One other suggestion Avguste - if you ever decide to explore the seedier places in SL it would be best to do so with a new account, or what we call an "alt". That way Avguste's SL reputation will remain beyond reproach.

One word of caution though, I know a few people here who have done that, and, eventually the alt takes over *grin*

I specifically developed my reputation so it would be hurt if I DIDN'T explore the seedier regions of SL. People expect a degen like myself to do things like that, so nobody is terribly shocked when I do. Works out perfectly.

I don't think they would care much.I will check on it when we come back from break.
And in any case, I still have the CDs people can buy for L$.
I am currently working on figuring the exchange rate and I will post soon some info

Hmmm.

Avguste, about the SL economy...things in world tend to be a whole lot cheaper than they are in Real Life. For example...

Let's say you sell a CD of your music on your website for US $15. Translated into linden dollars, at a nominal exchange rate of 270:1, the same price would be L$ 4,050.

But I think you'll find very few takers at that price. Maybe the fact that they would have to go to your website to download the file would help remind them of "real world" pricing. But I'll bet that most people won't pay more than L$200 - L$400 for music. Something more along the pricing structure of iTunes...

Your competition is streaming internet radio. For L$500, I can buy a little scripted gadget that can tune my parcel media to any of over 1500 channels. Given that, the only reason I'd spend money to buy YOUR music is if I was a fan, and it wasn't available anywhere else.

Live performances: I don't know of anyone that sells tickets. The performers work for tips. Just make sure that you have a tip jar or two prominently displayed.

I would have to agree... the only downside is that I have to keep cleaning my boots every time I visit some of these places.

Thank you for your responses
About live performance,my idea is the following:
-I am scheduled to do a recital this coming april, so I was thinking about having the recital play also live on SL.Would that work?

Yes. People often do that. Just connect your mixing board to the stream software on your computer.

About ticket sales--this doesn't work very well, unless you can find a successful venue in SL that has been doing this and has an established audience. But I have been seeing live shows for over a year in SL and never bought a ticket.

Of course, I DO tip live performers. Get yourself a tip jar and set it out during your performance and you will get a range of tips from many people who attend.

Contact Circe Broom. She owns many live music venues on Laurel Arts Isle. She can give you the live music 101.

I agree, but I HAVE bought MP3 albums from artists I have heard here. I enjoyed the show... and during the performance, they announce that they sell their album online. Give the website and people may pay $14.95 US for it.

If you're looking to make any kind of decent money, Avguste, you are probably not in the right place. The musicians who play live in SL are not making a ton of dough. They do it because they love what they do, they get to practice in front of a live audience, try out new material, etc., but they aren't doing it for the cash. I love live music events, and I always tip the artist, but I just don't see them making a stack of money. Maybe they offset tier if they like to play in SL.

As for pricing, maybe have a website where people can DL individual songs, like on Itunes. Charge 250-275L per song, which is comparable in US$ to what you would pay on iTunes and doesn't seem to be out of line to me. Trying to sell an entire album in SL for 3900L (~$15.00US) is going to be tough.

I'm not discouraging you from doing it. On the contrary, I think you should. It will be a blast, and you'll get some good comments, but Selling tickets is probably not going to work. I also don't know how you would mix a live RL audience with an SL audience and keep track of your performance at the same time.

Good luck, and welcome to SL! Let us know when your concert is. I'd love to attend.

I couldn't help grinning at the thought of requests at a classical recital. "Hey man, can you give us a little of Haydn's Sonata in C# minor, Op. 30, Hoboken 16/36?" Not sure how that would work.

I'm all for more classical music in SL. Count me in. I'd buy tickets, or feed the tip jar. Besides, I need a reason to break out the suit and tie I never wear.

I went to an opera recital in Second Life over the weekend. Brent Renard.

He was actually pretty good. At least to someone that doesn't pay attention to opera.

I found it interesting how many gorgeous well-dressed women were in the audience (along with one wearing a see-through tiny white shirt who had a very conservative looking picture in her profile).

Tipping: Two weekends ago I went to a live performance of an outstanding singer, one of those that other SL musicians go and watch. I think that at the end her tip jar had something like 20,000L in it. Maybe I was seeing things and it was 10,000L, but it was at least 10,000L.

Soji,

How do you find out about the classical/opera performances in SL? I'm always looking for that kind of live music, but never seeming to find it.

Sorry for the deraillment....

Same way I stumble across great performances by Argentineans, Brazilians, Spaniards and the like - everytime I log in I immediately open up search, go to "Live Events", select "Music" (or is it live music?) and do a search. Then I run down everyone performing at that hour. More than likely there will be someone playing at that hour (if it is after work, on the weekend, it is normally a 6 hour wait for someone to start playing). I will then go to that place and listen to the music there. Once there, I reopen my search and continue down the list, looking at everyone listed (and automatically skipping over all that have DJ in the title, and most if not all that do not have the artist name in the event title).

Or, in other words, I just stumble across musicians. I know of others that keep going back to the same musicians over and over again, but I tend to try to find new acts to explore (I've found some great ones that way).

Oh, and for other types of performances, I found out about the live Hamlet play in Second Life (the one that included a Linden as one of the voice actors), through looking through the Flickr group "SL - Theatre" (I think that is the group name).

Ooo.. great suggestion. This goes on my 'Fun Things To Do' list and bumps everything else down a notch. Performances done in another language. Stupid I never thought about it. This'll break me out of my recent rut. Ty, Soji.

Since Avguste has already found the SLMC forum and posted there (which would have been my main advice) with his questions I'll add to the derail :D

Soji seems to find stuff same way as I do, though I do have a few faves, some of whom are also friends of mine, that I will go back to regularly. But I also loooove finding new musicians.

Scroll through the live music listings and hop :D

As for finding classical music, same principle applies, although there is at least one inworld group specifically for classical music. I´m pretty sure it´s in Circe´s profile.

There´s a also lot of `other´ language music out there, including a lot of latin-style music as well. There is at least one latin music group inworld, though the name escapes me at the moment. But those musicians you will also find in the regular live music events listings.

Fun stuff!!

Los Shamanes is one latin music group in world.

Other "other" language musicians:
Jano Runo (from Argentina I believe)
Brent Renard (From Mexico, based in Spain)
Vincent Merricks isn't an "other language" musician but he does do 1 or two songs in an other language on occasion.
Joaquin Gustav (Argentina - great guitar playing)
Pakito Crimson (from Barcelona, Spain)
Ope Beattie (German)
Orangelife Holmer (Portugal)

Duzzy Ryder is from the USA and mostly sings in English, but he is currently based out of Japan and occasionally breaks out his Japanese.

Yea,I found the SLMC forums.

Thanks for the info on the exchange rates.I guessed that the exact exchange rate wouldn't fly much around here, which is why I asked.

Now,while I am getting organized and doing mathematics( LOL ),I am looking for a way to stream my CDs to SL as a free preview/free concert which would have tip jars and the likes.
What location would you advise?Or should I say, what location in SL allows this?
Also,is it true that I can use Itunes to stream the music in SL?
Are locations charging any fees?

The way it works in Second Life is that the Second Life venue itself pays the artist to perform. Most, though presumably not all, venues do not have a cover charge for their guests (I have never seen a cover charge, myself). The music artist gets paid by the venue and through tips from the guests.

I have no idea how streaming works, or anything about itunes. If itunes gives you a url, then you can use that url inside Second Life. That is as far as my knowledge on the subject goes.

:snip:

I meant groups to join to get notices :o

I´ll add Pa Dacosta to the list, he´s portuguese and sings in both portuguese and English, has a band inworld as well. And Shamanes´ lead guy is Horacios Allen who is also sometimes listed by himself.

@ Avguste ... the info about various methods of streaming is on the SLMC forums. There´s also plenty of people there who will be happy to help you set up on a stream and the like.
There are ticketed or cover charge events btw.
However, most live musicians are either paid by the venue or play for tips only. It depends on the venue. Some also use tip-splitting tip jars that split the tips with the venue.
Check the SLMC forums, the info is all there, and they´re a helpful bunch :D
