I find this technology and future fiction fascinating.

I highly recommend the movie "eXistenZ" to you all--the movie is about a quasi-futuristic society that has invented a 'video game' that completely embeds the user into the world...wonderful movie directed by Cronenberg and starring Jude Law.

(also see: Lucid Dreaming)

This kind of tech can also be used to potentially craft a personalized dream-sequence for the 'user.' You can plan a vacation before bed, and enjoy a new experience every night. The implications are limitless.

Remember my future-tense society posts last week--we talked about the implications and possible suffering from the abuse of such technology? Imagine if we never wanted to experience the 'real world' because our VR one was much more satisfying all around.

That last sentence is very frightening to me. I do hope I never see such a time. Technology is a wonderful tool, it should be used judiciously, be we have to be careful not to become enslaved by it. As Spock once said "Computers make wonderful servants, but I have no wish to serve under them."

THAT'S IT!!! Dang. That was going to keep me awake at night. I hate it when you have the answer right on the tip of your tongue and you can't make yourself say it. What a terrible movie.

Thanks, Lexxi - that was a real relief.

www.imdb.com is your friend...

@Lexxi

It May have been Foundation - now I don't know.

And while we all are on the Robotics quasi theme - I offer Tanith Lee's Silver Metal Lover.

(snip)I was dangerously addicted a short while ago to the point it was threatening my RL. I strongly believe I am not the only one this has happened to... or will happen to!(snip)

No you're not. I can promise you that. :-)

When I used to use SL a lot I found that I'd dream about it frequently. Very vivid they were too. And I spoke to others who experienced the same.

Made me think: is it possible that SL is SO immersive that the subconscious has difficulty distiguishing between experiences gained in RL and those gained in SL. I mean, we all know how easy it is to lose ourselves for sometimes hours on end and just forget that the real world is there at all.

Of course, the conscious part of our mind knows the difference. But deeper?

I have to admit (if it isn't already blindingly obvious) that this is an area I know pretty much nothing about. It's just a thought that came to me - but if I'm talking total carp, please say so. I won't be offended (much). :-)

I met a talking Bass once, never a Carp. It's name was Billy and it hung on a wall. You'd press a button and it would wiggle its head and tail and sing a couple of really annoying verses.

Yeah I know, a cheap shot at a typo .. but I'm bored!!!!

And serves you right Kelly for not having PM on ;)

I think we can all pretty much agree we wouldn't want to completely replace our first lives with a virtual one. I'm interested in exactly how immesive a second one could potentially be. Right now we have visual and auditory feedback. Both could be improved in terms of sound and graphics quality. Other sensory feedback? Could something be created which would stimulate our other receptors so we could touch, taste and smell? What would the interface look like? I assume something like what's in the OP where we would be able to control our avatars movements through something other than a keyboard.

As much as I would never give up the rewards of my RL, I would try something truly immersive without hesitation just for the experience of doing it, and imagine the benefits to those struggling with handicaps. We've seen a lot of stories about SL being used by people who have mobility problems and the pleasure they get just from being able to interact normally, walking, dancing, etc. Imagine if you could add being able to feel someone touch you, or feeling the wind in your face as you sail a boat.

Makes me wish I had some legitimate life skills. I would work on this.
