Hey all,
I am a super noob to SL - but I'm about to quit after day 2 if I can't get an answer to why I am unable to buy L$...can only imagine how many others have run into this issue.
For starters - the KB in the support section regarding the purchase of L$ on the SL website is beyond worthless.
Ok, so What I have done is I went to My Account, then hit the link for 'Increase your Credit'. Ok, no problem there it says 25.00 minimum - ok again, no problem. Paid my $25 and I went to the lindex to buy some lindens with the money I just put on. It's far past 24 hours since I put the $25 on my account and yet I am still greeted by this message:
We are unable to complete your request. • This transaction would exceed your monthly billing limit by US$9.7. You have already billed US$25.00 of your monthly billing limit is US$25.00. • Couldn't reserve order. • The system encountered an error while processing your order, please try again.
I read the page to understand the limits and I understand why they are there. My understanding of it was this is a every 24 hours type thing so I waited to see if I could do it today. What can I do to get my money?

From: Amy Riler What can I do to get my money? The short answer is : wait a day or so.. They put limits on how much newbies can buy when they first join up. See the first chart at http://www.secondlife.com/currency/describe-limits.php. Once you're more than 2 days old, you'll be able to buy up to US$100. edit: and welcome to sl!

thanks for the response!
I put the money on the account on Sunday (4/19@10AM EST) it is now Monday (4/20@4:40PM EST) so more than 24 hours have passed. Shouldnt I be able to apply the money I put on the account yesterday, today?

Er.. I dunno.. The chart says 0-1 days old can buy up to US$10 and 2-7 days old can buy up to US$100. Not sure where 1-2 days old fits in. I'd give it one more day.. /me remembers this from when she was new and remembers it sucking. It'll be over pretty quick, tho.

I might be wrong as it's been a while, but I think the first month you are on Second Life, I think you are limited to $25 worth of total Lindens. Try buying $15.30 and see what happens, since you are $9.70 over with your $25 transaction. I'm here just under two years, and remember sending a support ticket after a few days, asking to have my limit raised. I put my charge card on file and age verified (I'm the only person on SL that this worked for, haha), and they raised my limit way up. It was fast too ... Lindens are always fast when you have money out.

The time starts when you make your first transaction, not when you join, that that might be affecting this. Wait a bit - explore, check out the freebie sites, meet people. There's plenty of time to spend money in the future, but no money is necessary to enjoy SL, really.

Viciously,
this is the part I am most concerned with now that you have posted... This transaction would exceed your monthly billing limit by US$9.7. You have already billed US$25.00 of your monthly billing limit is US$25.00.
Does this mean I have just wasted my first month and am not able to make any more transactions (including buying L$ or putting more credit on, or anything really) for 30 days?
If so, I'm gone...not waiting around for 30 days to be able to play a game I have already paid for - Linden Labs can keep my $25.00 and I'll just chalk it up to a lesson learned...Linden Labs should really make this more clear or change the way they handle the lindex, or at least make the website with useful info. this is not a good first impression for a noob =(

Patience, Amy. But if you just can't put off buying that new dress another day, then open an account at XStreetSL ( http://www.xstreetsl.com). Then go to your PayPal account and transfer money to yourself at XStreet. Then buy your $L there and transfer them to your avatar's account in world.

Hi Amy, welcome This is a common mistake made by new comers in SL. Firstly...it will take a few days for LL to process/verify transactions on a new account. Basically they need to establish that the credit source is valid. But, the other issue.....and they DO NOT make this clear on the web site.......is there's two different things going on. Increase credit......buy lindens. You don't need to increase your credit to buy L's. An increase in credit simply add's $$$ to your membership......and also will be used to deduct land tiers if you buy mainland. But....to get lindens all you need to do is purchase them via the exchange. I'm pretty sure there's a cap for about the first 2 weeks....and then after that you can buy until you're broke. LOL The easiest way to buy Ls is to do it in-world. You will see a tiny tiny icon on the upper right part of your toolbar......little button with an 'L'. If you click that....it brings up a window to purchase Lindens. I did exactly the same thing when I first arrived.....immediately increased my credit because I just assumed it would mean I could deduct money for L's. Not the case..... but believe me.....you don't want to dive right into spending tons of money in SL right out of the gate.....it's too easy and shopping becomes addictive!

don't mean to sound like I am whining, although I'm sure most of you already chalked me up as one =P lol
Anyways, thank you all for helping me so quick! I really do appreciate it.
Can anyone tell me if there is validity to my assumption that I am unable to do anything with money in game for 30 days since the error messages all refernce the "monthly limit" status and not the "daily limit" status.
again, thanks so much for your time, it's always refreshing to see a community willing to help new members!

I know what the chart says, but as I recall, I ran up against the same $25 problem you are having. A support ticket fixed me right up, and only took a day or so. Meanwhile, lots of nice people on here, and that's the reason to stay ... not the Lindens or their sometimes goofy rules, or the game. I will be online in about two hours. Drop me an IM and I'll float you until the support ticket comes through.

Viciously,
I really appreciate the offer of help but I'm not going to accept any "monetary gifts" if thats what you were implying, lol =P
I will get in touch with you later though to bug you about many other facets of the game I have trouble with if you are willing to help out!

From: Sindy Tsure /me gives up pointing to the table that says exactly how much newbies can buy based on how long it's been since they first hit up the lindex.. I don't want to be the one to just say a table is wrong ... I'm sort of average enough at the basic mechanics of Second Life to know that it might be me that has things wrong ... BUT ... I remember not being able to spend more than $25 my first month, up until I sent in that support ticket and got it raised. I was even a premium member at the time. I've also heard this same story from a few other people. It may be that we are messing things up ... but if so, quite a few were messing it up the same way.

sindy,
not ignoring you lol =P
it's just the table is what i was staring at forever and it didnt make any sense to me. LOL
I understand the limits and all that and why they are there, I just cant figure out how to apply the error message info to what I am seeing in the table.
Like for instance...it says: Buy L$ - $10.00 Sell L$ - $0.00 Purchase - $25.00
Ok, so I am able to buy 10L$ according to the chart but it wont let me. I can sell 0.00L$ - not even gonna try to see what error it gives me I can purchase $25.00 (whatever that means) which I did...The chart makes no mention that you can ONLY do $25.00 cumulative transactions which includes all "buying", "selling", and "purchases" in a given time frame. If it had, I would have "purchased" less than 25.00 and used the rest of my "transaction allotment" to convert those dollars into L$

From: Pserendipity Daniels At least wait until you have been to Lindal's "Relationships and Cybersex 101" class. See, these are the kinds of assumptions that give Second Life a bad name. Wouldn't want to mess around with me in an air combat sim (unless you have Lindens for a parachute & swim suit) ... but I'm 100% cyber safe, not to mention the only non-bi girl on Second Life.
