that.

I have nothing against retail, but what could I do that works, and how would I go about it?

An alternative to retail would be an in world job.

Try -

Modeling - you might get some free clothes and all you're required to do is stand posed in a store and greet and direct customers as they come in.

Hosting - There are in world multi-player games that need hosts. Clubs needing host...

Textures - If you have some digital art skills, there is always room in world for more unique hand drawn textures. (Just be sure that you watermark them to keep them from getting stole by texture thieves).

There are some no strip dancing jobs to.

Camping and Money Tree farming are usually what I do suggest out of the gate till you find your Niche in world. Personally I prefer Money Tree Farming. Also you can try Hoppy Pay while slow you also make L$ while exploring for every new place you go, I think the actual pay out per parcel is dependent on traffic, if you are interested in Hoppy Pay IM me in world and I will see if I have a hud do give you or will give you a landmark to where you can get one.

There are no get rich quick jobs unfortunately, anything with high rates of pay either require a lot of hard work, sex, or some other downside. Some jobs start low, tips only and only give decent pay if you are really good at what you do.

Keep in mind that many things in SL pay very poorly when compared to RL. You may be better off seeking some RL freelance writing work and using the earnings to buy Lindens on the exchange than trying to earn that money in world.

Digital art suggests you'd be more suited to clothing design, or you may well be able to create your own pictures and sell them inworld. Making textures maybe, or even skins, eyes?

This is very true. Trying to be self sufficient in SL is extraordinarily difficult, my SL partner DJ and rents up to 4 cabins, and even then she has to work quite hard to make tier and membership in a month, let lone make walking around money on top of it.

Good ideas, these. I might consider the clothing angle ... and perhaps I'll take on an alt to do some of the other stuff, like hoppy pay etc.

It's not that I can't afford to buy lindens at the exchange though, I have a decent job and could do it regularly. I'd like my in-game persona be be a bit more self-sufficient, though.

How would I get started in the clothing gig? That sounds like something I might actually be able to do ... but where would I sell, and how?

Honesly if you don't just visit the same places all the time I would even put Hoppy Pay on your main. Tested it on my alt, it's safe and have huds for both my alt and my main.

There are some good starting tutorials here:

You'll have to copy and paste the link into your browser because funky features like automatic links are disabled here :(

heyas;

there is a writing 'contest' publication thing that goes on.... um, or did. there are writer and library groups where you may be able to put your talents to use. if you can teach, you can hold classes -- even free ones garner nice tips. though most classes are for building and/or scripting; things directly useful within sl. but i do see a lot more 'real world' type classes in the listings these days.

also keep in mind that there are several sl magazine publications. i know nothing about their payscale, but i do know metaverse messenger is a ('the'?) big name and they sell ad space and have a huge circulation.

i make a lot of money with games. most are building games (primtionary, building shelter, speed build, vaa haiku build, and my own sketchpad game). if you don't build, but are 'intelligencia,' you can try various trivia games.

also check out the 'beyond imagination' group. this month they are running a huge and very impressive murder mystery type game that requires a LOT of thinking and deciphering of clues. they only had cash prizes for the first to solve it, but they offer other prizes, plus mini-games. and they are planning more to come.

nessie hunt is another big game, with a 1k payout for top score of the month. although your score is more or less dependant on random elements in this game.

if you can toss together some costumes on themes, you can try the various clubs that have theme-costume contests. (best in red, best in black, best in lingerie, best in jeans, best in wings, etc). even with freebies, i've won a few of those in my time.

lastly (in my repertoire, at least) is first opinions panel -- search for them in groups. this is a legitimate company that finds people to do surveys (REAL surveys, not the 'do you not want us to send you 500 free samples of diapers?' email-harvesting surveys). these pay various amounts.

oh... if you are learning building and putting some things together, there are show & tell events where you can win cash prizes. if you are under 90 days old, i recommend the nci 'newbie' show & tells.

check the events schedule, especially the games/contests category.

Writer, philosopher, religious historian...

I suggest you start your own religion. You have all the qualifications.

The only other guy I know who's a possible competitor is Trout, and he only wears the collar part time, and for yocks.

You might think I'm joking, but I'm dead serious. If you make your religion funny and interesting, you could attract a lot of people. People = donations = money in the bank.

That's OK. hahah ... and I don't think we should carry this further. I have nothing against people who like organized religion, and my poke was purly in jest.

Besides, it's not really something I'd want to get paid for, and I don't talk about my beliefs unless someone asks anyway. I'd rather deal in commerce. :)

I've had good luck after learning the building tools. I do what I can to show off the things I make and sometimes I'll get offers to buy what I have or to pay me to make something new. (^_^)

My best week was over L$1000 so far. (^_^)

Plus I'm usually on L$200 a week for building and show&tell contests. (^_^)y

Camping, escorting?

Gor Blimey! Preposterous. No need, no need!

Talk to Sir JJ Drinkwater (Librarian of Caledon, Knight of the Realm, Order of Distinguished Service in all things Literary) and see what he has to recommend.

Perhaps the Caledon Library doesn't have something itself (I don't know what the needs are these days) but there are all sorts of ancillary functions and things needing done: presentations, readings, whatnot.

Worst comes to worst, you could always take up in the Colonies. Things are a bit primitive out there, but not much need for money. Just keep a weather eye on the volcano, and the witch doctor.

Oh, darn...a man with morals. Well, that'll certainly get in the way. Just to be clear, I wasn't suggesting you promote YOUR beliefs. I was suggesting you make something up. The Cult of the Plywood Chicken. The Divine Prim. Philippites. The Booted Goddess (I know someone who'll make a great avatar for that one).

And the point isn't belief anyway. It's entertainment. You're selling your creativity, your time, and a Concept. A way for people to get together, be part of some zany group, laugh, clap, and have fun.

Sheesh. Some people...you tell 'em to start a religion, and they suddenly think you're talking about God or something.

[EDIT] Check out Desmond's suggestion. Caledon is so civilized that even its colonies are Nice Places. And they are serious about things like libraries.

Ghosty,

I am looking for some one to show my apartments / shops to potential clients. I have a nearby sandbox where you can practice building and scripting. It doesn't pay bunches of money but it is honest work.

I was contacted today about an apartment and I can't show them until later tonight.

If you are interested contact me.
