The Wii has an IBM PowerPC CPU and an AMD/ATI GPU, so it's certainly possible. One prominent Linden once told me that he could compile a version of SL that would run on a cell phone, so anything's possible.

P2 Phoenix, stop spreading rumors...we all know the innards of the Wii are from the SNES! Actually, it's 'supposedly' as powerful as the original Xbox. It could be ported, but it would have to be dumbed down. Also, I'm betting a cell phone version would be one ugly stepchild. Stick to PC...if consoles want their own version of SL...create something similar to Sony's 'HOME.' Only bad thing about HOME however, is the users have much less control over asset creation. It sure does look pretty though...and the physics and lighting engines are fantastic. HOME is what SL will look like in 5 years. _____________________

P2 No wonder its so buggy on the PC , weve got Lindens fantasizing about Cell Phone Pixel bumping instead of working. ![]() |

I don't think it could be possible to get it released - most console games have to have their content all inspected and approved before they can be released.
Because of SL's continuously changing content, that wouldn't be possible, so it'd be nearly impossible to get it approved. If it was released for the Wii, it'd have to be the Teen Grid (or Combined Grid?) version, because that's closer to the target market.. |

Brenda, the Wii is the one with the skanky white trash girl being compared to the fat dumpy girl in a spoof of the Apple/Microsoft commercials.

If you really wanted to you can install a video card into your PC that will output to your television and then you can connect a wiimote to your PC.
I doubt you can get SL to run on a Wii directly as you have to download all the user-created content every time you get into SL and the Wii doesn't have a hard drive. Maybe you could run something like the AjaxLife client which is just a text only type of connection to SL. _____________________

[giggle]" How international opinions vary. They sell like hot cakes here as all round family entertainment and owning one is considered to be very cool. Not by me personally. It's the one console our household doesn't have - mainly because they are considered 'very cool' by the general public. |

I don't really want to have to aim to grab a manipulator handle. Wii-mote is a step above most motion sensing technology, but it's far from perfect...even with practice it wouldn't be nearly as accurate of efficient as a mouse and keyboard. I can think of a useful function for a wi-mote which would fit in VERY well in SL ... and probably end up creating a whole new wave of attachments of animations! AND new descriptions ... God forbid |

Yumi - you said what I wouldn't want to re submission testing ... I think I love you! I have just seen it recently - I'm active on another board where there was an actual console programmer there, and after he spent a year or so writing a game, it then took something like 8 months to get it approved and a LOT of things had to be changed.. Why didn't you want to say it? I honestly don't think that SL on consoles is something that LL will be working towards. |

I don't have a family to entertain, and am too old to be concerned with being cool. I tend to totally ignore things in life that hold no intrest to me. My nieces and nephews have all sorts of game box thingies, but I really don't pay attention to what they are. They ask for stuff at Christmas but I just give them the money and tell them to buy it for themselves. _____________________

If the games that Nintendo releases for the Wii are generally "family-friendly", does that necessarily mean that SL wouldn't be possible? I don't usually engage in sexual or violent activities on SL, although I don't spend my time in PG sims only. When we set up our Wii, it asked us whether we wanted.. what was the phrasing... a "parental filter" or something. Much like how our PS2 made us enter a password every time we put in an R-rated movie. Obviously that's not the most impermeable thing to keep kids away from- O NOZ!- the peril of virtual nudity, but that implies to me that Nintendo does not intend for *only* G-rated material to be available on the Wii. It's still a new system; I'm curious to see what is in store for the future.
I can't exactly afford a brand new, fit-for-gaming PC, and SL runs at a slideshow framerate on my G4 iMac. Maybe that skews my perception into believing video games just don't belong on home computers. Should I just play FFXI on the Playstation instead, if I'm really pining for an interactive world on a console rather than my home computer? I mean... I'm not really a competitive, player-vs.-player-game person. I just want to wander around a pretty landscape and talk to others as a creepy-lookin' beastie. And to anyone wary of the Wii's controller- don't knock it before you try it. And you can always hook up a keyboard or use other styles of controllers! Of course, blah blah, maybe the XBox is a better platform for SL than the Wii. But I don't *have* an XBox... ;P |
