Zooby's is popular.

My favorite dogs are at Virtual Kennel Club. They don't look as realistic as some, and they are expensive. What I like about them is their artificial intelligence. They seem more like a "real" dog.

Seconded. Their dogs and cats are VERY cute, and will do all sorts of neat things, including, if you have more than one, interact with each other. You can also wear them (on your shoulder or on several other points) and TP with them. They're also a LOT cheaper than some of the other brands. They come with a food bowl and food (which they eat) and a ball to play with. I think they have the best AI of all the pets I've seen in SL.

You keep using that word! I don't think it means what you think it means. ^_^

I second both recommendations. Zooby for the more realistic looking but comparatively dumber dog or VKC for a more sophisticated pet AI.

My RL friend gave me an AIF Corgi when my RL Corgi went off to doggie heaven. It was the best SL present ever and this Corgi is very sweet and lovable. She had me worried because I said I don't want another dog, it was right before Christmas and she had me fooled that for a Christmas present, she was going to give me a puppy :)

Do pets of this sort tend to be high in prims? I fancy having a cat, but there aren't a lot of prims to spare in my room.

I love my VKC dog. They can be put in "passive mode" where they simply follow commands or "active mode" where they try out their initially programmed behaviors and the behaviors you have taught them. Depending on being told "good" or "bad" after each behavior, they learn to do that behavior more or less frequently in that environment. Their programming is kept off site, so if something happens to the dog in SL, the company provides a free replacement that has all the same behavior training, and will do so as many times as necessary. It is the same dog, really, reincarnated in a different body. VKC also has dog parks with trainers and helpers to provide customer service.

As enticing as that sounds, I'll have to pass for now.

Not sure about the others, but the Zooby's do. In fact, one sim where I had land for a long time banned Zooby pets because of their high scripts. They are primmy too, though, yeah. After having my cat in my inventory for awhile, and seeing the animals the others are talking about here, I'll go with them. They interact with you and each other, so cute.

I like hearing "Eddie notices Treasure" when I pass by Eddie, lol. And they have pet anims and roll over and your avi kneels down and plays with them, they roll on their backs, interact with you, very realistic.

That's a pity. Think I have less than 8 prims available to me at the moment. Sigh.

I have a shoulder cat, and I could name it (Mr Darcy) by saying the name in Chat. Was it the same with Eddie?

Pets do use lots of scripts. Maybe not the best investment with the looming script limitations.
