The point of this thread was just to clear up a case of people mis-quoting something. Not to start a discussion.

Ignore the poll, I knew it would be biased becuase of the type of people that visit the forums. It was actualy just a way to get around the have to ask a question" rule of this forum.

That is all.

I think the point we have to remember is that Linden Lab is free to change their policy on log-ins at any time.

They might continue to treat 'payment info on file' people the same as Premium account people in this respect. Or they might change that policy.

Oh of course. And they have often shown there willingness to change even official policy without notice.

The main problem I have is that people seem to like to quote this specific blog post.. yet change it around and say that LL said premium accounts, not payment info on file.

Lots of people seem to think LL has a plan for only allowing Premium accounts to log in during high load times. And that they just never followed through with it.

http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/02/16/contingency-measures-to-ensure-service-as-second-life-grows/#more-777

This post on the second life blog is where the so called plan was announced waaaayy back.
As you can clearly see, they DO allow Free accounts to log on in this plan, as long as there account is marked "Payment Info Used"

Under this plan a free account as long it has used it's payment info at least once can log on.

----Premium account holders are not so special after all you see.----
LL values free accounts as well. Just becuase you pay for premium does not mean you pay LL any more money then any one given free account! And as you can see in this blog post, LL realizes this.

So, fill out the poll. What category do you fit into?

I would go premium if they switched, but I already spend about $40.00 per month on SL. The only reason I haven't is the only benefit is owning land.

Two tangential mumblings:

The sample in the Forums is likely to be pretty unrepresentative of the general population, so if any general conclusions are to be drawn from the poll results... well, there must be more reliable sources of that information. (On the other hand, if the objective is to demonstrate just how unrepresentative Forums poll-takers are, well... carry on! :p)

Secondly, my guess is that the old policy was announced back when some other bottleneck was the crisis du jour, and since then somebody has observed that it takes a really healthy central database to be in any position to check login attempts for membership or payment status. (Oopsy.)

Free account, I pay LL > 10US$ a month
Free account, I pay LL > 50US$ a month

I'm confused. What do these options mean? How can you be a Free Account, yet pay LL? Do you mean how much you spend inworld?

I think that was a pipe deam, another case of them promising what they can't deliver. They probably aren't capable of differentiating the accounts at login.

I use two accounts. This one is premium and pays LL $100US a month membership/tier, my other is not premium and pays around the same renting a full void for a home.

Should one of my accounts be allowed in and the other not?

They did try it, once, and they got spanked hard enough not to want to try it again.

Interesting, that whole blog entry seems to be missing, where's it hiding? OK, apparently permalinks aren't so permanent, here is where it went.

I was a Premium for over a year, without owning mainland. I realized I was never going to own mainland, so Premium has no use to me so I went Basic. I have no interest in "owning land" of any type, I don't see me becoming Premium ever again. As long as LL allows me to use their service for free I will. I spend about $100 USD a month in world, if that classifies me as a freeloader, Meh.

Just a reminder: Many premium account holders also have a few payment-info and no-payment-info alts.
To answer this poll accurately, i'd have to log in a few times... there may also still be restriction on which payment status is required to post in the forums.

What ever they pick is going to have edge cases of people who pay alot and don't get in. Be it if they cut it off at premium or payment info used. Expesialy with payment info used since it has a habit of not updated when it is used or sometimes disappearing for no good reason. Now if the LL database of payment was reliable then payment info used would be perfect. But it isn't and so you can have sim owners shut out which is just a 'very bad idea'.

Nothing wrong with cuting the load on the DB when load is high and cuting it based on payment. The problem is LL seems to only be able to reliable tell if someone is premium and is to flacky on payment info used so in the end they don't use the things they have put in place. Which leaves us at the same place we where before they declared they 'might' do this except with both sides of the issue even more unsatisfied.

I admit I thought it was Premium not Payment Info on file.

Premium only does not make sense as a real plan obviously due to Concierge Status.

-----------------------------------

Of course if they use Payment info only .. those people in countries who cant actually achieve this status

One of the main stated reasons for NPIOF accounts given in the first place ...

Would therefore be discriminated against.

I am told in several countries its impossible to get this status.

------------------------------------

I think I would support Premium/Concierge priority Logon.

But if that were used Id want there still to be a "line" for everyone else to get in.

If you have concierge service you can use your main to submit a ticket on behalf of an alt. I imagine that is what you would need to do in this situation as well.

How about letting in all accounts held by people (in a high-load situation), and disallowing bots?

As has been hashed out in another thread on this page, LL doesn't seem to have a really reliable way of telling bots from people.

So it would be great if they'd prioritize finding a way to get this info, and then booting the bots when the traffic is high.

And letting the people---Premium and Basic---in.

sadly LL doesn't know which accounts are bots.

Didnt matter enough when they actually could have done something.

Well, right. But if they placed enough importance on finding a way to tell the difference, they could, surely...

Just as good an alternative would be making sure the system had enough capacity to handle 60,000 (and on up) accounts logged in at the same time...
