Pets do use lots of scripts. Maybe not the best investment with the looming script limitations.

A few people have now mentioned this. Is it known exactly what these limitations are going to be?

That's a pity. Think I have less than 8 prims available to me at the moment. Sigh.

I have a shoulder cat, and I could name it (Mr Darcy) by saying the name in Chat. Was it the same with Eddie?

Yes, naming was the same for both Eddie and for my prior Zooby cat, Airie, saying it in local chat. . Eddie notices everyone who comes into a certain distance of him, and says so. with Airie, the cat, he had his own Friends list. People who came on my land, had to be added to his friends list or he'd attack. FYI, Airie the cat is 38 prims.

As far as I know, there's nothing sure. Already, some estates state in their covenant that "chickens" are not allowed. But that was not just 1 pet, but dozens, whole chicken farms.

TY, Treasure. 38 prims makes that an unlikely one for me at the present time :(

I've never seen chickens in SL. I take it that each chicken would need it's own script?

Yes, I have one: that's what Mr Darcy is.

My favorite dogs are at Virtual Kennel Club. They don't look as realistic as some, and they are expensive. What I like about them is their artificial intelligence. They seem more like a "real" dog.

I second this! I have a Chow from VKC. In addition to the above, there is a real community built around the VKC dogs.

Before I purchased my VKC dog, I looked at several other places and wavered between VKC and Zooby's, but the deciding factor (unless it's changed; I know Zooby's were upgrading their pets to give them something similar to artificial intelligence) was that Zooby's dogs worked off a menu so a bit more limited.

They do have a wide variety of pets, including cats, carry-pettable cats and dogs, "big cats" (lions, tigers, panthers), a cute bunny...a lot to see there.

Side story: My partner and I were looking for a specific place we had been to long ago. I tp'd in first and was dropped into a virtual wasteland where the place had been. I saw a slight drop in the terrain at one point and a big red sign that said something but my slower computer at 64 draw distance didn't rez it in while I was tping my partner over. I apparently was close to the sign, because the tp landed him on the other side of the line and apparently in private property (kind of looked like a dark rp urban type sim) and he was immediately attacked by two dobermans.

They pushed him back to the original sim I tp'd into but kept attacking him with chat text saying they were biting him. He tp'd out and then they turned on ME, even though I had not gone to the "other side."

That was impressive. I didn't get a chance to look at what designer those dogs were as I was being pushed around too much. I'm pretty sure Zooby's dogs have a protection mode and can be set to walk a designated perimeter.

VKC dogs "can" be attack trained - mine is - but it's not a standard feature with the dogs; I just happened to purchase one from someone who had to sell theirs (through VKC) and it was already loaded with more than the basic training. However, the attack modes are not permitted on any of the VKC grounds.

Which is another thing I like about VKC, all their parks have the dogs roaming around, you can play with them and see how you like each breed. That's a great feature except be forewarned, you will probably be swarmed by dogs when you arrive greeting you so if you have a Mysti, turn on Movelock...lol.

ETA: The dogs (at least the VKC ones) do take a lot of prims. A newer build on the dogs has come out since I purchased my Chow; my partner's German Shepherd has a lot less prims. Now that I'm back in a 512 parcel home, I don't have the space to rez her, but that is where the VKC parks come in. They even have racing games and obstacle courses you can teach your VKC dog how to use.

Here's a photo of a day I went shopping in a Japanese sim and took Aiko (my Chow) with me. Anyplace rezzing is permitted you may bring out your VKC dog. Their is a "virtual leash" by setting the parameters of how far away from you the dog can go, as well as sit/stay, which I put her on while in shops.

Yes, I really enjoy my VKC dog!!! ;)
