Where Have All the Griefers Gone?

Well, the griefers are either stuck in summer school this year.. or it's linked to the number of town hall meetings we've had this year.

I still say most of them have realized that they simply can't outdo LL.

I hear all the griefers are going to Blue Mars.

Maybe they have other things to worry about?

You know what I was going to post right before I read your post? *laughs and shakes fist*

They are happily tormenting anyone dumb enough to frequent a (un)Welcome Area or (lack of)Infohub. Since Linden Lab decided to start making these unsupervised hell-holes full islands now - griefers no longer need to wander far from where they set home to help people decide to delete SL from their computers.

There was a large, sudden falloff in griefer attacks around the end of last year, and at about the same time the notorious PN declared "victory" and withdrew from the SL arena. (Since then, one of their former "stars" has come over from the dark side and has been assisting LL and some makers of combat gear useful against griefers.) Attacking SL just became too unrewarding for them, and they have gone on to other exploits. So the semipro psychopaths are gone, and now we mainly seem to have the more ordinary grief-kiddies, and of course individuals carrying on vendettas. Much more manageable.

Looks like for once the good guys sort of won one. : D

Great minds think alike. I was just wondering the same thing. I was thinking I was living a boring life and needed to get out more. But I couldn't even find a decent griefer at the weopons sandbox or the combat zone.

Griefers

Hah! Grief-furs.

I miss the occasional griefing attack.

Being at a club, seeing an "out of place" looking avatar go by, hearing a "bomb" do a countdown & then the Sim disappearing or everyone getting orbited. Or just the standing ones.

Only places I find that random chaos now is in public sandboxes.

We had a targeted griefer attack on one of my islands recently -- the culprit seems to have been someone who was aggrieved because the bdsm club there had thrown him out and who decided to retaliate by crashing the sim several times a day.

Linden Labs were very good about it, perhaps because the wonderful Spike Linden was involved in handling the tickets the club-owner and I both put in. We got an initial response saying it looked as if the crashes were being caused by some sort of rezzer. We then contacted them for help locating the offending item, because we couldn't find anything anywhere near the locations they'd told us to look, and Spike came over. After looking more closely, and spending about an hour checking the crash logs, he was able to determine that the crashes were always immediately preceded by a particular avatar tp-ing to the sim and attaching a hud of some sort.

He asked us if we knew the av in question. We didn't, but the club-owner said, "I wonder if that's an alt of ...". Spike checked and said something to the effect he couldn't tell us anything more but he was passing all relevant details to the G team and he didn't think we'd have any more problems.

I don't know what they did about it, but we banned the av and the guy whose alt we thought it was from the whole estate, and since then it's been nice and peaceful again.

Hal and I were griefed recently by two warring REAL life political factions and it wasnt pleasant. Finally, one group left SL and I persuaded the other group that they were now only griefing the neighbouring properties and ourselves.

I consider many socially "acceptable" behaviours as a form of griefing - people who report on others for inconsequential things that could be dealt with face-to-face, blatant rudeness masquerading as internet or web-acceptable behaviours, vigilanteism, downright ignorant attitudes all are griefing to me.

It's a matter of degrees really. The lunatic who has learned how to type and work on the web to the industrious but mean-streaked neighbourhood oddball are all griefing personalities.

But genuine "attack" griefs - the ones I used to see at places where I lived - and which ended as a gun battle or a freeze-up have gone the way of the dodo. We all take ourselves seriously now. I still expect to "die" at the hands of some griefer or other, just as when I first came on to sl. Hal is perturbed at that fatalistic concept but I enjoy sl more knowing I am as mortal here as anywhere else.

Is resurrecting dead threads griefing?

Dead threads don't wear plaid.

Look up practically ANY event that features a marginalized community. The more emotional value involved the better. After having it happen every time I ran a major event my plans now include 'ok, WHEN we get griefed ...'.

Or highly publicized events, SL5B was griefed.

Every once in awhile one of the mentor groups I am in reports a griefer-wannabe at a welcome area (linden-owned or a community gateway).

A Woman's Centre in SL with which I am associated hosted an anti-war exhibit in February of this year, put together (if I remember correctly) by Code Pink. The Centre is an educational facility, used by a lot of university students, so it is essentially completely "open," with no restrictions on rezzing objects.

The exhibit was griefed by an anonymous alt, who left penises all over the place. Pretty standard stuff, really, and not in itself especially upsetting or disturbing. However, he ALSO left, at the entrance of this exhibit, a very graphic RL image of a woman's corpse.

That particular message seemed pretty clear.

They made puberty and got more interested in porno magazines.
