i haven't used it, probably never will due to the fact it looks like some outside company not related to the hosters of second life having access to my SL $. I don't even see anything on the site saying how you pay. I'm guessing you would give it lindens under your account from an in game terminal? Thing is i see it selling out of game items like software. I suppose they use the linden as real world $ to in that case?

You are wise to be cautious, but Slexchange has an excellent reputation and is widely used both for shopping, and buying and selling L$'s.
Just my opnion of course.

I've used SLX hundreds of times and never had a problem. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

They are an outside company, and they are extremely trusted. You can put money into an account at in-game terminals or with a credit card on their website. They run a linden/US$ exchange, so you can effectively use your lindens to buy real world things if they're offered, but technically the lindens would be converted first.

I have used both on-rez and SLX and have not had any problems in either case. I trust the website more than I trust the merchants on the other end for the most part. YMMV
I did buy AVPainter which is software used for clothing editing; not an in game product. In that instance, you can download the program from the author's site. Buying the product from SLX, I paid L$ from my account to his and recieved an object that gave the product key code needed to regester the program. Actually, I think I could have l went to his store and bought it in game (not sure in this case but it is common with most vendors).

SLExchange is completely trustworthy. They are set up legally. All monies are held in escrow, and they use the LL Risk API on all transactions.

I can heartily recommend SLX (don't have experience with On-Rezz). The only access to your L$ they have is whatever you grant. You add or withdraw funds at SLX terminals located around SL and on their island (use Search). They are very conscientious and they are very good at customer and merchant support (unlike certain outfits I could name O.O). They had a recent flap with a merchant that proved to be the result of product-griefers trying to game their efforts to do the right thing. Which tells you they are so consistent about doing the right thing by customers and merchants it is worthwhile to scumbags to try to game them. (And the scumbags have failed.)
Use SLX with confidence.

*grins* Keep in mind that SLExchange uses the same RISK API system that Linden Labs uses and frankly, has much better customer service. Yeah, I've been using the SLEx for at least two years now and would highly recommend it to a person wishing to buy or sale. Firstly: You deposit money via the SLExchange ATM (I'd rather call it a Store Credit System, thanks to the bank ban ) and then you go to the website and look up the things you'd like to purchase. When you find something, you purchase it and it's sent in world to you.

I keep my Linden balance in SLX and only transfer funds as needed to my avatar (which you can do in one click from the SLX website, you don't need to use an inworld ATM for that).
I do this because I think the database for SLX is much more straightforward, much more of a solved problem, than SL's asset server. Also, should I ever make a mistake and give debit permissions to an unscrupulous inworld object, I would not lose much.
I also buy all my Lindens on their exchange ... again, simple exchanges like this are a solved problem, from an applications stability viewpoint.
I have used their support team twice for questions, and both times got a swift answer, even though I certainly am a customer of vanishingly small importance to them. .

I personally think Apotheus is waaaay too smart to let SLExchange be anything but trustworthy. It wouldn't pay the bills otherwise.
But anything can happen in an 'economy' like SL's, and there are things out there that could happen that are far outside anyone's control.

how did that ever get implemented with a straight face? I could see 1 time allowing it but something having automatic debit functionality when it wants has to be a huge flaw.

wow... so i take it they didn't even put in a place in the UI to see a list of items that have some form of perm permissions like this?
what does the popup say when someone wants anytime debit permission and not just 1 time payment permission?

SLExchange is completely trustworthy in terms of payments, that's not to say the merchants are extremely trustworthy but they are the same merchants you find inworld. So if they rip people off via SLExchange, they're likely to be ripping people off inworld too.
SLExchange is a very good site.

what does the popup say when someone wants anytime debit permission and not just 1 time payment permission? It says: Congratulations! You have just been screwed! (Just kidding, but it would be more truthful if it did.)

It's pretty conspicuous. Instead of a blue message box you get a yellow one. The box also warns you to be suspicious if you don't trust the source or its creator and generally to be cautious. It still doesn't stop some people from clicking on it when they wear or click on some random prim object given to them by a total stranger for some reason.

if you see something you want, you can likely just go to that persons inworld shop and buy it there. or, only add into it the amount you intend to spend at that moment. you have to be inworld anyway to receive your product (lest it be lost or returned to the vendor), so that shouldn't be a problem either way.

slexchange rocks. Only problem is I have now started browsing items there and not in SL... so I'm probably missing a lot of goodies not listed on their web site.

While I am an extreme skeptic, and have steadfastly encouraged people away from banks and stock exchanges (and rightfully so, as it turns out), SLX is a trustworthy company with a professional staff. I trust it as much as Linden Labs.

Their Pips or Peps confuse me. That is why I have never bought lindens from them.

I am always cautious about external (off grid) services BUT SL Exchange is okay and I have used them without issues in the past. I think Anshe Chung has a 1/3rd financial interest in the business.
However I would also say that if I was in the current market for virtual goods and services I would not object to keeping a few thousand lindens with them for ease of service, but if my account was holding lots of lindens I would create an alt to hold them. That would solve the problem of so called debit scripts without having to totally trust an off world third party source

I would like to see SLX institute some rules on what is allowed to be sold on their site i.e. that what is being sold is actually the creation of the seller or if not then some method to ensure that the seller has the express permission of the creator to sell it. That would go along way towards decreasing the promulgation of these business in a box scams.
Other than that I think they are excellent, once you become a trusted user you can relay your money through them very quickly without any percent charge on the transaction. It used to be 1$ usd per transaction for me but now it has gone down to something nearer to 50 cents. I think this has something to do with the pips, not quite sure, I never looked that closely into that aspect. I can now get my money to paypal within a few minutes, and if you have either the paypal debit or credit card there is no charge from paypal, unless you withdraw from an atm, and charges vary on those.
