lol, I never get far enough along to fail... I will come up with an idea, try to learn to use another program for it...like making sculpties, or texturing, or animating, pick up the basics, then I can't be bothered with it any more lol. It never really come to the point where I can do anything with it. Friends start businesses, I help them set it up, do a bit of organisation, or teach them how to sort it so it will work a bit better, then all of a sudden I have nothing to do lol. I'll make something, or someone will spot something I can do, they suggest using it to make money, but I end up either scared, or unsure about setting it up and trying it.
Of course, along with having no real decent fail stories, I have no success stories. I think I'd rather have a good fail than nothing at all.

From: Elanthius Flagstaff This is a great thread, here's some of my most spectacular failure.
L$400,000 for 32sqm fail there's not much to the story but way back when I was at the height of my smugness some smart arse came up with a way to change land prices very very rapidly. I woke up one morning to discover all my bots had been drained of cash. When I checked what was going on I discovered we'd bought two separate 16sqm parcels for L$200,000 each. I pretty quickly found a way to avoid being ripped off and proceeded to win future parcels from this scammer for the cheap price the next 30 or 40 times. I think I managed to eventually get my costs down to about L$500/sqm or so. I submitted tickets to LL but I never saw that L$400k again.
Bought the same parcel 100 times A fair while back SL would go through little phases where a parcel would stay for sale even after you paid for it. Even after you paid for it dozens of times. The first time I paid for a parcel Guy Linden berated me for trying to buy the same parcel more than once. The second time it happened due to various glitches in mine and SLs software my bots paid for that same "cheap" parcel about 100 times until I finally ran out of money. The Lindens were definitely not amused.
Set all my land for sale for L$1/sqm I have this bot that runs around setting all the prices on my parcels. Not sure what happened but one day I accidentally set the price wrong and it whizzed around merrily dumping all my land for a tenth of it's value. I have no idea how much I lost before I noticed but it was 10s of thousands of sqms. Now those are spectacular failures

Fairly early on I decided I wanted to have a club, and that I could BUILD IT MYSELF!!
I built something....I'm still not sure what it was, but it never became a club.
I decided to open a garden shop, but all my uploaded trees had halos and I couldn't figure it out. It was open for a while, never sold anything tho.

so.... what happened to the tulips? don't get me started on fail stories, probably if i could stick to something for long enough not to get distracted by a shiney object i might be able to make a success of myself in SL. as it is now tho my middle name is FAIL -Crunch

Trying to copy a picture frame texture onto a frame mounted on the wall using the eyedropper, only to discover I did not have Select Texture checked and I really had the entire linked house of no copy textures selected. Game over . . .

No tulips! I dun have any! Shoo! Go away! All Gone! From: Elanthius Flagstaff L$400,000 for 32sqm fail Whoa. Elanthius winning the thread so far, I think. As they say in my native homeland of California: "Duuuuude!!!!" From: Weston Graves Trying to copy a picture frame texture onto a frame mounted on the wall using the eyedropper, only to discover I did not have Select Texture checked and I really had the entire linked house of no copy textures selected. Game over . . . Maybe not financially catastrophic, but this *definitely* deserves an honourable mention.

About 2 years ago, attemting to chop a 1024 from my 16,000 mtr land, going under the shop and camming under the floor. Then getting confident with the good old mouse and cam abandoned my land, with my newley sorted boxes of inventory and nice shop and stock all getting auto returned and me on the floor hitting myself in the face with anger.
Luckily mr govenor linden gave me my land back 3 days later on the mainland, and i was careful from then on with the land tools....
I always said the abandon land button was in a bad place......

I spent six weeks making a photo sourced skin. I put it in my shop and sold one within 5 hours. Never sold another one, though I had plenty of demo takers. Over the weeks and months I had to face how flawed it was, especially the seams. And how different it was from the airbrushed Vargas style skins that are popular. But it has a beautiful face and I still wear it myself.
I made a bush baby avatar that sold maybe 5 or 6 copies. I used to wear it myself. Reactions ran the gamut from "Cool" to "scary", "creepy" and "ghastly".
I've seen tv documentaries on MacDonalds, the founder of the hamburger franchise and Hershey of Hershey chocolate. They each had two or three businesses that went bankrupt before they succeeded.
There is no failure, there is only feedback.

make objects interact with a website and do neat stuff system was great, coding while learning and no general idea about business Worked great tho, made some stuff that sold 3 times to have RL yank me back to neglect everything to a point i lost my server it was all running on so when i returned, i had no server, no working scripts and a "dept" with who were using the system, great! back to work... and return the funds plus compensation next failure in the working, tho it can`t be a real failure as i`m doing it more for fun got a dedicated server and going to offer everything i have and make for free (perhaps here and there some cheap addons) what ever keeps you busy while doing what you like i`d say

I started a group that quickly had members from all over the world and from different time zones. This was about the same time Indiana decided to go Daylight Savings Time. The whole concept of “Spring Forward and Fall Back” was alien to me. I was notorious for showing up an hour late for the group meetings I scheduled. Sometimes even three hours late because I would put down my time zone for my meetings and everyone else assumed I meant SL time. Group Meetings….. complete failure

Setting auto-return and having my whole store, two friend's builds and my house all returned to me. And the Linden's saying they couldn't roll-back the sim as it was mainland - even though I owned all bar 1024m of it, and the owner of that was perfectly happy to have a roll-back I had to spend literally all ight rebuilding my store - and this is the days before it was all returned in one bit - I had HUNDREDS of blocks called 'object' Thankyou for starting this post, Desmond. It is rather comforting to know that one of the 'bug guys' like yourself has little downs as well as ups.

Building
Got the building bug in my second week, took some classes and thought I knew enough to make stuff... and a friend with some land wanted me to build a stable yard. Built him a lovely carriage house in Victorian style with a clock and everything.. He loved it but could I move it back just a tad?.....
Picked it up and threw it across two sims and buried it in the side of a hill, where it came apart because... I hadn't linked it.
Learned NEVER to move things away from myself, but to turn the camera so it goes across the screen, and to LINK AND SAVE COPY.

My only spectacular failures have been embedded in an amazing sucess--NCI--so it seems almost unfair to count them.
1) I returned an elaborate build covering an entire island where I had estate manager rights while setting autoreturn. The island and build belonged to a client of NCI's (One of the ways we raise money is by running some classes at the locations of corporate clients. These classes are still free to students and open to all.) It was embarrassing, but a rollback fixed it quickly. It never occurred to me that the contents of the island might not be set to group.
2) I brought in "Sex in SL" class to NCI (expertly written and taught by Imogen Saltair). It was amazingly unpopular among many NCI members and officers, and led to a number of resignations. I had no idea that so many people considered NCI to be a refuge from the fairly sexualized culture of Second Life. It was stressful and depressing to deal with the fallout from that class.
Still, I kept the class up until I was blindsided by Linden Lab. LL announced that they were implementing strict adult tagging together with age verification within a matter of weeks. According to the rules they announced, the Sex class would have required NCI Beach to be tagged "adult", and access restricted to people who had age verified. So I had to cancel the class. Of course, LL never actually implemented their new policy, and eventually forgot all about it...

From: Carl Metropolitan ...Of course, LL never actually implemented their new policy, and eventually forgot all about it... Goes without saying, considering how much they relied on the blog to announce policy updates and changes. (=_=) I remember the Role Playing class, but I never had my chance to take it. I was unclear what the class would cover and I doubt showing up in a 4' tall loli avatar would blow over well. (^_^)y

From: Love Hastings You accidentally posted a success story. I see what you did there! It's like how you answer that "what's your greatest flaw" question in interviews. But I do find it useful cause it shows that future success comes from seeds buried in a fail.
